'Since day 1 the Sigma brand has always been a bit of a money loser for us: they broke more frequently than the other brands. Our techs coined the phrase “Sigma’d” to describe any lens that didn’t function. When they did break, the repair turnaround time was, to be charitable, leisurely. We knew to buy a replacement, it would usually be several weeks and often a couple of months before we got the original copy returned repaired.

In the last year, however, things have gotten much, much worse. One third of the Sigma 150-500 and 120-400 lenses we bought were defective out of the box and had to be exchanged. Several more broke during their first and second rentals. New copies of other Sigma lenses showed up with high defective rates out of the box. Repairs have become even slower and now even our routine in-warranty repairs are being refused and billed as ‘customer damage’, even though we’ve never rented them out, simply tested them.

Several weeks ago we placed warnings on a number of lenses that they were ‘high risk’ of failure. All but two of these were Sigma, despite the fact that Sigma is less than 7% of our lens inventory. When we looked at our actual numbers things were even more bleak: Sigma lenses failed at a rate of 30% per year, compared to less than 5% for Canon, Tamron, Nikon, Tokina, and Zeiss. We weren’t losing a little bit of money anymore, we were losing a fair amount. More importantly, far more importantly, we had customers who rented lenses for important shoots and the lenses failed to work properly. Sigma was about 5% of our rentals but almost one-third of our customer complaints.

We aren’t going to stop renting Sigma entirely but we are going to close out two lines (the 150-500 and 120-400) that have developed so many problems as to be unusable. We will not stock Sigma when there are better alternatives (70-200 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 for example). We will continue to carry those Sigma lenses that are unique and where there aren’t more reliable options (120-300 f2.8 for example), at least for now, but we are not going to offer our “2 in 2” guarantee on Sigma products any longer. The reason is simple: we’re happy to buy a new copy for you to rent, but in the case of Sigma we may have to buy 2 or 3 new copies to get one that passes inspection. There isn’t time to do that in two weeks.

We’ll monitor the situation and hope that someday soon Sigma gets their quality control back to “below average” from its current “worse than imaginable” and we can stock them like the other lenses in our lineup.'

Not impressive.

:D

That sounds like a bit of an exaggeration....were they using CityLink??

i had my 105 macro fail on me,and sigma got it sorted and returned in 3 weeks....is that about right?

Same for me. As long as the fault doesn't reoccur then I'll be happy. I've had a Bigma for a year and it was used for 1000s of shots without any problems at all. Only recently got the 24-70 so am hoping there are no problems with that.

Interesting.

Indeedy - I've had a few Sigma lenses and I've just never been comfortable with them, I haven't actually had one fail on me, but I kept expecting it to happen any day.

Maybe I should just stop reading stuff like this :suspect:

How exactly do lenses "FAIL"?

My thoughts exactly. I have two sigmas that are the lenses I use most and they both seem fine (kiss of death!). My biggest problem with them both though is that people keep posting stuff like this and because of my inexperience and lack of other lenses to compare to, I am permanently wondering if my lenses are crap!

Agreed..
I understand that Lenses will give much better quality.. But why do sigma get such bed press? Mines fine.. touch wood..
But what happens when a lens fails?
If mine fails... I've got another sigma to back it up

Oooops yes.. the 3 week turn around..
Cheers
I'll stick with my Sigmas for now and keep plodding along till I can upgrade.

Don't blame you. That's the only issue I've had with a Sigma and it was dealt with very quickly and efficiently. As I said, I've just bought a 24-70 f2.8 so it hasn't put me off (Mind you, the Sony equivalent was 4 times the price!:D)

My 2 sigmas have been faultless. They have been worked hard and through a lot and never let me down (already touching wood now)
I want to replace one for an upgrade but i have never had a problem and as long as they are sourcedd in the UK Sigma tend not to have a problem sorting their lenses out!

I've had one sigma fail, after a lot of hard work, and two canon L's, pretty much right out of the box.

