Well that's a mature response ...

Everybody else is having a sensible, balanced discussion about it. Nice but rare.
Your sensibilities on what its politicaly correct to call it isn't really the issue. I'm taking the star back. Go sit in the corner. Talk to yourself.

Shutting down public transport seems logical but I know folks who couldn't get to chemo treatment without it. A bit difficult to restrict its use I would imagine.
Its only peoples willingness to comply that makes these things work.

You raise a very important point.

A blanket transport ban could be dangerous for some folk.

There will need to be a system of alternate transport of 'hospital taxis' established.

Well (unsurprisingly) you've totally ignored my actual point about the competence of the leader of the free world.

Being careless about ones language and it's possible consequences isn't a matter of 'political correctness' it's crass stupidity.

Ebola?

The number of people dying from coronavirus in Italy has risen by 475 in one day to nearly 3,000 - the biggest increase since the outbreak.
There are a total of 35,713 confirmed cases in the country, with more than 4,000 having successfully recovered.

Italian authorities have pressed charges against more than 40,000 people for violating the lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus, according to figures from the interior ministry.

While millions of Italians have been staying at home since 9 March, when the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, imposed a national quarantine, a minority of the population have violated rules requiring citizens to venture out only if strictly necessary, such as for work, health-related reasons or grocery shopping.

I remember seeing BBCTV program maybe 10 or more years ago about African “pygmies” (as they used to be called), the Baka, I think. They caught bats trussed them, wrapped in leaves and toasted them (alive, well, not fo long) over the fire :(. Probably very tasty :) but not for me :(.

B****y ’ell..:(. Sounds horribly cruel too.

The army presence isn’t new. When I went to Rome in October there were army posts at every tourist attraction.
I've seen the Army there too, at the tourist attractions as you say, but not in a square. And looking at the webcams, the Police seem to be driving around as two cars together sometimes.

Yes, if you or I did it, but it’s a different world view for, say, hunter gatherers like these are. So it’s painful from the bats point of view (do they have one?) but cruel from the Baka’ view — IMNVHO of course :). People say cats are cruel for ’playing’ with mice before killing them but I don’t think they are — cat ‘owners’ on other hand ... :).

I see visitors in Spain have just a few days to get back. All hotels are closing on Tuesday.

Just looking at a webcam in Rome, and one Police car left a square, and another came in from a different direction. And there is a soldier stationed in the square. :$ If they go this far in the UK, then there won't be enough Police to enforce anything.

I'm sure we have more than 2 police cars and 1 soldier in the UK? ;)

Already a hospital transport scheme available.

I asked the Mods to lock me out of the Hot Topics ages ago, PLEASE folks keep it nice in here for me as I like to comment (y)

Indeed, my New Year resolution was to stay out of here but.....

And 2978 dead. That is a 1 in 12 fatality rate. That is a very alarming figure suggestive is of being out of control. Poor blighters - how dreadful for everyone.

I’m also noticing a definite flagging of spirits of my Spanish friends. They are finding it hard. Apparently tonight’s 8pm applauding was noticeable more muted than on previous nights.

Italy 35, 713 cases with 2978 dead
Germany 12,327 cases with 28 dead

Therefore Italy has nearly 3 times more cases than Germany, but 106 times more dead.
How on earth has that come about ?
In both countries the infections started nearly on the same date.

I am not surprised. It must be utterly soul destroying. People will feel helpless.

I tried to work that out, but gave up.

Germany seem to be doing a pretty good job of keeping the fatalities down, hope that doesn't change.

The hospital transport scheme (in Rotherham & Sheffield) is grossly inadequate.
A patient we met at a recent Macmillan meeting was asking how she would get from Rotherham to Western park, Sheffield every day for 3 weeks for her radiotherapy. She was advised public transport or taxis as she probably wouldnt get scheme transport.
Shes 72 and her husband is blind.
If it ties in with my wifes treatment we will pick her up.

Because of my wifes condition and operation tomorrow weve been isolating for the last 10 days, to ensure she didn't get an infection that would stop her op.

We're lucky, big house, massive garden, full sky netflix etc . Just 10 days has driven us mad.
I can understand peoples spirits taking a hit.

Yes, pre covid19 epidemic that would be right enough if she can afford it etc, but under current circumstances and if her appts are not deemed as non urgent and there is no public transport or taxis then Id imagine hospitals will look at how they can help support her.

A stat to bring things into perspective. Since January 9th (the date of the first Coronavirus death), nearly 9,000 people have died from Coronavirus.
In the same period , over 60,000 people have died from TB - in Globally around 250,000 have died from TB In the same period.

If only there were a vaccine...

There is no perspective in this whatsoever, comparing different diseases especially when ones got a vaccine and another doesnt and the reasons behind a lack of vaccine uptake etc having many factors ranging from education, cost and social factors etc etc.........

Thanks for that.
Really cheered me up, even though what you typed doesn't make sense....

Richard..what on Earth is IMNVHO..?... Ok..got it..lol. I would never describe any opinion of yours as humble even less so ‘very humble’ :)

It’s really having a discussion involving semantics. My thoughts are that it’s cruel to do that to an animal whoever does it.The action of cruelty is an absolute. It either is or it isn’t. Cultural considerations don’t change that. The Aztecs and Incas sacrificed children, infact their families saw it as an honour that their son or daughter was selected.. It was barbaric in the extreme and the fact that they didn’t think so doesn’t change that. Too many really bad things are done in the name of tradition and culture. There’s one good example not involving animals but one person on another and that’s FGM.

I doubt bats have a point of view ..lol..but if they did I’m sure they wouldn’t think being treated like that was acceptable btw. Did you mean ‘not cruel’. Re Bakas ?

Cats. My thinking is the same. It’s actions with a mouse conforms with our perception of what constitutes cruelty. The fact that the cat doesn’t hold such considerations is neither here nor there. Seems it’s part of it’s hunting technique. I rest my case.. :)

Yes, I am not in a position to say for sure, but I suspect the quality of German health care will be a big factor in patient survival.

Mental Health as it will feel like your in a prison and not being allowed to go out.
I go stir crazy after a few days of the flu!
And what about those Claustrophobic people?

Plus another thing to think about if the whole country goes to lock down is, Mental Health as it will feel like your in a prison and not being allowed to go out.

One could see it as an opportunity to do things for which time is not normally available.

My mother (aged 87) has a friend in her 90s. The friend has long been housebound, seeing carers a couple of times a day while living in her own home, but otherwise had few visitors. Last year she was moved into a nursing home where she is now terribly lonely, never sees or speaks to anyone, yet is fed several times a day, has cleaners around and can spend time in common areas.

The prison for many is the one inside their head. Yes, it's unpleasant to be constrained against your will if you're an active person, but if all people do is come home & watch the box then it's not really worse than normal.

I wonder how many divorces will cite this period as the time when things went pear-shaped?

I know it was a joke, but I hope your right. Spoke to a Policeman a year or two ago, and he said there were only half a dozen motorcycle Police to cover the whole of Merseyside, and they have to ask other counties for use of their motorcycle Police for large events. :$ There's been cuts since then, and only funding promised to improve their numbers since the Election, and even if you believe they would keep election promises, will not have had time to increase their numbers in any meaningful way.

I've just found out that my work may be closing down from Friday till .......

I have been trying to explain to my Mum that I will soon have to stop coming over to help, and she says OH that`s silly you can`t stay in for 12 weeks and it`s a shame she can`t understand what`s happening.

I did read some where that they say the divorce rate could go right up.
