We had a chance to make a major change to our voting system which may have improved the situation (no panacea) but most didn’t vote and those who did rejected it. Which way did you vote?

It was actually an ironic post about why didnt we come up with the idea of injecting disenfectant... a bit too subtle I guess!

Not at at all, I understood perfectly , I was just making a helpful (?) suggestion. I just feel that we all complain about their uselessness (me too) but we need to do something about it.

Bet you'll be pleased to go back to a bit of normality at least!
I can't wait, although my work enviroment is pretty much isolated anyway.
I just hope everything boots up properly, not just the computers, but all the plant water pumps and ammonia plant. They usually leak if shutdown for a fortnight, I don't think they have ever been shutdown for this long.

Be an interesting first day at least haha

If it had been this week as planned I would have been on late shift and probably missed all the fun. :)
I just hope another letter notifying us of another extension hasn't been sent out as the last one didn't arrive until Monday, the day we were supposed to return.
Not to bad for me if we get sent home again, as t's not even 10 minutes down the road, but some of my mates live about 40 miles away.

You are right, of course, to say the Chinese govt. was wrong (and stupid) not to get a grip on this when it first occurred but their response was no different from U.K. or US govts. (also wrong & stupid) in the context of the different political systems. What I mean is that all three hoped it would just go away, until it was too late (wrong & stupid).

I just can’t see the utility of concentrating on what the Chinese did wrong* and stupidly, we (UK) need to put our own house in order first.

*China does a lot of things wrong. One of the worst in this context is forcing WHO to exclude Taiwan. The rest of the world has been too busy sucking up to China to do anything about that :(. (Wrong & stupid again! :().

Not sure if you meant me or Radio4, Richard..re ' not concentrating on what China did or didn't do. Re. Radio4 . There were 4 programmes covering 2 hours. 8.00-10.00pm. I lost track as one ran into the other. Your comment would be valid if discussions (in general not just last night's programmes or my contribution above )were solely about China but they aren't. The programmes didn't concentrate on China . China was just one of many subjects covered in relation to the situation and contributions came from a variety of experts. Just to clarify that one aspect for myself I had a look at the time-line re China and how they dealt with it re the scientists and posted it. How S.Korea dealt with it was also brought up and as an aside I read that Vietnam dealt with it in short order too. Other countries were also covered.

Every day at the government's briefing journalists get the opportunity to put question to the panel to hold the government to account. As we've seen they don't always get an answer. This forum is full of criticism of our government's handling of the situation. In my post I added my two-pennyworth regarding China but I'd already highlighted the situation with that Liverpool v Atletico game and the Cheltenham Races and criticised HMG for allowing them, amongst other events, to go ahead. When you say that 'we' (theUK )need to put our own house in order first (before criticising China) that's for the government, we can't do anything other than hold the government to account through those briefings, via the media and now Parliament is 'sitting' through that channel too.

So, last night's programmes and my reference to China were just part of a mosaic of contributions to the ongoing debates, discussions and comments. What the world can possibly expect post the epidemic was also discussed. A very interesting 2 hours,I have to say.

I see New Zealnd were on the ball https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-52344299

I think we've had a misunderstanding here..the vagaries of forum talk. If we'd been having a cuppa..lol I'd have mentioned China you'd have said we need to sort ourselves out first,I'd have said, yes of course and when it's all over there will be our own inquiry ( a Leveson-type which has been mooted )and hopefully an international inquiry regarding the way it all started etc. :)

No, John, not aimed at you or R4 in particular, more of a general observation. There are people here and elsewhere (Trump’s crew for example) who are using the errors of China to conceal their own inadequacies!

Well, there we have it. The 2nd in command at the Chinese Charge d'Affaires in London, Chen Wen, has just told Chris Mason, Radio4 World at One news that 4632 is the official number of COVID-19 deaths in China. I mentioned above about a possible an international inquiry into what went on in China but that question was put to the lady and she said "no". So that's that. She sounded like an automaton spewing out the Party line. I really hope that the Huawei 5G issue is pulled. Each company in China, by law, has to assist the government and give it any data it requests. That was put to her as well. No point in repeating her garbage about that issue..re data.

