THE PP GAME!

Quick one from me....

Lightzone
Quick touch of shadows / highlight and detail with relight tool
NR on green BG
convert to jpg (not going to be doing much else to it)

PS
Duplicate layer, flip horizontal
align dogs left ear over right ear
layer mask and paint out all but ear (to remove black shadow behind dogs right ear)
Add extra canvas left and right
Clone extra green either side (not sure I needed to or not now but was undecided on crop)
Rotate to give dog a "questioning" look
Crop
Select face, duplicate, tidy with layer mask
then NR / blurring on background
Clone bright spot from eye

Removed the blue thing and the BG on left.
Converted to Monochrome, or B/W to you and me.
Gave a bit more contrast to the nose.
Reduced noise.
Sharpened by 53% radius 5 threshold 2.
At last moment decided to give the canvas a bit more on the left so the doggy wasn't dead center.
Reduced size and save for Flickr.

Well time is up people, time for some judging

Rhodese

from that write up seems like you really did put in a lot of effort and it shows. i like the way you have removed the black dog on the left and the blue bowl at the top with the dreamy sort of effect. i really like the image especially its something i would not do or think to do.

Dr ozone

a image very much like mine shame you just missed the crop at the top  lol. Also the cloning on the left is just keeps grabbing my eye but it was difficult due to the shallow dof (as you can see mine is much worse:eek:) shame you didn't try the eyes i would have love to have seen that think it could have ended up quite well

Graham
i will start by saying very well done on the removal of the black dog on the left a seemless edit in my opinion. i think the crop is too tight for my liking but it still works and is growing on me, the blurring of the background is a nice touch which i think really draws my eye right to his big nose, and the little tilt on his head is very much terrier and looks good

Jim
i think the mono conversion looks very good and like the way you have done it. the cloning on the left draws my eye but as i have said before it was a very awkward picture to edit and clone and i think the clarity needs to come down a bit but that is just my personal opinion i think it makes him look more greasy that what he really is (even though he does need a bath :puke:)

time for my image:

then in photoshop for some (poor) cloning and thats all

the winner has to be Graham for a nice head shot and great removal of the black dog

over to you overbez

Cheers Nicholas, didn;t realise it was a dog next to him - thought it was just a black object that had to go!

I'm away for easter from thursday afternoon so going to have to be a quickie please...... Evening sun shining pretty much straight at him, ISO 3200 from doing some action shots with his brother and turned to get some spontaneous ones here.

JUDGING 4PM THURSDAY...... yep 46 hours from now! (Or else it would be Tuesday next week!).

Developed in NX2 . Lightened left eye. Darkened right ear. Tweaked White balance. Cropped and sharpened for Web

Here is my go...............

think i must have played with every button but i seem to do that just because i love buttons :D the main things really is that i gave it a little crop with a slight rotation and also upped the exposer and highlights on his arms to match the face more. and as i have said before played with most buttons but as a picture is like a thousand words i have a screen grab

and the picture

Well done Graham:banana:Thanks for the f/b and critique Nicholas, I didnt realise it was a dog on the left either, shows how observant I am:)

Well done Graham and thank you Nicholas for your comments.

OK then,

Open in ACR, auto plus a little sharpening and noise reduction, open in PS.
Open a second copy in ACR, no adjustment, open in PS.

Drag the untouched copy on top of the rendered version.
Add a mask to this layer.

With a soft round brush set to black, utilising different opacities, brush sizes and settings, paint over the boy to reveal various amounts of the corrected image below. Leaving the background as is. Correct any mistakes by changing the brush colour to white by hitting the X key.
SAVE.

Flatten.

Create a new layer, fill with 50% grey and change the blend mode to soft light.
With a very small soft round brush at 8% paint white (dodge) into the whites of the eyes and on the teeth, building up the effect gradually.
Now at a very low opacity and a larger brush (The brush size is changed using the square bracket keys.) soften the shadow under the lip and eyes.

Change to black (Burn) and with a very small brush paint the eye lines in.
Now change the paintbrush foreground colour to that of the darkest pink of the lips.
With the opacity at 8% paint on the top and bottom lips to enhance.
Still with the pink brush but with a much larger brush at 10% click once on the pink in the cheeks.

Change the foreground to the green of the eyes, with the paintbrush at 2% build up the eye colour.

Flatten.

Switching to the clone tool at 50% opacity an 10% flow reduce the dark edges/ends to the smile.

Lastly but not least, remove the dew from the nose.

Make a slight crop.

