The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

I dunno, they just don't seem to 'pop' compared to many of the shots I see elsewhere (and on this thread!)

I disagree - your first photo is really striking! Nice shot :-)

You could try velvia mode - that helps with the colour vibrancy but its not always to everyone's taste. Personally I quite like the results from Velvia but the images can sometimes look more like a painting than a photo ;)

You also have some options in camera regarding sharpness, contrast etc that when adjusted can really punch out a shot and make a difference to the final results.

up in the lakes this week and brought along all my camera gear. Heres a quicky from the x10 in panorama mode at the top of Catbells

I love landscapes. Both really nice shots. I've taken to messing around with HDR in cloudy scenarios as an experiment to create more contrast.

Well - although I was working most of this weekend I did find the time to get my latest pictures up on FLICKR from the past two weekends in Dorset. I'm working on them backwards so Cornwall set will be next then Croatia holiday.

So here are a few X10 HDR style pano shots. Not everyone's cuppa I know but wanted to experiment anyway :)

Hi Jason

What they don't tell you (posters on here) is they take zillions of shots and painstakingly paw through them to find that one in a million they feel is OK for public showing :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Well that is what I would do - we all have our reputation to safeguard ;)

Seriously there are far better shooters than me but like has been said the first shot of the scaffolding has 'pop' but a shame the hi-vis gear on the men wasn't red as that colour always stands out more.

The second shot is one I doubt I could get to be a keeper without so much work and would assume I had taken other ones of this view that are better.

The third shot is fine perhaps with the shadows looked at and a bit of sharpening.

Overall even the X10 is not a real 'fully' automatic and I doubt many cameras, if any, are. You and I may need to keep reading this thread and try to learn more as I feel the X10 does need encouraging to bring out the good shots

Over on the big boys thread, they're getting excited about the possibility of a X200 in September. I have mixed thoughts on the possibility of an imminent X20; on the one hand Fuji has had to invest a lot to fix the orbs problem and may want to recoup that investment first, OTOH they may want to move on to a new camera ASAP, to get the PR disaster behind them.

Anyway, the time to start making noises about what you'd like in a new camera is not when it's two months away; it's done and pretty much dusted by then. So, on the off-chance that Fuji marketing guys and engineers ever read this thread, what would we like to see in an update to the X10? Of course, it's natural to ask the earth, so to keep us real I think we should say how much more we would be prepared to pay at launch over the X10 launch price for our desired feature. Or what could be dropped, perhaps.

For me, the thing that would really perk up my GAS would be adding a version of the X100/XPro1 hybrid finder. I don't care about the EVF bit; what I want is better information in the finder. Hey, even my Pentax ME shows me the shutter speed in the finder! I would pay 5% extra for that feature (but without it I doubt I'd bother)...

I'd hope they'd sort out some of the basic ergonomic gripes for nothing extra, of course.

I think I'd quite like a GPS capability, but then again I'd like better battery life too. Neither important enough to pay much for, though.

Mine came back for the third time today.
Showing the same faults as it left with...
the Viewfinder pointing to the left and the Distance scale erratic. ( I sent them marked photograps and figures)
They are now sending me a Fourth Box. I have requested a replacement.
I am not a happy bunny.

Doubt we will ever know but I wonder what % of cameras sold have had to have their sensors changed. There will be lots of people with the "faulty" sensor who are not aware of the free replacement or do not consider the orbs a problem - after all what do you expect taking pics of lights/reflections in shiny objects:)

LOL - Absolutely Right!
Although the number and quality of images LindsayD posts on her blog from each visit cannot be fudged and demonstrates there are gifted photographers which this generalisation does not apply!

Good post!
I'm expecting the X20 to follow very soon.
As fast as Fuji can throw together a light makeover so they can avoid pointing out Orbs as a difference between the models.
It would also mean there is less need for a "how do I tell what sensor" test.

