The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

I've just bough an X10 refurb, so far I'm very impressed with my (relative) bargain. I bought this to fill the compact void in my life :)

Hi Iris and welcome to the X10 gang :)

Look forward to seeing some of your shots shared with us.

Hello,

Most probably I will storm quite a debate with this post so I apologise in advance for my ignorance.
I'd like to buy a x100 and I've got my heart set on this.
However, the lack of zoom kind of puts me off.
Why would I buy a x10 (which has a zoom) and NOT a x100 where the reviews are a massive push towards that way ?

Thank you very much indeed!

Thanks Jason. Using the clean cornish air and quite a few of the shots use the Velvia film simulation. I do find I'm using Raw more often now but they sure do require some disk space.

I'm going to get myself a NAS I think. What do the rest of you do for storing your X10 images?

I am shooting raw at the moment. My workflow basically is this:

Shoot the pictures, load the RAWs onto my laptop into a named folder (I used to just name the folder with the date but that made it too hard to find anything, now I use a name I will recognise such as "Holifair festival" or "Walk in Porthleven with lake" something like that), I then load the RAWs into lightroom with my own preset and go through each one tweaking and/or marking them for rejection as I go. I then delete all the rejected ones from lightroom and from the disk so they are permanently gone (Because of this I sometimes keep images that i wouldn't normally just incase I fancy trying to rescue them later), I then export them as JPEGs with my watermark. After that I put the whole folder (JPEGS and RAWs) onto an external hard drive and delete the RAW's from my laptop. That way I have the RAW and JPEG backed up and still have the JPEGs on my laptop so save on disk space. I delete older folders or ones I don't think i'll need access to off of my laptop but keep them on my external HD just incase.

It sounds like a lot of steps but to sum it up :Shoot, load onto laptop and edit/delete/export, load the whole folder onto external HD then delete raws from laptop. :D

Well the X10 is great but it isn't a X100 plus zoom. If your heart is really set on the X100 plus zoom, you'll just have to buy both!

I also was very keen on the X100 given what I'd seen of the IQ, but I couldn't bear to be fixed completely at 35mm equiv (or whatever). Eventually I realised the X10 gives me the zoom, the control, the fun, and absolutely sufficient IQ for my needs, given I don't print at A3 or whatever (I haven't actually printed at all, really!).

The A3 print quality is excellent!
At ISO 100 you will not be able to tell the difference between an A3 print from the X10 and a DSLR.
I have printed to A3 from ISO 800 and it still looked acceptable, but I'd normally recommend as low an ISO as you can get away with.
As always - do your own tests :)

Just received the x10.

Main command dial doesn't work nor can I adjust flash settings with the jog dial.

There seems to be a lot of settings to go through at the moment.

Will ring fuji tomorrow to get it sorted.

Anything we can help with?
The X10 is well know for it's bewildering and inexplicable interaction between modes.
For example, I've never managed to get into ISO 12000 without a major battle and a minor headache.
And if you read back though this thread you will see that getting focus assist working is also a mare.

Tell us what mode you are in and other relevant setting and more details about what you are trying to achieve and we will see if we can help!

Thanks Duncan

In A or manual the main dial won't alter any settings, clicking it in doesn't help either. In manual I can only change shutter speed not aperture( clicking on the dial doesnt help) I have to use the rotary dial at the bottom

Hmm - that doesn't sound right
But as already demonstrated earlier on this page (see the blank screen puzzle), there are people way better at this than me :)

In manual you need to press the main dial inward to change from adjusting shutter speed to aperture.

On A the ratio of speed to aperture is fixed ... If you move the main dial both shutter speed and aperture change to give the same relative exposure.
But you can still use the exposure compensation dial.

My dial when rotated doesn't alter at all full stop.

Got my x10 back from fuji about a month ago and I'm noticing that my images don't seem straight.

I've taken a photo of a spirit level and it does seem that the camera is off a bit and images that should be straight are not

Anyone else experience this?

Contact Fuji to check they did the software upgrade. I believe it came about due to alignment issues.

Nice one for sharing that. I'm a photo hoarder though - can't bring myself to delete even one photo hence the requirement to get a decent back up device :)

Well the only ones I delete are the ones that are out of focus or just really crap. All the rest are backed up on an external HD. I only keep JPEGs on my laptop's HD purely to save space. The RAW's are still safe on my external.

Ordered my X10 pack today to send off for sensor swap. I'd better keep my fingers crossed as I only have about four weeks before I head off for the Korea/Japan/Munich holiday.

Ordered my X10 pack today to send off for sensor swap. I'd better keep my fingers crossed as I only have about four weeks before I head off for the Korea/Japan/Munich holiday.

My sensor swap took 3 weeks (and a few days) but that was some weeks ago. I called Fuji, a week last Wednesday, as my rubber grip, on the back, was coming away and they said their 'hectic' phase was over and they expected a turnaround of one week with sensor changes and general repairs.

My return box came to me two days later, I posted my X10 the following day, two days later had email confirming they had received it, another email a few days later saying it was being returned, yesterday it arrived back via City Link and I was able to track its progress through their (City Link) systems.

