THE PP GAME!

Tick tock 10 minutes people :)

Good morning everyone, hope you are having a good weekend
Speech speech I hear you cry or maybe not

So, out of the darkness cometh the light, and I have to say everyone did a good job in finding that light in different ways from an image most would have binned on first view

Ok London, a vibrant bright city. some times I wish it were not so bright and I could see the stars, a very rare sight indeed
Detail, once the light came forward , how much detail could be found, I think this was important
Balance, building water, sky
Over all what could be rescued from such a poor start

I have decided not to pixel pick but just give "my" preferences, right or wrong, you can hiss and boo at the end

Graham
I do understand what you were trying to do with the very black sky but for me it lost too much detail and looks a bit flat, Sorry

Cathy,
Wow a lot more detail, love what you did with the water but a fair bit of noise in the sky and I feel you lost a lot by the crop, looks very busy in an already busy scene, it's not that it's wrong, just not my preference, sorry

Rhodese
A bit mutated for me, think you could have pushed it a bit more in the buildings and the sky is a little dark sorry

Neil
A bit dark again, star effects hmm not sure that worked

Phil
Good sky and building but I'm not so sure about the Gaussian blur on the water, it's also gone over the boat

John
A very different look with the colour, good light and good detail

Matt, a little dark in the sky but the rest is very good

Michael
A bit like Graham's a bit too dark in the sky and lost detail, Sorry

Ben
Came in late and Wow really like this, sky is well balanced against the buildings and lights

So my winner is Ben, well done

Will post my edit shortly

Ok my edit and I really tried to push it, maybe to much for some, wanted as much detail as I could get

All in Lightroom 5

Crop and lens adjustments
Shadows up and highlights down
Clarity and vibrancy up

Then I went about painting everything with brushes, clarity, vibrance, and so on, had to pull back the highlights with the brush a lot
took about 1 hour so a lot of work

Used the WB dropper till I got the look I wanted

H

And what am I supposed to do with that :suspect::thinking::)

Ask Ben to give you a clue as to how he feels it should be treated :D

Or just press a few actions or presets & sorted 2 minutes work :D

Or ---------- I'm sure you WILL think of something

Everything you should not do

Auto everything
Lens flare
Ps6 auto HDR (how crap is that )
crop and straighten
Spot removal
Ouch! bad me lol
10 mins
FEEDBACK OK, YOU CAN LAUGH

Again well done Ben.
My edit.

Open in ACR, slight tweak to WB open in PS.
Copy layer,
Select left half of image, copy and past into new layer, flip horizontal and align with layer below.
SAVE.
On the copy layer crop to include the part of the flipped selection that is not showing.
Flatten.
Roughly select all the sky up from along the roofline, feather by 50 pixels.
With the sky still selected, in levels bring the sliders in to maximize the sky.
Inverse the selection and again in levels move the centre slider a little to the right.
Deselect
SAVE.
With the spot healing brush, remove the sensor marks,
Dodge and burn to accentuate the pattern created in the roof.
SAVE.
Select all and using stroke make the border.
SAVE.
Save for web.

FEEDBACK OK.

lifted shadows and reduced highlights
detail enhancement
colour and grain NR in the sky
Sharpen building
removed 4 or 5 dust spots
vibrance increase
saturation decrease
slight rotate and crop.

Good edits Rhodese and Graham

OK, went to town on this one to get it looking sufficiently different to the original.

In Lightroom - Daylight white balance then auto tone, decrease highlights, shadows, blacks and whites. Increase clarity, sharpness and NR. Cloned out dust spots, slight rotate.

Took 5 exposures and imported into Photomatix. B&W Artistic filter. Back into LR for more noise reduction.

Took 20 minutes, also messed around with Topaz BW Effects in PS which looked OK, but settled on the HDR image

This image seems to have made us all go a bit

I've fiddled in LR & PE10 & Picasa & done so multiple times in each.

Not sure if the end result is a space ship as I've been watching too much Sci Fi or reflection of building in the lake but I had to stop as I kept fiddling too much.

30 minutes & FEEDBACK fine.

^^^ Sorry that's just to good and should be eliminated on these grounds....
Far to flashy!!!;)

suffering succotash batman!

Good morning to you & a very sunny one here & mild.

And thanks for your kind comment :)

Hell on Earth: LOL can't tell if your edit is serious, apart from the sun I actually like it, not usually a fan of HDR though.

Rhodese: love the symmetry, and nice balance overall, great idea and very creative.

Overbez: I like the subtlety of your edit, nice detail in the sky!

matt666: like the moody feel and it definitely suits B&W, the low contrast is an interesting effect and looks vintage, well done.

Flyring Giraffe: this is quite a departure from your normal style, like the split tone effect but not sure about the high key, looks slightly over-exposed but it's certainly creative.

Daydreamer: like the craziness of the reflection here, it has a slight yellow glow overall though, a bit of a colour cast, apart from that it's a creative edit.

and the winner is.....Matt666,

with Rhondese and Overbez closely following,

well done Matt, I was looking for a black and white edit as I thought it suited the photo well, and my own edit is in mono.

here's mine:

LR5: converted to BW,
Highlights -
Clarity +
Tone Curve: Highlights +
sensor dust removal using clone tool,
sharpened and removed all noise reduction for more detail,
exported as jpeg sharpened 'standard' mode for screen.

well done to everyone who entered, and just so you know, you can win by sending me packs of chocolate hobnobs...that's my favourite bribe.:nuts::gag:

over to you matt! ;)

Well done Matt

Ben, of course I was serious! how could you ever doubt it :suspect:
