The23rdman's 52 for 2010- Week 24 - METAL

And on to week 13!

really struggled this week with time as we've been away. I tried VERY hard to get a shot of Bertie, our friends dog, who is so excitable he runs full pelt at you at the sight of a camera and tries to lick it. anyway, I did manage one usable shot, so here's my little quadruped.

That's a really nice image deano!!!
Great dof and great model too !!

He looks to be a bit of a character. Nicely posed and good detail in his coat. Well done on keeping him still for the shoot.

Great shot for Candid, I know how hard it is to get a shot of somebody who has a 6th sense for when a camera is pointing at them.

The lighting for Produce is spot on, as said before wouldn't look out of place in a magazine.

Another Dog .......It's shot with just the right angle from the Sun to make the most of that lovely silky coat.

Lovely shiney coat and expression. I love the eyes, really nice colour and help bring the phot together!

And here's my first take on SHOOT. Shoot can be anything we damn well shoot, right? Well, this might just have to do unless I get another chance this week. Shot at Oulton Church today with Ste Manns.

A lovely image Dean, wonderful colours and light

Thank you, John. It was our first on location strobist shoot and we had a ball.

Looks like another thread that's passed me by - sorry Dean.

Shoot looks very well staged and shot. Like it.

Cheers, Paul. I'm not surprised you missed it, there are so many 52's!

I was having trouble remembering whose I'd commented on. Busy subscribing to those now so I can keep up.

I have a dilemma with this shot! You have a strong back light casting a big shadow of the model on the ground. Also the model, gate and wall are quite well lit, my brain tells me this should not be. Maybe there is to much light on the wall and that's why I think it looks false.
Oh I don't know, perhaps I am just talking rubbish.

Fair points, Allan, but it's not supposed to look natural. When you start playing around with off camera flash you have the world of creativity as your oyster. :)

Great lighting and nice shot - I too would love to find out about your lighting set up as I have just ordered a trigger and receiver from Flash and looking forward to venture in to some strobist stuff.

This one really was simplicity itself. It's simply one 580EX bare on a stand camera left. The sun was so strong we used it as rim through the trees. I'd like to have had an ND filter to allow some of the detail back in the sky. Next time.

Love your quad shot . . . and I sympathise with the dog slobber over the lens problem! Been there done that

Great light in the eyes and a lovely shiny coat. Your persevere paid off
Could maybe do with a bit f a crop off the top to lose some of the wall and the black pot sat on top of the barrel ?

Shoot : Yep I can see this as a totally open theme.
Strobist stuff just terrifies me, never mind doing it outdoors, so I'm massively impressed with this.
The lighting's worked brilliantly. Love the subject matter, love the composition and love the overall feel of it. A big  from me.

Hi Dean, This is the first time I've popped into your 52 - but it most definitely won't be the last! Your strobist stuff in particular, is fascinating. I hardly ever use flash, and have so much to learn, but when I see the creative way you've used light it's a real inspiration.

Picking out a couple of favourites:

Street: This really appeals to me - I think it's the sense of perspective and love pov that make it special.

Present: A lovely image with a philosphy to match.

Mechanical: Just so well set up and executed.

Candid: Totally fits the theme - he wasn't expected that!

And on to Week 14!

Shoot: I like the way you've used strong light both from the right and the left - it gives is a sort of 'other worldly' feel which fits the location.

The lighting and choice of location of this picture is great. I love the shadows over the ground and how the face is still wel lit (without the obvious flash, which it would be in my case ).

Week 10 - chemistry - cracking idea, very neat!
Week 11 - candid - kid looks scared to death, cool, do you have that effect on all kids? lol.
Week 12 - food - great colour to this shot, agree with points mentioned, so I wont ;)
Week 13 - quad - great lighting nice subject, especially the eyes
Week 14 - shoot - well lit, if I had a niggle it would be the fact the front of the face is so bright yet the shadow says the light is behind?

Thank you. I thought about a crop, but decided to keep the barrel in because it has warm memories for me as it homes two goldfish I gave to Peter and Jan when I moved to Leeds.

Thank you, Jean. I'm trying to look at my strobist work as practice for the future. The 52 is giving me that opportunity.

Yes, this has been noted by someone else above. TBH, it wasn't something I thought about at the time. This was our first location shoot so it was just exciting finding this cool old gate.

Week 15 - Single.

This is what happens when you let a single woman walk home alone...

dont understand strobist and flash stuff.. but it looks spot on, nice location and the lighting looks great to me!

single is fab.. what a great take on the theme.. i'm still scratching my head over it here! the lighting is wonderful, again..

Thank you, peeps. Michelle, you can have my first idea for free if you pm me. :)

Superb lighting Dean, and a really well set out image

Some great work here mate. I won't comment on all the individual shots, plenty of other people done that already, but I love the ideas for the last two particular the processing on single. Lovely shot.

Many thanks, John, appreciate that.

Thanks, James. There is actually virtually zero pp on single. The whole effect is from the lighting set-up.

I've no idea how you've done this, Dean, but it's a very dramatic result. The green lighting around the archway give it a really eerie, other-world feel and that shadow -:eek::eek: - it's scary. (Runs off to hide behind sofa ....)

Powerful stuff.

Jean

Thanks, Jean. It was part of a strobist meet this week. We had So much fun. :D

oooh, that must have been a great setup then, I'm even more impressed :D
