Are the NHS workers wearing masks doing it for their protection or the patient?

I ask because my understanding is that ,for the public, the official line is that they're ineffective and not advised ?

For our protection but by default for the patients as we are always caring for more than one person. ie nhs workers wearing correct equipment protects them which in turn stops us going to the next person and giving it to them if you see what I mean.

But yes, people wearing masks in public is completely inneffective 99.9% of the time. I would say the only possible caveat to that would be
1. If someone had it without knowing the would cough in the mask, this will stop it being coughed into the immediate vicinity and raising the risk to others nearby and onto surfaces.
2. If you are wearing one and someone coughs (without a mask) at you then virus landing on your mask will have given you some protection. However, simple surgical masks, once wet / damp (from your own respiration) will be useless as the virus tracks right through the mask :-/

That's correct, Matt but it only applies to the rest of us. You have to understand that it's vital they have heirs to keep the considerable wealth and privilege they enjoy on track. :)

Here's a list of the properties (landed wealth) they own https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_royal_residences
Windsor

A friend once asked me if I'd rather have a Tony Blair as Head of State. My answer was yes because if we don't want him to continue we have the option every 4/5 years to vote him out. That option doesn't exist with Royaly.

Cornwall. Has an £800million Estate yielding £19million a year private profit. A feudal law still exists that the assets of anyone in Cornwall who dies without leaving a will goes to Charles. Since 2006 he's pocketed £1million of the £3million cash pile. So..you folks in Cornwall..if you haven't already done so make a will..lol By the way..he owns most of the Scilly Isles, including a third of all buildings..since ...er..the 14th Century. He's just increased the rents for tenants on his freehold land. Allegedly for one tenant from £100 to £7000. It's not gone down too well.

Sorry about that, Matt..:) . Back to the virus..Lol.
Makes the virus seem like good news.

My billionaire neighbour was flying around in his helicopter over his "second home" yesterday. Personally I would call that an unnecessary journey :naughty:

You have a billionaire neighbour ? Are you just a millionaire, then..

FWIW I’ve always found difficult photographing while dog walking, maybe because I’ve only had dogs that need keeping an eye on at all times. So I think it depends on the dog :).

Tell me about it..Lol. We've had two retrievers and they are not the sort of dog you want with you when trying to photograph birds or anything else.

Money saving expert have mentioned the same thing, but they have also said that if your vehicles MOT is due before March 30th and it fails, you aren't allowed to continue using it.

f*** sake, mine was due 12th April so had it booked in today, queue £200 bill for brakes being worn....had I left it a week I would never have known ;) ...still better safe than sorry I guess...

Just seen on Autoexpress - Cars due MOT before 30th March you need to get it done before, If your car is due after theres going to be an automatic 6 month extension.

One caveat to the post - Id expect autoexpress to be accurate but Ive also checked the gov.uk site and as of this time on 25th March cannot see any mention of this for domestic vehicles but have little reason to doubt it to be coming.

What is the situation with vehicle insurance if the Insurance company is shut down at the time insurance is due for renewal.

I see that a work colleague had posted a rant on Facebook earlier, saying our employer is playing with peoples lives by not having laid us off.
Last week all office staff, managers and most of the engineers were told to work from home, thus reducing the daily workforce from around 3500 down to less than 300. We don't all work in one place, we are distributed over 5 seperate buildings, and various different seperate departments within those buildings, further more most either work 2 shift, some are on 3 shift, so in our department, where the two of us work there are around 20 of us, most of us are in dyno cells, there are around 60 dyno cells, alot of them are shut so we are fairly well spread out, so very easy not to have see anyone, or talk to anyone for the whole shift if you want to, plus we have cleaning sprays and loads of nitrite gloves to wear. Plus cleaners go round 2 or 3 times a day.
I really can't work out where he thinks any danger of infection is likely to come from.
So he reckons he won't be at work until after our Easter Shutdown. Mind you he does like to take a lot of time off "sick" . I'm not sure if he has ever actually been off when legitimately sick.