I know from my website stats that a lot of Japanese people read this thread; so I wouldn't be at all surprised if Fuji pop in here from time to time.
What would I like to see on the X20?
In no particular order
- Rubber thumb grip that does not fall off.
- Slightly improved AF. It's not the fastest and sometimes it misses spectacularly! Canon offers a configurable choice between accuracy and speed.
- Improved battery life - probably means using a bigger battery.
- Sort out manual focus; it is pretty much unusable at the moment!
- Bulb mode; first press opens, second press closes.
- RGB histogram
- Live view display without the grey bar obliterating the bottom of the image. Either remove the grey or shrink the image fractionally to allow space.
- Not bothered about the viewfinder; it's fit for purpose and miles better than the competition.
- The rotating ring on the back of the X10 makes it impossible to hand the X10 to someone without them changing the viewed image! It is way too sensitive and there is no need to it to duplicate the left/right buttons inside the ring. Needs a bit of a rethink.
- Super macro should be progressive as 28mm is so close that shadows are a serious problem. Be nice to move back slightly and zoom slightly.
- Built in ND filter (like the G12)
- Don't make the replacement physically bigger!

Phew....
I don't want much do I! :bonk:

I'm sure an "X20" is coming along with the rumoured X200. The reports stem from a discontinued announcement on a big retail site for the X100. Well John Lewis in the UK have stopped listing both the X100 and X10. The Photokina event is early September, the cut-off date for replacement sensors on the X10 is September. Looks like a strong coincidence at the very least...

+1 for thumb grip (mine's coming off, after being replaced in the sensor upgrade)

+1 (or +2) for better battery life (plus a battery indicator that gives me more than 3 shots warning... read that, gives me at least 30 shots warning!)

+1 for better manual focus (haven't even bothered to try)

+1 for built-in ND filter (3 stops I guess, like the X100)

+1 for no bigger

Oh, and can we have the option to put the Raw button back to its original approach. I don't use Raw much (Mac/Aperture:suspect:), but when I do I want it to be EASY, not jumping into a menu.

And obviously you are completely wrong about the finder problems, Duncan, perhaps due to spending your time in Wales in the rain and mist! If you ever got ny real sunshine, you'd know what I mean!

I'm finally joining the club and have a refurb unit on the way :) What accessories should I be looking for, where to get them , spare batteries etc? Any tips without trawling 98pages?!

I bought a re-furb from the Fuji site about a fortnight ago. I have tried everything I could think of to produce orbs but I have failed at every attempt. I can only assume my sensor has been replaced.

Oh, and if you do decide to go along this path, then don't forget to use the promo code P10FEB15.

See above.

Woo Hoo!!! Just ordered mine. Gone for the refurb with discount and the genuine leather case at 40% off.

£311 quid plus delivery for both :-)

Well done Colin. You'll love it.

Well, my X10 came back this afternoon after the software adjustment and it seems the images are really clean with no sign of the noise that was there previously.
But, and there's always a but! I have noticed a couple of issues.
First. I take a shot and the image is played back on the screen and it looks great. Them I press the review / playback button and the image displayed looks darker with poor resolution. However, the images look superb when downloaded to my Mac.
Second, the artificial horizon is skewed. If I place the camera on a flat level surface, the horixon line is white. If I put a penny under the right side, I get the line turning green. Plus, all my horizons are up at the left by quite a few degrees. It was perfect when I sent it back and I can't understand how this could happen if all it went back for was a software update

Thirdly ( ok, so it wasn't just a couple!), the camera has four little pips on the base. I am sure the camera sat perfectly on all four of these. Now, it rocks on three, and the three pips it stands on when placed down are white, as if the black paint has worn off or been chipped off.

There will be an email going to Fuji tomorrow. I must say, I am more than a little disappointed by all this. Something seems to have gone wrong here!

Has anybody had any similar problems with their software fixed returned X10,s?