Had a text off a workmate earlier, we are off work for at least another week. They are going to run a 3 weeks on (work) / 3 weeks off (furlough) rota. First lot go back on 4th May. Just got to wait for a letter now to let me know if I am on the 1st or 2nd stint.

Why do we have such an inept government - lockdown, PPE etc... We have Boris and Raab running the show, when the solution is staring us in the face. According to Trump we can just inject disenfectant and it cures it!! Why did Boris not realise this. Useless!!! :)
Just seen a trailer for Ch5 news, they are warning people not to take disinfectant after Trumps claim.

Somewhat OT but on the other hand it’s all connected :(.
“... Trump himself is tens of millions of dollars in debt to China: In 2012, his real estate partner refinanced one of Trump’s most prized New York buildings for almost $1 billion. The debt includes $211 million from the state-owned Bank of China — its first loan of this kind in the U.S. — which matures in the middle of what could be Trump’s second term, financial records show.

Oh bless. Always hilarious to see Brendan O'Neill, part of the strange Spiked Online cult that has made the journey from Marxism to extreme right-wing libertarianism without skipping a beat, fixture on BBC discussion panels and writer for the Guardian, New Statesman, Spectator, Telegraph, and Sun depending on his political pose at the time, banging on about the 'media elites'.

I cringe every time I listen to the man speak:

He’s just another chancer who isn’t above abusing democracy if it suits his purpose.

Just as well someone had the sense to find out the truth then. ;)
Denial from the government doesn’t necessarily mean the truth. I’ve also noticed the DHSC didn’t say the report wasn’t true but rather ‘misleading’. Make of that what you will.

To be honest,Steve..no,I didn't know that. I can't access the FT article without subscribing but I was able to read the Guardian article.I see the 1984 Telecommunications Act forces companies to hand over data. No different to China, then. I'll stop complaining..

Blinded by their political bias, MSM just doesn't care.
They should probably just tell the country that voted the Tories in with a large majority exactly what they want to hear. And best not to draw too much attention to those 20,000 deaths and the decisions that allowed them to happen. That could be upsetting.

Not at all, we need the high entertainment value contributions of a bunch of salty tosspots at a time like this.

not

the UK should start to look at doing the same.
I imagine they are "looking" constantly but I think that their decision should be based on how many fatalities any change will cause or even alleviate.

As the USA and Gerrmany are easing their lockdowns now, the UK should start to look at doing the same. USA is worst in the world for deaths yet they are slowly unlocking.
Surely we do it when it's right for us, not when others start doing it?
Americas death rate per population is approx 1/3 of ours.

I can agree but with our gov lot I wish they would give some idea of when, even when they look at it again in May 7th they should imo give some folk an idea of when they might start to lift it a bit.

I'd hope so.
It looks like we've possibly peaked, so by 7th May they'll know if we have, and may be able to start lifting some restrictions?
The problem is, if they lift some of the restrictions, the covidiots will take that as everything's ok now, and you know what can happen....

That isn't how it should work. There are many questions that need to be answered. Just a few of the obvious ones are...
  • How many vectors are still in the population?
  • How confident are they that the new tests will reveal all the vectors?
  • What proportion of those vectors are "silent", so that they don't bother to get tested?
  • Are the resources for treatment now adequate to cope with a new outbreak?
  • Will sufficient resources be available to cope with an extended outbreak?
It isn't at all simple, even if you take the view that a certain number of mortalities are "acceptable".

I do agree we have to be careful when they start to lift the lockdown, as with BJ having getting over it I do think he is scared and don`t blame him at all either. Even if they could say...OK we might start with letting this lot back and go from there.

Agreed, what a waste it would be if the lockdown was relaxed too soon and the virus re-surged. "For the want of a nail a shoe got lost."

The published country by country statistics are not not easily comparable. There is no uniform method of collating the data. Countries that do large scale testing will uncover large numbers of people who are infected, but have mild or zero symptoms. These cases rarely become fatal or seriously ill, but get recorded as infections. Other countries that do not test large numbers will basically only count infected people who have had a medical diagnosis.
