Very interesting shots here. I like cars, so I think I am going to give it a try as well. But before I start anything, here the question:

I probably will use my 5D3 + either the 24-105L or a 17-40L. As I understand it will be hold by a pole which is attached to the car by suction cups. Now, that combo will weight about 1.6kg on a pole which is lets say 3.5m. Is there a chance that the suction cups damaging the car?

Suction cups won't damage the car unless the metal/glass is incredibly thin, be careful with cars designed to be as light as possible, but with that weight try and get the suction cups as far apart as possible. You'll be needing the 17mm.

Well I was thinking of using a Porsche 911 Turbo.

Best way is to use ND filters. I have 3, ND2 ND4 and ND8 and they can be stacked. On a bright day I can use ND8 but usually use the ND4. Could you not have had a longer exposure and reduced the exposure whilst editing the RAW?

Nice shot by the way :) just needs longer like you say, for the wheel rotation.

thanks mate.. will do just that.

Could alao be worth checking out the screw-in variable nd filters, they're great for video work, no reason they wouldn't work for photography too?

Hi this is my first post here and I have read through most of this thread, some great advice and photos.

However I have a question as I'm new to photography. I bought a Fuji S9600 to learn with a few weeks ago but will it be good enough to get decent shots with.

If not then what camera would be best either new or used for around £500

Thanks in advance.

if you have full manual control on the fuji and shoots wide angle so as a camera it should be fine. with rig shots though, the cost is in all the other bits of equipment you need - suction cups, booms, clamps, remote triggers, filters etc...

Yes it does have full control and I have ordered a wide angle lens.

As for the kit I was going to make my own.

Should be okay then, just use it on shutter priority or manual and the wide angled lens will help a lot with your boom length.

I did the same and made my own rig while I save up for some carbon fibre :)

I'm copying what you did and will work up from there.

Just gave it my first try. Remote didnt turn up in time and the girlfriend wouldnt push so drove it on quite a bumpy road but all in all i was quite happy and learnt alot.

Next time I want to try get the rig more stable and spend more time in PP only took a few mins when I think it needs alot longer to get it right. Any tips welcome :)

Thanks. I am using the normal manfrotto cups and clamps with just my ball head bolted to the end of the pole. Going to purchase magic arm tomorrow but wanted to try it first. Pole is 50mm Ali 2x 1.75m and then a 40mm steel joiner which is just over a meter.

looks pretty sharp but something weird going on with the tyres where they contact with the road

here are some of my shots let me know the good the bad and the ugly :)

just changing a few things to the rig as we speak.
also some thing i have not seen used on here are the suction cups i use. i use x 2 Delkin Fat Gecko Camera Mount modified a little with a exhaust clamp on top of each to connect to the pole they work great as you can anlge the cups to suit the shape of the cars body

the pics dont look that sharp when i up load them so u can see them on here

was the scooter photoshopped in after shot? as its not going the same direction as the car. and there is a halo around him.

I like the second one, and shame about the drivers face blur in the third one.

Ive not seen those cups before, but they dont look sturdy to me, what pole set up are you using?

yeh see what you mean opps , i took 2 photos and tried to put them together and ran out of skill :)

As for the set up its just a very long aluminium pole and i have another that slides inside. i will try and get a photo of them on the car to show you. the cups are definitely better than the other b and q suction ones i have seen on here as that's what i started with and i found them to be pants and evan some times coming unstuck

how would i get his face in foucs ? the way i was thinking 2 photos one with the car moving and one with a still and put the photos together in photoshop , or is there a better way ?

nice, the RS one fills too much of the photo and is too distorted for my taste, the BMW ones are good.

What mag is that?

Nice to see a blue RS, im getting tired of shooting white ones lol

It's pbmw mag and I was a bit limited with length due to my suction cups not being able to clear the spoiler