Didn't know you took them out of the box ,Dod, thought you just sold them again straight away.......:exit:
George.

I really like my 10-20, I've had some great images out of it. And my Bigma 50-500 is just a beast! If it ever fails, I'll keep it as a weapon to beat off any muggers. But the image quality from both my Sigmas are excellent, no complaints at all. Obviously if I was getting paid for my photography then it'd be Nikon all the way but for the meantime, I'm happy with my Sigmas.

God I hate the bigma. I am going to sell mine I think.

f6.5 is a bit pants.

Gary.

I know, I had considered the biggies when I bought the Sigma. I should have waited. I know that when it comes to buying the big boy, I will put cost aside and go for the biggest and baddest (wthin reason!).

Won't be for a wee while, perhaps January. Can stick it to the end of the Tax Bill :D

Gary.

Could it just be an american issue?

ive got 3 sigma(well 2 now as i sold on the one that i dont use) and ive not had any fails, infact my 70-200 is a fantastic lens, very sharp, fast and quiet. the 18-55 is cheap but still works ok

Got 2x Sigmas, including a new 150-500! Hope there isn't a problem with that, but at the end of theday that's what the warranties for I guess.....

I have owned Sigma lenses in various different shapes and sizes, ever since I first took up Photography 10 years ago. I have had NO problems with any of them. Perhaps, I'm lucky - but I would never hesitate over buying another.

Cheers,
James

I've bought 2 sigma lenses before and both of them had to be exchanged on delivery because of serious flaws.
My first 105mm macro had severe front focus and my first 50-500 had an extreme soft focus effect even with manual focus.

I'm very wary of getting another sigma.

I actually love my sigmas. I've had 3 (sold the 70-300 to get the 120-300) and they are my most used lenses. Now I think about it, they are the only lenses I use. My 10-20 for landscape and general photography and my 120-300 for landscape and wildlife. I might stick on the nifty fifty occasionally but that's it.

But, a friend of mine has problems with his 30mm 1.4 after 8 months of owning it. It just started back focusing. Sigma UK wont fix it for free because it's a gray import, so he'll send it back to OSD for a replacement!

The problem with all this bad publicity is that nobody will start a thread with a title "I've had my Sigma for 2 years and it never failed". But those few that do get problems will definitely start a thread in a forum, saying how frustrated they are with Sigma.

With mine, the AF motor went. When I switched the camera on there was a continuous grinding noise, not pleasant! :gag:

ditto marc...sounds like theres a common failing with these lens,well.....if they go wrong anyway.no problems with the 24-70 as yet,but it hasn't been used much either.my brothers wedding next saturday should see it put through it's paces ;)

Surely Sigma must realise that with the amount of "fault fixing" they have to do that there must be a problem with either their quality control or their designs. So unless their mark up on these are such that they can justify the costs of repairs then I don't see how they can maintain such poor standards.

That is because people who have Sigmas that don`t break or don`t need repair or recaliberating don`t make a big song a dance about it on the interweb.........:suspect:

My 35-70 has gone belly up this week!!! I wonder if they'll fix it under warranty?

I bought it in 1996 :)

I bet the are 3 or 4 Sigma users for every "L" lens owner out there, if not more. More lenses (and cheaper construction) means that you expect to see more returns.

Do you pay £250 for your 24-70 from Sigma, or £779 for the Canon. Is it really 3 times better ? That's the question you need to ask. For most non pros the answer is pretty simple.

Steve

:agree:

(sorry for the "I agree" smiley but I couldn't add anything to the above :D)

Ive got 2 sigmas the 10-20 and the 150-500 both i'm very happy with. BUT i just purhased their 70-200 f2.8 EX, recieved on Friday actually and winging its way back to the seller as of midday today. When i tried the lens on Friday the picture quality was very poor, so i tried it out on a focus test chart and they showed that the lens front focussed, so back its gone. Very disappointed to say the least.:shake: I thought EX was a pro quality lens too.
