The Ultimate Car Rig Photography Thread!

Been following this for a bit and have now got all the parts together, hopefully get it built this weekend and give it a try. Although I don't think I will be sticking it to my car.
 
Got the clamps 50% cheaper than new, saving of £30, soon stacks up really.

Just need to wait for my attachment plate to arrive as the Magic Arm didn't come with one, and then sort out the pole.

£150?!?!? Was going to ask a welder friend to make me one up, shouldn't take more than 30mins and a few bits of metal.
 
Yeah was gonna say I had a mate make me one. Was a simple job and didn't take him long at all.

Can you not ask on facebook etc if anyone has access to a welder? I wouldn't be paying £150 tbh!

I have and found a few that do welding but not alloy unfortunately. Don't really want to be paying £150 and so will keep searching!
 
aye, if you can get a steel slip over then a steel box section can be used for the upright of the tensioner, pretty much any welder then should be able to sort that and again should only be 10 mins work.
 
finally got v1 of the rig up and running today!!

really need to try it pushing the car on a smooth road.. instead of driving in a field :)

That pole looks immense, what is it and hows it anchored to the upper suction cup? I'm guessing the lower suction cup and upright are just there to keep the elevation and reduce sway.

I have a magic arm that could do with a play :D
 
I posted a thread in Talk Equipment but it might be better to post here:

I'm looking to setup a car rig to play with and looking at the suction mounts I seem to have an option of Manfrotto 241 or F1000 which seem very similar in function but the first has a female socket and the later a male.

Are there any advantages / disadvantages of either?

Love those shots - great sense of movement and that's some extension on the lower suction cup!
 
I finally had most of the equipment to do a test rig shot today (haven't got the suction cups yet) so I took my gear into work this morning.

Set it up on my work van as I can clamp directly onto the back and soon realised that my pole was never going to support the magic arm with 5d and 16-35mm along with a fairly heavy Manfrotto 3 way head. So I have to reduce the length of the pole until I was confident it wouldn't snap!

Then I realised at the early hour I was up to head to work I picked up my 5d classic not the MkII and it had next to no battery left!!!

So I managed to get 2 shots before the battery died and this is the best of the 2!

So I need a new (stronger) pole as well as some form of tensioner and some more battery next time I have a play!

Have you not used a magic arm? They're pretty light and very flexible.

Test shot looks good though!
 
Yeah I'm using a Manfrotto magic arm for this shot.

I think my pole is the problem, I need a stronger aerial type pole??
 
Here's my rig, I actually haven't used it in it's current 6M length. Might try and have a go when I get a chance.

How's it feel at 6m? That's the length I've made but haven't got the connectors to put it all together at the moment.
 
To be honest I haven't even used it. I had to flog my lenses, so had nothing wide enough to use.. got a wee 24mm so might have a go with it..

Mine is made with 1&1/4 aerial mast, then sleeved with 1&3/8 exhaust pipe, bolted together with M8 bolt's with butterfly bolts on one side for removal.

I'd image 24mm should be more than enough at 6m! At 2.5m I was using a 10mm on crop sensor. One reason I've also gone for a 6m pole is to get some really good glass on the camera rather than just UWA on a crop.