I have checked it quite thoroughly and can't find anything wrong. It was interesting (this time) to find a 'quality' check tick sheet enclosed saying they had checked absolutely everything.

So I am happy and hope there are no more problems.

Good luck with yours, keep posting your shots and looks like a really good trip for you soon

Yikes
Theoretically OK - but there's been enough reported trouble with sensor swapping that it could take longer!
I hope you have a backup plan - just in case!!!!!!!

Hey John...

Hmmm - I should be nervous and am. Just need to keep on the case with Fuji. I've only had good experinces so far so hope it will be all good.

Thanks - I will in fact last night I placed up a few from the Croatia/Bosnia road trip. Will post them in a minute. Still have to get up the Dubrovnik, surrounding islands and Plitvic lake shots!

Duncan - I sort of do. I have the second X10. But without the sensor swap my nighttime Tokyo shots will be a bit of a mess.

I use a NAS drive and I am very happy with it.

Mine is a 2Gb capacity split into two separate 1Gb drives set to mirror 1. So if one drive fails, the other will still have an exact copy of my data saved.

It's really useful to be able to connect to it from anywhere in the house via WIFI too.

Highly recommended.

Here a few from the road trip. One piccy of some of the friends I was traveling with - really trying with the shallow DOF on the X10 ;-)

This is really a kind of filla set between Sarejvo, Dubrovnik and Plitvik that I put up online last night for my friends so I wasn't going to post anything from it - but here you go anyway.

Hi Neil - I've been looking at NAS 2TB (I guess you meant TB not GB) as well. I can see you can pick them up for about £150. Thanks.

Well, I know why my box took a while to arrive. They didn't attach the right postage aparently so I was charged 3.20 by royal mail before they delivered it (I didn't know it was the box at the time I paid for it). Time to e-mail fuji methinks.

Not sure when I'm going to send it off though, its the only digital camera I have! At least most of you have other cameras that you can use in the meantime, I won't have anything!

A NAS is a great idea... If you get a decent one and configure it properly, you can access the contents from anywhere (as long as you've got a decent mobile broadband signal). ;)

I've been stuck in hospital for the past few days but deliberately took the X10 in with me. I've also got my laptop and a decent tethered mobile signal! :)

My daughter... Seven weeks old today!

Shot from the fourth floor of the hospital. I wanted to have a mess about with some 'tilt-shift' stuff and this was the ideal opportunity.

Again, taken from the fourth floor of the hospital. This is the National Library of Wales and it sits looking rather majestically over town. The light in the evening was gorgeous.

Souldeep, is no 2 of your pics above the lake at Prozor?

I'm impressed. Not too far off. It was actually beside the road E73 (Pan-European Corridor Vc). This specific section runs from Sarajevo down through the Balkan towns like Mostar to the coast. The lake itself starts at Konjic and extends all the way to Ustirama. The Neretva river runs out and all the way down this route. A true fest for the eyes whilst looking for alternatives to driving boredom. The food along the way is lovely and I have some photos but it may offend some people so I decided not to post it.

More about the lake http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jablaničko_Lake

I intend to return and kayak/camp a large section of the Bosnian trail but logistics require some planning!

I had the same postage problem. I emailed, and they've replied asking for proof of postage for a refund. It means cutting up the box, and I'm not sure I'll bother. Main thing is to let them know they have a problem in their system!

Really glad you did, they are terrific! I particularly like the lake pano, and also the one of the couple in front of the lake. Nice!

Thanks for your comments Chris. I really struggle with blown highlights in my pano shots but in this instance it was thick white clouds. It seems to me that the best pano's come out of very low light or dark situations although I have seen some other posts where I have been amazed at the detail in the clouds on a pano. Need to look back on the thread and ask the talented individuals responsible for the shots, what they actually did to deal with the WIDE dynamic range required by the camera.

Loving some of the photos posted on this thread. It does look like a great little camera. Well I hope so, as I've just agreed to buy a Fuji refurb one with the sensor replaced. Can't wait to get hold of it and start snapping.

Hi Soul Deep,

Yes I did mean TB rather than GB. Would have been a little under-sized otherwise, huh!

I think I paid somewhere in the region of £150 for mine. It is a Buffalo Link Station.

I played around with a QNAP Nas and sent it back because it just didnt seem to work properly. I spent hours with the tech support rep from Qnap ( David, who was brilliant) and it worked fine till I started changing settings from the norm and swapping drives!
In the end, I just use a couple of external drives linked to my Mac for auto backups and file saving and a 2 TB drive connected to my wireless router that all computers can access.
I have my photo library on an external drive and can connect any computer to it, which is what I first wanted a NAS for.
So, my set up is kind of like a NAS but much cheaper and much easier to set up and use!
Allan

You'll love it

Allan - I'm looking at a plain old external 2tb drive I could hook up in the same way as you have as well. They are certainly cheaper than the NAS drives. Just can't make a decision at the moment. Running out of disk space fast so I'd better hurry up and take the plunge ;)

Incredible photos Souldeep - I would never have guessed they were from a camera which would be classified as a compact in most eyes.

Do you use the optical vf or use the screen most often?
