Got my BT bill today and I'm not mean but as a matter of principle feel annoyed about the calls to Fuji on their 0844 number which are chargeable. I should of looked on saynoto0870 numbers for an alternative :bonk:

The alternative is 01234 217724 and ask for Digital Camera Support department.

Just thinking since I bought my X10 it has been back at Fuji 25% of the time and still there now waiting for new thumb grip :shake:

That was a good idea. I sent mine in for software upgrade and fixing the grip, on Monday and today the job tracker was still saying "Not received at service department". So I checked with Royal Mail's tracker and it was apparently delivered at 8:21 am Tuesday. When I rang Fujifilm just now, the customer service guy found that it had been placed in a wrong queue, for an estimate since I hadn't sent in proof of purchase with it! He's agreed to move it to the right queue, and says it should be done within a week. But apparently these software upgrades are pretty quick.

Moral of the story: check the service status and if in doubt, ring them! :rules:

Blimey 103 pages and I only wanted a brief summary of owners thoughts on the X10 so far! I can't read all that, so is anyone able to put the salient points from this thread into a short paragraph or two?

What is the situation with the 'orb' issue? Are new cameras coming out with revised sensors/firmware, or whatever is needed to resolve this?

Sorry, only just started researching this and so far it looks like a toss-up between the X10 and the Canon GX1.

I come from initially using Canon 40D/550D, then downsizing to Lumix G3, now thinking about this, as I don't get enough use to justify numerous lenses sitting around, etc.

If you want a camera that will record what goes on in and arround your life. But not have to lug around the kitchen sink then the X10 could be for you.

The orb problem is solved (you might need to send it in for a sensor change and software upgrade) but the new ones seem to be mostly done.

If you like the look of the sample shots that others have taken on this thread and they are the sort of thing you want to do. Then it could well be your next camera.

Many of us have other cameras as well, but almost everyone uses them less now. The X10 will not beat a DSLR and good glass for ultimate quality.
But that is not what most Photography is about. The X10 is an all round nice camera to use. (and people love the "Look")

Came down the other morning and my patio door had broken on the inside glass.
I must have a poltergeist.

still it made a shot.

I bit the bullet and sent mine off for the "repair after the software update after the sensor change"
They should get it tomorrow.
Hopefully, this time it should work properly otherwise it's going back to Jessops for a swap.
Them I can start all over again!
Allan

OK cheers Duncan, that makes sense - if it ain't (observably) broke, don't fix it!

cheers! :)

It's so true. I've taken over 10000 shots by now and not found one orb - and lots of night shots as well. I'm on old sensor, version 1.02 of the software. Funny old game. Until they turn up and bother me I'm not going to worry.

I am told that if the serial number starts with 22 or higher it was made with the new sensor, but it is not certain.

The thing to do is not worry... but try to get orbs with sun on crome or water. If you get them, send it in to the service centre to have the sensor changed they send out free posta boxes.
It is no real problem, hundreds of us have done it, and a few have not....:)

How long does it take for the postage boxes to arrive? Got an e-mail over a week ago saying they were sending me a box but its still not here.

LOL - it's City Link - who knows!
Having done a drive by and don't care to me on Monday, I rearranged for Thursday (tomorrow).
I've been away and just got back to find they have made attempts to deliver both days I have been away and now they have defaulted to only option is me to pick up from the depot.

Their office is open at 8am tomorrow...
Cue Mr Angry from Somerset! :bang:

The empty box comes out Royal Mail, the full one by City Link. Fujifilm forgot to put any postage on my empty box, so I had to pay their postage AND a handling charge! Not best pleased. They guy who took my phone call re the software update says they tend to batch up the orders and the box would probably be sent the next Friday. So I spoke to him Monday of last week, and the note about inadequate postage turned up the next Saturday. Camera went off on Monday... and went into the wrong queue as I said above. It's now been received by the service centre... and I wait... :bang:

I can't blame Fuji - apart from deciding to use City Link...

