I always found mine overexposed between 1 and 2 thirds of a stop, figured it was just a quirk.
Bright light might introduce diffraction if it stops down too much. I found anything past 5.6 started to soften so i'd often sit in A-mode to prevent that. It doea however mean you hit the iso200 and 4000th sec limits quite easily.
As for IR, I don't think the x30 will do the long exposures necessary for a filter.