Select all, make and add the border using stroke.

SAVE
Save for web.

Come on only an hour to go,........ go on you know you want to.

Thankyou chaps for responding to my rapid-fire round!

Now I found this a tricky one due to the sun shining directly on him, and the inevitable noise from the high ISO.... Anyone with kids will know there is always a reflected highlight under the nose, which has to go!

So... @Beagletorque , andrew. Nice edit, welcome in BTW.. Like this a lot, didn't really notice the bright ear too much till you mentioned it... got the snot and I like the crop and the lightness to the background. Bit more detail on methods would be useful, as well as a slightly larger image if poss, Noise is my fault, but isn't too intrusive here. Did you do any NR after ViewNX2, as it doesn't have a NR feature?

@nicholi , nice bright edit - lifted the BG nicely, missed the nose highlight. ;) Lifting the BG has brought some noise in - again my fault there! Lifting the exposure on the arms to bring them out of the shadow was a good idea and nicely done.

and @Rhodese, lovely edit - really brought the face to life and given his eyes a real sparkle. Background feels a tad dark for me, although the boy is spot on. I appreciate the effort on the face too, little touches make a difference!

b****r - always tough to call, and less entries doesn't make it any easier!

I think for the crop, (wasn't sure about straightening him), the lightness of the BG, and the evenness of the skin-tones, I pass the baton to andrew @Beagletorque .

Which places you front and centre, and if you can post up a RAW and give a deadline.... the magic will unfold before you!

Thankyou, and well done . (y)

oh - heres mine (FWIW) cant get the small size working so click for the big

mostly from this in ViewNX2, plus a bit more fiddling, still not happy with it though.

Thanks Graham. The NX2 was Capture not View. This allows specific areas of the Raw to be changed individually.
I will not have a chance to post up a RAW before Easter so I'm happy to pass my prize over to Nicholas so the guys have something to play with during the hols.
Regards,
Andrew

thank you for the C&C overbez and yes totally missed the nose highlight  :$. congratulations beagletorque (y). i can post a new one up or wait depends what everyone else wants?????????

Oh yeah! This has got plenty of potential, I can almost smell the dragons coming out of the tunnel and, and ..... oh sorry, that's the other thread:)
Well done Nicholas, looking forward to the challenge. No silly stuff, I promise (where's the fingers crossed smilie?)

Been fairly busy recently and clearly a bit lax as managed to miss 2 rounds now- doh. On the case here- see lots of potential- for sensible edits of course:naughty:

Just a quickie from me.

Remove distracting trees and such.
Add B&W adjustment layer, up the reds and yellows.
New layer, fill with 50% grey. Dodge and burn with black and white.

And a Happy Easter to you too Jim.
No good looking for Homer then.

Ok

In LR:
Sharpened
Increased Hue on green
Increased contrast and clarity slightly

In PS:
Added new layer
Sampled colour of text
Tried various lettering- used Lucida Sans Unicode in the end. A little slimmer than I would have liked but hey ho.
Free transformed for best fit.
Added new layer
Sampled 'black' marks on sign
Using textured brush covered over H

Entrance Issues:
Struggled here- tried for various effects, none of which seem to come off
Added variety of layers and tried oranges, yellows, reds, whites
Then reverted to blackening parts
Would have liked to add some fiery menace but too technical for me just now.
Blackening works best for me

As always last one is the entry

Due to work I will have to call it at 2000 hrs sorry but at least we might have a few stragglers left the join in

still a bit late but that seems to me in a nutshell :D well lets get down to the C&C

Rhodese

i like the dark, grungy sort of look. i like the way you have removed the trees away from view which attracts my eye more towards the sign. only negative i would have would be it just seems a little bit flat for my liking maybe a bump up in the contrast but thats just me and i love my sliders :D

Farmerjim

the sign is a very nice touch and made me laugh :). maybe not as "grown up" as the other people but i still like it (only because it was easter). mouth of the tunnel seems to have a lot of noise and seems very out of place and thank you for not adding a cartoon character.

Dr_O

everyone seems to be adding the hell/dungeon sort of look, but i like the glow from the flames of hell :nailbiting:. nice try on the letter H but just seems to be a-bit out of place and keeps drawing my eye to it.

