Hi
Has anybody here gone from Sony NEX system to an X10 and what are your thoughts if you have?
Which is better image, handling, preference etc?
I have a Sony C3 but feel I may miss out on image quality if I switch to an X10, although I prefer the look and idea of the X10.
Thanks
Colin
Hi Colin,
I did exactly that, going from a Nex 5 with two kit lenses to the X10.
I'll try and bullet-point the reasons and summarise by saying I'm far happier with the X10, bearing in mind mine is a 22+ serial No. and seems to have few of the issues that others may have (I've tried to re-create them too!)
Pros:
Better colour balance, the Nex always made people look sickly and was just "off", this seems to be the case with all the Sony Nex models, the 5N being the best of the bunch. The Fuji colour is much better though reds on jpegs can get overblown at times and even turn pinkish if very strong! (seems to be to do with clipping red highlights but I've not found a work around).
More compact, while still not exactly pocketable you get a 4x Zoom for a smaller overall size than the Nex with pancake lens (and even the large 18-55 is only a 3x zoom).
Far better metering/white balance, especially with the fill-flash. It's as good as any camera in this regard. The Sony is very average at this.
Better lens, better than all but the newer and very expensive Nex lenses.
Silent! Nex has a very noisy shutter.
Classier! Equal build but easier handling.
Good Macro ability, Nex only with specific lens.
Cons:
Slightly less detail/more noise, especially in low light. By no means bad though.
Slightly worse battery, good for about 250+ shots after a couple of charges.
Slightly worse focus lock, especially in scenes with no vertical lines. Nex is a touch slower to focus but a little more reliable - still not perfect.
Not quite as good with high speed action, though again Nex not amazing for this either.
Shallow depth of field more limited on X10 but still usable.
That's all that springs to mind for now, but while some will think you mad for moving to a smaller sensor they're not looking at the big picture and the X10 does many things better if those are important to you.