Allan

Well I should finally receive my x10 back tomorrow and will be testing it fully.

After the shambles of it being sent to the wrong customer and them having it for over a month they are sending me a high capacity memory card and a couple of spare batteries. All I can say it better be top notch and still have my Abrahamsson soft release which was glued in...

Hey Paul - great colour in your shots. Were they taken in Velvia mode?

Inspired by some amazing B&W shots I've seen in this thread - Here's a few B&W shots I tried out the past few weekends...

Not so happy with my B&W stuff. Think I need to understand how I can improve this sort of style. Still practise helps towards making perfect.

What case are you guys using? Is the original one the best?

The original case fits superbly and looks really good. 'Tis a tad pricey though!

Mind you the discount code gives 40% off if you buy it with the camera. I didn't! :'( :bonk:

Hi Souldeep some really good B&W shots you have there and this link to a piece of free software may be of interest. Came across on another thread on TP. It sure has a lot of one click options including many B&W.

I spent rather a long time playing with them yesterday as, like you, I want to explore B&W but not happy with the shots on B&W mode or with ways I can can achieve them in CS4 or PE10.

Hi John - thank you. I just need to keep practising with B&W. Wish I had a patron!

Nice one for the link as well. I took a quick look. Looks similar to the idea behind PS plugin effects. I'll have a go with the software sometime and see what I can do. Thanks for sharing :)

Before i order one, does the RAW files work with iPhoto?

Riz, the strict answer is no. Mac Raw support is an OS feature rather than implemented in iPhoto or Aperture. So far, Apple have not seen fit to implement X10 Raw in their Raw updates.

All is not lost, however. You can get Adobe's DNG Converter for free, and run your Raw files through that. Then Aperture at least is happy to take and use the resulting DNGs. I haven't used iPhoto for a while, and haven't checked, but I have heard that iPhoto will take the DNGs.

The work flow is a pain. Last evening I went out with the local Camerabuddies group and took a zillion sunset shots. About halfway through I switched to Raw+JPEG (I normally take just JPEG). Back home, I imported the JPEGs into Aperture and deleted them from the X10. Then I did a separate import of the Raws, storing them on the Mac. Then I... updated DNG Converter to the latest release (you can see how little I use it), and ran it over the directory with the Raws in it, turning each one automatically into a DNG. You get no creative control in this process; it's just batch. Then, import that folder into Aperture.

There is a bit of distortion that rather surprised me. When paging through the images, they first loaded with a flat horizon, then it would pop into a curve! I'm not sure it will show up in a side by side, but here is a couple of images, first the JPEG from the camera...

DSCF3182.jpg

then via the DNG (no extra processing)...

DSCF31821.jpg

PS we stayed there for an hour through sunset; it was a lot of fun. I'm not sure I needed the Raws, but at least I have them. And for the moment, they are also still on the card in camera, in case I want to (and can work out how to) process them again there.

Mine came back yesterday as previously noted.
I had not checked the horizon. But seeing your post I have done so...
I used a levelling plate and clinometer and mine is 1.25 degrees out of true. which looks quite bad in reality. the four standing pips on mine are also rubbed to the metal.

It goes back today as I have this moment received another box. (I hope for replacement this time.) and I am adding that to the fault list.

Oh dear - some of you are really having a drama with the sensor swap. I'm genuinely sad for you. My experience with Fuji was positive but I wonder if I was just lucky now. I really haven’t been encouraged to take the risk and send mine in :(

It's been dispatched from Fuji :-)

Does anybody know which courier they usually use?

Thanks

Colin

Which are the best third party batteries, how many do I need? What's the different shutter releases for?

I've got two Energizer FLNP50 batteries; they were £3.49 from Amazon when I bought them. I've only ever had to change one per day at most. I've got the original Fuji one somewhere but seem to have mislaid it just now. :(

Not sure about the shutter releases (other than a cable release... which I don't have, so can't comment on anyway).