Paulbutler

not a big fan of square crops and colour of the photo seems to be lacking and dull but very much like the darker entrance to the well. sorry to be a bit negative but we all have different views on photographs :snaphappy:

i desaturated the colours then made the orange and red stand out a bit more not a picture i like but i thought i would give you guys something different

and the winner......................................................................................................................................................................

will have to be Farmerjim just because its easter and made me laugh. but only because it is easter though

Thanks Nicholas- I would have preferred a meatier 'H':D

Well done Jim:clap:- what font did you use? Yours looks much better

Thanks Nicholas. What honour has fallen on me:)
I didn't use a font Doc, I copied the I bits of the L to make the H, if that makes sense.
Here's one that didn't quite make the grade, from the Spring Gala on the Severn Valley Railway last month. There's a DNG and a JPEG.

Sounds good time to me to call it . And how lovely I do like a steam locomotive being a steam enthusiast :D

Congratulations Jim..

Thanks for the feedback Nicholas. (y)

Your right Jim there’s not much going for this one, so it’s another quick one from me.

Open in ACR, no edits, open in PS.
Copy layer.

Select foreground fence/gate and paste into a new layer.
Sharpen with shake reduction.

On the copy layer blur with zoom, moving the start point over the space between the train and the guard.
Adjust levels.
Add a mask and with a soft brush paint with black to remove the blur around the train.

On the background layer, sharpen the front of the train and the guard.

Flatten.

Crop for the uprights in the foreground and the position of the train.
Add the border with stroke.

SAVE.

In ACR:
Converted to b&w
Added some clarity
Sharpened

In PS:
Added grain- maybe bit much
Cropped
Tried to straighten but didn't really work so omitted
Saved as jpeg

This obviously wasn't a popular pic to edit!

So with only 2 entries the judging is even harder :)

Rhodese I like the way you've used the zoom-blur technique, it's brought the loco into the central position for emphasis. The cattle-pen railings are still a bit prominent but a good effort.
Doctor O I like the b/w conversion and don't mind the grain at all, it gives the shot an old-school, film effect. I think it's a little bit too tightly cropped for me though, but another good effort.

Rhodese wins this one by a short nose or a whisker, whatever terminology you want to use:)

This isn't a good shot and here's my go.

Over to you Rhodese, lets hope we get more customers this time:)

Thanks Jim goodonya.
Yes, entries are getting thin on the ground. Why? Anybody.

Question.
I know it’s a bit late, but I’ve just realised that when I put up a jpeg of a raw using the save for web function, PS makes adjustments to the RAW.
So how do I put up an untouched image as a “Preview.” along side a link to the RAW?

If I don't get an answer by tomorrow morning, I’ll post a link only.

Rhodese.

Thanks Jim- it was a bit tight- was trying to avoid it looking like it was slanting as couldn't strighten

Well done Rhodese:clap:

I take the raw and open a copy from ACR then save as a jpeg in PS without any changes. That gives two files- the raw untouched and a jpeg untouched other than any base settings applied for use as a preview. I'll then edit the raw and create my fully edited jpeg although I always open the raw as a copy- habit more than anything these days

Mornin all,
Cheers Doc,
Doc I think that's what I do :), but on saving from PS (Save for web), I noticed that PS enhanced the image. I didn't want that as the whole point is to show a copy of the unedited raw.
I couldn’t find any thing about saving RAWs “as is” on the web.
So after a play here's what I have done to put this image up.
From Bridge to ACR no edits open in PS, Image size, fit to - 1024 X 728px - 72ppi -Resample Automatic. OK.
Then save as jpeg, keeping it below 200k (level 4)

I'm not sure I quite understand Rhodese but when I open a RAW with PS, if I've already opened it before ACR will automatically go to the settings I used before so to use an unedited version I hit the "default" button and that reverts to original settings, Then I open in PS and saveas JPEG. Does that make sense?

Hi Jim,
It’s not the getting it into PS that concerns me. It’s the saving it from PS that’s the problem, if I save for the web, PS edits the image, i.e. brightness, resulting in an image that is not an untouched RAW.

Rhodese.

My "untouched jpegs" I tend to get from ViewNX2, and leave everything on zero, WB on auto, and picture style on standard...

Onto this one.....

Opened in ViewNX2
Simple start, upped contrast, shadow protection to max, bit of highlight protection
Straighten

Into PS
B&W conversion with Channel mixer
Lightened and increased contrast on beach only with adj layer and mask
flip horizontal
(Then noticed the letters on the boat so had to do those too....
Individually select words, flip, distort / skew to suit)
Lens correction to take curve off the sea line
Increase vert perspective distortion to bring rope into prominence
Increase again just on the beach half of the frame, blend with layer mask and gradient
Crop
Slight grey vignette.