Now the backlog is cleared, I suspect they have gone into "normal" mode.

Boxes usually arrive next day, after a week a phone call is in order.

Taken with my X10 but with a fair bit of PP (sorry but I do fiddle) and part of the PP thread.

It has been a mix of slight HDR with Dynamix, playing with saturation, shadows, highlights, sharpening but a lot with selection of individual parts of the picture.

When I upload pictures to TP they never look as good as on my laptop (like the last post of mine)

Is there a technique where I am missing the point with or does it apply to everyone every time

I think a lot of the photo sharing websites like photobucket apply 'corrections' to images. I've read quite a lot of posts grumbling about how they ruin the image. Flickr et al are notorious for it...
However, probably a good thing for 80% of the population, but less good when you have prepared the image on a calibrated monitor and have it just right.
If you aren't using a calibrated screen then photobox may be trying to fix your dark/light, over/under saturated image for you.

Even 'pro' sites like Smugmug apply sharpening to the viewed image, but at least all the modifications are under complete control of the account holder.

If you have no way of getting what you want from Photobucket then probably time to look elsewhere.
Fist place to go for comparison has got to be the TP Galleries!

Thanks for the explanation Duncan - much appreciated

I guess the same applies to all who put photos up & so there are more than just me who may get a tad frustrated.

Hi all, very interested in an X10, or maybe an X100, and have tried to read up in this thread but there are thousands of posts although I am mainly interested in its revised orb issue/software updated latest form. I have a couple of easy questions if anyone could summarise an answer...

1) If you buy a new or possibly refurb X10 is there a way to know you are getting one with the revised sensor and software and not older stock?

2) If you buy a refurb from Fuji, does anyone know if they still do a sensor change and software update either as it comes or do you have to return it?

3) If I acquired an updated X10 either new or secondhand with the sensor change, does that mean the software will have already been done? Some posts seems to read that a second return to Fuji has come around for a newer software release after some X10's had previously had the sensor change. Is the soiftware not user upgradeable?

4) Is it quite a quick and silent camera in operation (e.g no zoom motor)? I do a lot of street/urban stuff where I was looking for speedy and unobtrusive but capable of A3+ images. I do some on my Canon G11, but I don't like the motor driven zoom.

Thanks

Daydreamer - the detail in the house/cottage shot is really good. I like the shot :-)

My X10 and ORB update...

I offically have ORBS going on, on my night time shots, using the new X10 I have been using since Cornwall a month or so.

My old X10 never had them. Strange.

Anyway as I'm not happy with how the night shots look I am going to send my X10 off for the sensor update.

1) No. You need to phone Fuji with the serial number and they will be able to tell you.

2) Again it would be best to phone Fuji to confirm this. Some models may have the new sensor as a refurb unit but only a phone discussion will allow you to be certain.

3) The software is normally user upgradeably however in this specific issue Fuji have been asking for the cameras to be sent back in.

4) It's a manual zoom - and camera can be set to silent. Not motor driven sounds.

There doesn't seem to be a reliable way. Fuji should know, if you ring them and quote the serial number. At this point, I would be surprised if a refurb bought from them did not have the sensor upgrade, as it will be expensive hassle for them to do it later. New stock for what is probably not the fastest selling camera is more doubtful.

2) If you buy a refurb from Fuji, does anyone know if they still do a sensor change and software update either as it comes or do you have to return it?

See above. If it's not been done, they will do it.

I suspect any camera that goes in now will have the software upgrade done automatically; it's basically just the early birds that didn't get it. Mine is still in the post on its way back. Again, you'll have to ask Fujifilm to know for sure. Firmware is user-upgradeable but for some unknown reason this software upgrade is not.

Yes, it has a silent mode that turns off pretty much all sound (and the flash, and the autofocus assist light). But it's pretty quiet in normal operation!