Before I went I googled Corby coronovirus on the net and we are (ATM) zero infections and zero deaths.
You'd probably draw a blank on most towns at the moment, but that's just because data below the 'upper tier local authority' / NHS region level isn't being published and there's hardly any community testing. In Northamptonshire there are currently 37 confirmed cases:

https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/f94c3c90da5b4e9f9a0b19484dd4bb14

But most or all of these will be hospitalised patients. There must now be (at least) hundreds of cases in your county, most not serious enough to go to hospital and be tested, but just as infectious, and equally dangerous to those in high risk groups who might come into conact with them. People with no symptoms at all, or in the incubation stage, can also be infectious.

No idea, I guess you find an insurance co that is open? Nothing to do with the mots really unless im missing something?

Oh no, don't assume most are hospitalised, only severe ones are, I know of a few locally that were assessed at hospital and due to being mild symptoms were told to go home and self isolate.

Could have saved you a very nasty accident.

Why extra risk? If mine was due it would have been done at the dealers along with the service. The technicians wear gloves, they place covers on the seats, steering wheel , gear knob and handbrake, plus the locking wheel nut socket and key/remote fob are wiped down with sanitizer on handover. Very little risk I would say.

Unlike you I won't get 80% of my income from the heavens. I need every single non-essential bill eliminated. Sorry if this puts FORD dealership in a harder position. They get all the bailouts they could dream of.

Help for self employed being announced shortly.
No doubt it will be crap.

I don't think a Ford dealership would be too concerned with not having your £60.
What makes you think I will get 80% of my income?

I just hope it will be a better kind of crap than it already is... I read you can't even get through to job centre as they are so understaffed to handle 5mln phone calls in a day.

There's always going to be a risk, in any shared workspace, and on the public transport that some workers might use to get there. You can reduce, but not eliminate, this with distancing, sprays and gloves etc.

I see no reason why it should if done properly. The way I see UBI working is that it replaces all tax allowances for individuals and all benefits.

As a very simplistic example: suppose every adult receives £200 per week in return for paying 30% income tax on everything they receive (probably higher rates for income above £10,000). That UBI becomes the only subsidy anyone receives: no child allowances, no state pension, just a single payment to keep you alive and pay a basic rent.. If you want more you work for it.

Of course the actual amounts would need to be calculated but £10,000 a year seems a do-able figure in return for clearing away all the tax dodges and excuses. It gets rid of the National Insurance which has never been quite what it claims to be and it will encourage more people into employment because they know exactly what they'll get to take home (say 70% of their wages).

Of course it won't suit a lot of people who see tax as a voluntary contribution and society as something they just ignore when they wish to. For most people, though, it could be just what they need to motivate them.
It’s reported hundred of thousands of new applications for Universal Credit are in the pipeline. I suspect there will be great delays, more efficient to introduce UBI?

Unless you are agency worker you will either have 80 or 100%. Everyone on PAYE does.

P.S. Ford were never in the running for my 60 as the car is a different brand, and serviced independently. Maybe they will get lucky next time, i.e. if they bring out a nice F-150 here, but this is now irrlevant.

But were they tested? According to the guidelines for clinicians, testing is only mandated for those who meet the 'inpatient definition':

https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...s-of-wuhan-novel-coronavirus-wn-cov-infection

If they weren't tested, then (like other patients advised to self isolate over the phone) they won't add to the confirmed case count.

There is no public transport to where we work, we all drive, with the odd few on bicycles or motorbikes.

"The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire, where they met the criteria required for testing.

Lol.. I wish. I am a mere local yokel... haven't quite got round to doffing my cap yet though ;)
If that’s your usual headgear in your avatar, it’s not really suitable for doffing, I’m speaking as a practising doffer — not to royalty etc, only to peers (in the proper use of that word :)).

What? Don't you think he should've caught it?
It was bound to happen if it's an heir-borne virus!

Charlie Bloggs from Croydon, presenting with mild symptoms, would have been sent home to his shared one bedroom flat untested, though. Community testing, it seems, is only indicated for celebrities, not suspected cases and their contacts, or NHS staff. As is moving to your second home.

I would imagine at least part of the criteria will be the protection of the Queen.
That's not a clinical criterion, though. Many people have parents or other relatives in high risk groups, but aren't being offered tests in the UK. I'm glad he's been tested, but are we really incapable of providing the test to anyone in this situation, as South Korea does?
