The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Hmm - looks like it has. Now £85 inc delivery on ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/X10C-UK-K..._Camera_Cases_Bags_Covers&hash=item2572b0e9b2).

Still it's cheaper than the rolls royce of holders - the Gariz case at £123.05 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-GARIZ..._Camera_Cases_Bags_Covers&hash=item3a763d826b)

And the Kaza has easy access to the battery area at the bottom of the case unlike the Gariz which personally, I think is a bit of a design oversight on behalf of Gariz considering how often the batteries need changing ;)

I also like that I don't have to use the full case when I don't feel the need. The half case is usally how I transport my X10 around.

PS - if anyone is considering the Kaza case I suggest an email to them to barter price wise. I think they'll take £10 - £15 off the rpice if you ask them nicely enough hehe

Well, I have lurked around this forum since it began, ummed and arred about many of the issues, cases, batteries, orbs. I’ve always like rangefinders(I know the Xs aren’t), had a few over the last 50 years or so, thought the X100 looked the biz, then came the 10, then there was talk about a proper job coming soon the X1 but nobody said it would be 2k ish. So the top and bottom of it is, an X10 arrived today with case and cards and batteries and a hood from Park Cameras (Used them a lot, I trust em).I ordered yesterday afternoon it arrived midday today. All I can say is “WOW” the only con after a couple of hours use is “There’s no wind on lever, to give that sensation of snatching the next shot.” but a great feel non the less.

Well I've decided I'm going to get an X10 after reading this thread for a while.

I've just got to sell my Sony NEX C3 and I'm also getting rid of my Canon 24-105 because I don't use it.

The X10 will be my new general zoom camera.

Can't wait now :-)

Ditto!
Looks like the X10 is getting a lot more takers now the Orb problem has been fixed and Fuji seems to be getting on top of their support.

Mine got sent for sensor replacement earlier today.
Wish we luck! :p

Hi I have been subscribed to this thread a while enjoying it contents and friendly users.
I too am enjoying my x10. I have my box awaiting return to Fuji for new sensor.
I have been waiting to see what others have been saying about the new sensor as although i have had a few orbs they did not spoil my images.
I look forward to following the thread and learning from it hoping to produce the quality I have seen here

Peter

I attach a few images.

are there any X10 users using a wrist strap? I took the strap off whilst on a walk about with the camera last night ( a few test shots on Flickr, nothing amazing, the light was so grey and flat in Aberdeen for a change :P ) as I wasn't really feeling it, and wondered how much better a wrist strap would be?

cheers

Hi Jason I will give my answer but I am a real ditherer.

First I tried the X10 neck strap which I thought was too short so my wife spliced in a extensions on each side from an old small Lowepro bag.

Next I got fed up with a neck strap feeling like a Japanese tourist

So went back to the neck strap but too long and not able to shorten as the spliced in pieces wouldn't pull through the fittings.

So sent X10 to Fuji for sensor change and asked very very nicely if there was any chance of a new strap and they sent me one as per the original

Got the new neck strap but then getting more used to the wrist strap.

Oh, and by the way, my wrist strap is a walking stick strap which cost around £2 and if really comfortable, looks good and is strong. I originally bought one from Jessops for £7 and it was zero out of 10.

So whats my advice  try each way to see what suits you.

Nice punchy pair of B&Ws!

I carry a wrist strap in my camera case - just in case I need the extra security.
One like this from Amazon.
It can be slipped onto the X10 in a moment.
So far I've not needed it - but it is always there for peace of mind.

The other option is a retro style camera case (see the first post) as they all come with neck straps.

yep, it's the Jap tourist look that bothers me! And the fact it swings around and I'm scared it will come off (unlikely, but semi-possible I guess) - AND if it was on a wrist strap it would take less time to get a shot?

Gordy straps are seemingly highly rated on another popular forum which shall not be mentioned :P

OMG :eek:Do you really want to look like a poser ;)

Here in Devon no one wears designer gear not like some parts of the country - Essex maybe :D But not sure about Aberdeen - is it posh there

PS I had thought about using a Tesco recycle bag to save buying a proper case but I relented to get a Lowepro

Yeah the one I bought came with a Gordy strap. Quite nice (though personally I don't like leather) but not a long way from what you could make with a split ring and leather shoelace :D

Made my own wrist strap for the X-Pro 1with a bit of cord from the pound shop. Keep meaning to upgrade to paracord (it's sitting on my desk).

Re shoulder straps: believe the hype - Artist and Artisan straps really are very nice indeed. But I have a custom made strap from Couch which is awesome.

Aberdeen is 'Britain's happiest city' according to some survey yesterday. It was Carlisle in February 2012 however!!!....so I don't know what Carlisle has done to slip so far in 5 months and put Aberdeen top, because happy people they certainly ain't in the Granite City (in my experience).

Anyway, posh straps? Those Gordy aren't posh are they?!

I have had my X10 now for over a week and I am very impressed. I bought mine as a re-furb from the Fuji site so I had no idea whether or not the sensor had been replaced.

