The23rdman's 52 for 2010- Week 24 - METAL

That says candid to me Dean
I like your composition and angle of view on this too, but and thats a big but..
come on Dean this theme was only just posted last night and you have your image already  teachers pet:lol:
Kidding aside, I know where you are coming from with this, so many other things can get in the way of our hobby, can't it?
Iain

That made me smile. It's a great shot!

He's got that look of horror just drifting across his face as he realises he's been snapped.

He hates having his photo taken. I was trying to get him all day on his own so was really pleased with this. Plying him with strawberry milkshake flaots helped. :D

Thank mate. :D I've waited for inspiration for every week so far. Still have a couple of ideas I might persue later, but I know we're away next weekend so thought it best to have a fall back.

Chemistry... phew, no odd lighting descriptions this week :D... I like it Dean... a very unusual take. It's a very clean image, clear in what you wanted to convey.

Candid... that's worked very well. Nicely captured... and very candid.

Thanks, john. Yep, very simple lighting for Chemistry and VERY simple natural light for candid.

Love the candid shot - you can almost feel the horror dawning as the shutter is pressed!

Phil

Cheers, Phil, much appreciated.

Like it - and the angle works well too. The expression just says "oh no, that big camera AGAIN!". Well done.

Thanks Dave. :) I'm always asking him to pose for me, but he's his mothers son and refuses.

poor little bu99er!

Definately taken by surprise!

Thanks guys. Roll on next week!

Chemistry - nicely arranged, and I like the way you have caught the texture in the paper. I also like the steely colour tint you have used which feels very appropriate for the subject.

Candid - great expression :D. Well caught!

Thank you.

Great shot, I think it would benefit from being Portrait rather then Landscape....but great opportunist shot

Thanks, Stephen. I respectfully disagree though as I feel the angle and the lines of the fence add to the feel of the shot. :)

When I first read this week's theme, I had this exact shot of the impression in mind and wanted to take a picture of my 13 year old niece as she just hates having her picture taken! You've executed this shot perfectly and the look on your nephew's face is simply priceless! Great candid shot, well done.

Cheers, Jon. Much appreciated.

My nephew, Charley, hates having his photo taken so I grabbed this from the hip. He kinda noticed just as I pointed the camera at him.

He really does hate having his photo taken doesn't he?
That's a look of pure horror on his face, and I almost feel cruel laughing at it.

Normally I hate shots taken at this sort of quirky angle, but this one does work well with the look on his face and it definitely says impromptu and candid to me.
I love the PP on this too - it really works with the shot instead of against it if you know what I mean.

I missed your chemistry shot first time around - probably because you were so quick getting candid posted.
I like this a lot. You must have put loads of effort into drawing that out. The lighting is perfect and the writing just adds that extra bit of meaning to it. Works for me

Thank you, Sarah, you're comments always mean so much. What to do for produce now though!

Nice one Dean. Cracking expression and well composed... Did you crop it much or was it blind luck "from the hip"?

Ian.

Thanks, Ian. It was more from the table than from the hip! Not cropped at all. :)

No crop? In that case...

Ian.

Thanks, Ian. :)

So, here we are onto week 12 already! I had a couple of ideas this week, but have settled on this.
Clickable.

My first attempt at food photography. I learnt I need to think a bit more about my light placement.

Lovely salmon shot, it definitely wouldn't look out of place in a nice cookery catalogue...Personally shot 1 doesn't really have enough of a focal point to keep the interest while shot 2 definitely has!

My tummy is rumbling...

Good week

Dean, I really like the idea of shot 1, having you (I assume it's you anyway ;)) producing in the background is a great idea, I'm gonna agree with Gary though in that the sharp items in the foreground just don't have enough of a hold, not a clue what would improve it though...

So on that basis, the second one, which is excellent gets my vote this week. It's Clear, clean looking, lovely plate of food. I'm not sure on the top left corner, but it's not distracting...

Thanks, guys. I agree totally about the top corner. It's one reason I'm probably going to reshoot it.

Great shot, food looks very inviting, which is the main purpose of photographing a dish like this. I'm feeling hungry allready.

And it's probably just me, but I'm not sure what's in the left top corner?

Thanks, Vicky. Already noted the top left corner. :)

I think this is technically an excellent shot. Nicely lit, sharp and colourful.

I'm not 100% on the composition though. The top of the frame is a little distracting from the left corner (already noted:)) through to the pestle & mortar which has a bit chopped off. I'm thinking either all of it should be there, or none of it.

Really really small points though in a well taken shot. The grub looks delicious!

Ian.

Good points, ta!

looks almost good enough to eat! maybe a napkin and knife n fork would help with the corner or even a glass of wine.

That's an excellent idea! I'll try and do a reshoot this weekend if I get the chance.

That's so close to being perfect . . . and I know that food photography is damn hard, so definitely a  this week.
The food looks delicious, great colours, very sharp and beautifully arranged in the plate.

The couple of things that stop it being perfect for me? (and I really am nitpicking here)

Top and left hand have already been noted a few times, so I won't say any more.

And I think you may already have picked up on this in your self critique, but the lighting isn't QUITE there for me.
The light coming in from the left is just a bit too strong. It's left a bit of a shadow under the right hand edge of the salmon and a reflection on that side of the plate. I think it's also bleached out a bit of the detail in the side of the salmon - I would have liked to see a bit more of the grain in the fish.

As I said that is real nitpicking, but I'd love to see a reshoot with those couple of bits sorted out.

Thanks, Sarah. You're right too. I actually did some adjustment brush work on this to bring the salmon back, but the light is simply coming from the wrong side. I'm planning on shooting it again with a softer light source.

I good shot with strong vibrant colours. As always another brilliant shot