And the manual zoom is a design triumph! Prety much silent and very precise. I loathe the zooms driven by those little nipples on the shutter button.

Thanks very much for the answers. Typically Fuji refurb shop is oos today... could be good though as fresh ones indicate they are likely newly refurbed.

This is getting ridiculous!
Still no X10...

Even though I rang at 8am yesterday they couldn't deliver same day, so postponed delivery till Friday (today).
Mid morning the website status indicated the parcel was delivered last Monday, so called them again!
They said they would investigate and call back - which they didn't.
Called again mid afternoon to find my parcel status has already been escalated and are investigating. They don't know why it went wrong and can they call me back... :(
This time they did call me back and although they gave no reasons for the problems they offered to attempt delivery tomorrow (Sat) and that I will get a call to confirm the parcel is on its way.
I'm now on my third parcel tracking number! :cuckoo:

It will be a cold day in hell before I ever send anything via City Link :bang:

I must say I have never had a problem with City Link. A few years ago, I used to get parcels delivered very regularly and the guy would turn up like clockwork at 1030.
One day, after taking my daughter to school, I got home around 0930 and the City Link van was waiting outside.

He said he was early today and guessed I would be coming home from the school run soon, so he waited!

He ( quite rightly) got promoted into the office. Even so, I have always had good service from them since and we seem to have different drivers everytime they call.

I even had an item delivered after 9pm one day, and it was only ordered at 3pm. He had already picked some of his next day deliveries and my house was on his way home!

Ive had my bad experience with them - ordered a Canon 60D, didn't get delivered on time and as I was going away I cancelled the order.

I come back from holiday two weeks later and find a sodden cardboard box on my doorstep... It was very lucky that it didn't disappear. Needless to say I didn't keep that camera!

In the meantime, I'm starting to consider trading down my X100 for an X10. Anybody else done that and have any experiences?

Its arrived and needless to say, I'm very happy. Can definitely see this getting a lot more use than my 450d as its just so much more portable and fun to use!

I have both but even though the X10 ( when it comes back from its 3rd trip to Fuji) is excellent, It can't quite touch the X100 at IQ. When I want pixel peepable shots at wide angle, I use the X100.
For everything else, the x10 excels

Ah, CityLink...

Sent my X10 off. No email from Fuji, but came home to a card through the letterbox. Rang and asked if they could leave with neighbour: 'No problem mate. Leave a note on the door'. Sign on door: 'CityLink - please deliver to no.x next door'. Came home - another card!

Getting my camera back meant a 40 mile round trip and long wait while CityLink found the package.

Why don't Fuji just use Royal Mail Special Delivery?

I love my X10 complete with sensor change. However, the lack of a viewfinder that shows the iso etc (I wear reading glasses!) led me to purchase a Panasonic G3. The problem is I cannot bring myself to sell the X10. The images are superb as are the ergonomics. Why the hell cant Fuji have given it an electronic viewfinder :(

Got my X10 back this aternoon after the software upgrade and grip refix. It seems to have reverted to a more primitive state than after the sensor upgrade (I don't remember having to re-enter the date and other settings that time). I was particularly bothered for ages that I couldn't see the image of what I was pointing at on the screen. Just a black screen with various guides on it. No menu settings seemed to fix this. Then I inadvertently hit "Back" and it appeared. Oh yes, I remember now! That setting I've only used once before (cycling through the screen options with the Back key)!!! :bonk:

Nice to have my friend back. I've now set it up on full manual as part of my "Sunny 16" learning. This is rather hampered by not having f/16, but I guess the extra bit of mental gymnastics is good for me.

I wear bifocals, No problem......

I am not that botherd that it has no information in the viewfinder.. Most cameras I have used in the Past 60 years did not either.
I know what I have set on either the aperture or shutter speed, And I can always have a look at the LCD.

It would be better if it had a certre mark to indicate the focus point though.

I'm led to believe the software upgrade is due to alignment issues after the sensor change which is why it has to be done in house.