After a great deal of experimenting in yesterday's bright sunshine, I have been totally unable to provoke the dreaded orbs. I can only assume mine has had the surgery.

..got this..love the thing

And the X10 is not designer gear!? One of the big selling points of the camera is it's retro ascetics. You know you’re leading the fashion in Devon :p

I have modified My neck strap fixing, to prevent any chance of scratching by the Stainless steel clips. They can be pushed a short way back to release the cord when Pressing the torsion spring.
(Rather neater than the leather boots provided with the camera)
They are held in place by the slit in the soft leather near their top.

A wrist strap could be fixed in the same way.

How long does the return sensor replacement box normally take as I phoned up tuesday and its being sent to work but nothing yet.

I'm a bit confused with the image quality settings on the x10.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the x10 produces better quality images if the camera is set to produce medium quality images as opposed to fine quality images and the EXR processor is left to process what is in effect 2 x medium sized images into a better overall picture.

Is this true?

If so in what camera modes does this apply ( P, S, A, M and EXR )?

And finally does this hold true for both JPG and RAW files?

The manual isn't too clear on this.

Thats news to me regarding medium being better quality than fine!

The two images combined into one sounds like you may have read about the dynamic range option.

It applies in two different camera modes. EXR and advanced.

In advanced there is a pro night option that I understand does what you are explaining. I have never used this mode myself though.

In EXR I experienced the two images into one for the first time on some evening shots I took a few weeks back. Camera clicked twice and produced quite an impressive dynamic ranged image.

It is not clear because it is not a simple yes no situation

The EXR sensor functions in differing ways to suit the differing needs. and it can do this fully automatically or by setting a "priority".

The Large Fine setting supposes that all the light receptors work individually.
However the Sensor is perfectly able to combine pairs of receptors to obtain less noise and higher ISO, or a greater Dynamic range, or select single for a higher resolution.

To do the first two, (which pairs up receptors) there is obviously only half the number of combined combined pixels available, hence EXR sets "Medium"
The single receptors are the norm in "Large Fine" setting.

It is true that in EXR mode you abrogate many choices to the Sensor firmware. However it does work and it can help.

I leave mine to " Large fine" all the time. When appropriate the camera will automatically change it to "medium" Unless I set "A.S or M" and a fixed ISO.

I think that is clear as mud......

When I phoned for mine, the tech guy said they send them in batches every few days. Mine took about four working days after the phone call. The work took a week.

Funnily enough, I had the email this morning saying they had received my X10 and the work would be done soon and my camera returned. I had the camera back two days ago. :bonk:

Thanks Terry - so are you saying that in A, S or M mode if I have it on auto ISO will automatically drop into "EXR mode"? If I fix ISO it overrides EXR?

sorry for newbie questions.....

No EXR mode only kicks in in EXR mode. M, A and S modes won't switch you to EXR.

After thinking about buying a compact for a while this thread has convinced me the x10 is for me... so I ordered one today and should have it in my mits tomorrow:) can't wait, the 1st compact i've bought since 2000!
I'll get some pictures in this thread as and when...:)

You're gonna love it. I did just as you have done. No regrets.
Get to know it, it's very capable.

One of the reasons I wanted a nice small camera which gave me more DSLR-like control compared to my previous bridge cameras - which, even at 3mp, were good enough for print when I used to write for a few magazines - was to take it fishing. These days I mostly blog. The X10 is great for snatching quick photos while fishing. The macro ability is great for close ups of fish.

Hello stranger - LOL
I can confidently predict it will be WAY better than your last compact.
Do post some piccies when you get it.

A question to the guys who shoot JPEG I have some questions about the settings on my x10. I know much more about film than I do digital photography so I understand the basic mechanics of photography, lenses, aperture ISO shutter etc but some of the more in-depth settings are beyond me.

What do you guys use for colour, wb shift, highlight tone, shadow tone sharpness and noise reduction? If you could explain your reasonings and maybe post some examples that would be great.

Thanks a lot,
Asa

Well I thought I would update my situation with my sensor repair....

Over a month since I sent it in, I discover today they have recently sent my camera to another customer and are trying to get it back! Not happy. Manager has offered to send me a spare unit while they get mine back which I have accepted seeing as I have no camera, but it will not be the end for me. Very disappointed with service so far.

If it was a new unit, not refurbished, when you purchased it, I would ask for a brand new unit on the basis of you do not know how much it has been used or treated by the other person.

It was a refurbed unit but the same still applies. I am actually fuming about this and I dont think they get it :(

I still haven't sent mine off to be 'repaired' yet... The way things are going, I don't think I'll bother!

I've been so busy with work and the new baby lately that I haven't had a chance to post a great deal. I was working in Welshpool yesterday and happened to arrive in town just as the steam engine from the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway was getting ready to depart. It would have been very remiss of me not to go and take a few pictures! ;)

The station is right next to the main A458 so trying to get shots without including passing traffic was difficult.

The X10 is definitely becoming my 'black and white camera'... I seem to prefer the mono output to the colour images I get.
