The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

:runaway:

My old x10 was set to jpeg only. Will need to have another play with both when it (eventually..) arrives!

Good idea Nod, will do. I will be interested to see the comparison between in camera adjusted RAW and what I could do in PS or LR (if I get that). It's very encouraging to note how impressed each of you are with either the JPEG or RAW files, and judging from the images displayed here the quality from these cameras is there regardless of final output. Best of both worlds really, which I'm sure will help me as I learn.
I'm probably leaning toward the X20 now, after all your v.helpful comments. Getting a bit ahead of myself, but is it possible to use one of those auto opening lens caps with a filter ? From what I've read it doesn't seem you can as the filter adapter ring would compromise the function of these caps. I can see me getting a bit poncy with a nice leather half case too, just to add perfume to the flower as it were

Hi Rene, As Nod said it's well worth doing a comparison test of your own. But speaking from personal experience with an XF1 which my wife has and an X20 which I have. Both can produce really good JPEG images and I have made acceptible A3+ prints with files from both cameras using this format.

But I can make distinctly better A3+ prints from both cameras when the files have been shot in the RAW format (then converted to DNG) and processed correctly using either Lightroom or Photoshop. I cannot pass comment on the X10 as I've never had one or any images from one to work on.

Hope this helps.

However Most people find that the X10 is an exception, due to its strange sensor ... few have been able to improve on the Jpegs which are exceptional.
This is not true on either the XF1 or the X20 which both produce excellent jpegs, as we have all seen... but their raws can be even better.
.
I've tried the X10 in JPEG+RAW mode and I can get better results with RAW but the improvement is minimal and IMO not worth the trouble. Because of this I've never tried RAW with my XF1 but from what's said here, it may be worth a try.

Hi Jim, Give it a go I think you'll be quite surprised at the results.

I did JPG originally but after giving RAW a go on the XF1 images I wouldn't swap back now - don't get me wrong the JPG images are good straight out the XF1 but with RAW and LR5 you can really make them pop.. at the end of the day though its all down to personal preferance

Figured I'd put up a couple taken with my old x10.. A little different to what's been posted recently but hopefully not too bad ;)

 all shot jpeg iirc!

I'm still shooting RAW+JPG. I figure best of both worlds, usually I use the JPG as a guide and something to compare the RAW file too - without this sometime's I'd have been happy with slightly flat looking RAW files. Velvia can look great for colours but tends to blow shadow detail, for example.
I find in LR5 that the camera profiles (e.g. velvia, astia etc) on RAW give a very comparable result to the SOOC JPGs. LR4 didn't seem to handle the RAWs as well in side-by-side comparison but LR5 is great so far.

Also, you can convert (slightly awkwardly but with good results) RAW to JPG in camera, too.

Just a heads up guys, Amazon has the X10 on a lightning deal for £189. I dont have one but am sorely tempted. Would you guys recommend one. I have a Canon S95, would this be a upgrade? I like the idea of a viewfinder.
Opinions welcome!

Thanks guys!
I don't see it at that price John? But yes, I'd highly recommend it (y)

Biased? Us?:D

I try and make sure that I get 2 days off every week....doesn't always happen though!!!

Ooh, nice! Shame I don't have the cash right now :coat: It's definitely worth it at that price though - if you've got the cash, you'd be mad not to!

Yes, definitely, just reaffirms what others have said, And puts to bed any worries I had over the cameras RAW file capabilities.

I posted a comparison a few pages back. Onlya basic shot but was trying out the raw and jpeg shooting and the raw was better by the time I had had a play with it. Jpegs are fine if like Nod you are 'over' all the PP malarky but I like to play so I go with RAW.

I pleased to see this is one of the busy threads on TP and it's ages since I posted anything here so I'll make amends now!

It’s nice to see you back.

Them be a decent set Jim.

Jim, on the right in the first one, low centre-edge, is that one of those intergalactic scout raiders from the planet Zog? It looks like it's ether entering or coming out of,"Invisibility cloak mode.".

Some years back (May 2003) I captured one with a very similar shot taken over the I.O.W. I did post it on here a while back; it was one of my first digekul snaps, taken with a 2MP point and shoot FUJI A2.0.

This is the picture. I hope it's allowed as it was a LICKUL FUJI.

Rene, you're right, the filter adapter ring will stop you fitting the auto opening cap. You MIGHT get away with a filter fitted directly to the X-20's lens if you can find one the right size but the auto cap might keep slipping off. You should also be aware that the petals of the auto cap are visible through the OVF (but then again, so is the lens at wide angles!)

I think waiting for the XF1 in the Fuji refurb store is takes ages. Tempted to order via Currys online and pick up a Tan XF1 tomorrow. Would love to test it out over the weekend with the family. Mainly want to take group snaps and my baby.

You could be right there Rhodese but it's more likely to be a reflection I didn't clean up :) Like your shot of the ufos, worthy of inclusion in the PP thread :)

I just started getting lots (for me anyway) of notifications of likes on one of my Flickr photos. After a bit of investigation it turns out that this shot has been used in the Flickr blog. I'm pretty surprised by this given that it was one of the very first shots that I took on my new XF-1! Delighted but still surprised!

Just ordered an X10 last night from Amazon so hopefully it will be here this weekend . So now I need some advice on which case and filter adapter to go for.
Love the Kelpies shot Leslie.

Damian, welcome to the forum...

Have you ever heard of the song that goes 'I hate you so much right now' ??? Super shots, a few more explores amongst them no doubt! :)

Leslie, congratulations on the Flickr blog, well deserved as it is a wonderful shot!

Also congratulations on your new snapper, John.

Damian, me being cheeky can I further suggest, a levels adjustment. In levels move the two outer sliders in to meet the histogram. :). See what you think.

Rhodese.

I went and ordered the XF1. Mainly for the Mrs but I can see myself taking it out with the baby and for any quick snaps when I don't want the DSLR kit out!
