It is a joking(?) expression of theft, pure & simple.
Hiring a vehicle with a 6litre engine and swapping it out for the 4.8litre engine in the hirers own vehicle.

How many times this has actually happened or (most/all?) some of the stories are true vs hypocryphal is moot

But I recall a story dating back IIRC the 1970's of a Ford Mustang owner who rented a new model that had a newly introduced bigger engine. As I recall he did the same but swapped it back........after he had taken his Mustang on the racetrack and completely thrashed the hire cars engine.

@simon ess it just provides a little insight into how some think, that is so unhinged it's funny.
