The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

QUOTE=Dave Pickett;4707370

Has anyone thought to take a deliberate set up orb shot then repeat with the new processor?

www.dpreview.com did a comparison review a few weeks ago. The new sensor seems to have fixed the issue

Seen that Allan, TBH I would rather trust real world reviews from people on this forum!!!!

I don't think there are any new sensor X10's around on these forums yet, sensor replacement only started here at the end of last week so I guess people won't have their cameras back till later in the week or early the following week due to the Bank Holidays.

I guess you've wet our appetites, Chris [...] I'm looking forward to your photos!

Part 2...

We also went to float in the Dead Sea (350 metres BELOW sea level!), and I couldn't resist this (cliche'd) shot (not one of our party, as you might guess from the newspaper).

DSCF17921.jpg

On the way back to Jerusalem, we detoured to this monastery in the desert on the old road to Jericho:

DSCF1830.jpg

Another bit of bizarreness: multi-coloured day-old chicks at the Damascus Gate into the Old City.

DSCF1908.jpg

And finally, on the way up to Galilee we stopped at Jericho (you'll remember the song about the walls tumbling down). From the top of the cable car (up towards another monastery) I liked this view of Jericho, the Dead Sea, and the hills of Jordan beyond it.

DSCF1952.jpg

This visit was an assault on the sense in many different ways. Truly amazing. I hope you liked the pictures.

I read somewhere that most of us are really bad at editing (ie selection) of our own shots, and I'm no exception. I've picked out a few here anyway (far too many, really) that might give something of the flavour of the place, and how well the X10 performed...

We stayed just outside the amazing wall that goes right round the Old City of Jerusalem ( "only" 16th century); this is a corner section, with (I thnk) a mosque inside the wall.

DSCF1477.jpg

The city itself is just jammed; this was taken from a rooftop garden...

DSCF1603.jpg

In one of the most famous churches, mostly horribly over-crowded, but I really liked this sunbeam. Dreadful flaring at the window, of course...

DSCF16301.jpg

Just couldn't resist this spice stall, beautifully laid out with pyramids of spices.

DSCF1641_1_.jpg

The souk is so bizarre; a butcher's shop with meat hanging out next to a fabric shop!

DSCF1643.jpg

... and the souk is VERY crowded!

end of part 1 (sorry I got them the wrong way round!)

This visit was an assault on the sense in many different ways. Truly amazing. I hope you liked the pictures.

Before people send their cameras off, could you please take a 'controlled' picture where you can re-create exactly the same conditions again so we can see some comparisons with the new sensor? :)

another 2 from me today.

Rainy here in the midlands, and the kids are already bored!

Not sure I like the PP on these yet, but they were the best shots from a very bad bunch... :(

Im struggling to get the camera to focus where I want it too. Do you / would you use face detection?

Not sure im getting the most out of this camera at the moment to be honest, but i guess its still early days.

One thing I cant figure out is how do i change the metering method? I cant find an option in the settings for spot, matrix etc??

Press the AF button in most modes and you get the option to change the metering. (Multi, spot or average)

Yeh, that's what I thought. However when I do it I only get multi, no other options

Took these on Friday as the first all day outing with the X10
these shots are of the Whit Friday walk of witness in Saddleworth.
In previous years people have found my Dslr and 2.8 lens rather off-putting. Here they either did not notice or did not care this time. I included a heavy crop of the bandsman to show that it can take it with ease.
Over all the tonal range is rather limited, and I found a number of shot rather overexposed, there is not much I can do about the range but I will have to watch the exposure more carefully. For a number of shots and for some filming I attached the X10 to my walking pole (it has a 1/4 screw head) . I raise this high using the self timer to take the shot, and guessed the framing.

over the day the quality was variable, but it makes a lovely walk about camera.

In the afternoon after the walk of witneess, Saddleworth holds a massive band contest lasting though into the early hours of saturday.

These are taken in the late afternoon and evening in mostly that strange light you get from the sky as the sun goes down.

I don't know what to think about the Quality as the effect is not far off what I was seeing.

There is an Aggravating lack of quick releases and plates suitable for the new generation of small Digital cameras like the Fuji X 10.

My manfotto plate makes a mockery of the whole Idea, as it is far wider than the camera base, and the general size and weight defeat the object of leaving it attached, a swiss plate is no better.

Busisness are failing not because there is no demand but becacaue manufacturers and retailers are so slow on the uptake.

The X10 is a lovely little camera with a real screw for a cable release.. however it has no facility for a remote release in the firmware ( though it has a mini usb connection) and can use it's electronics for multiple shots and delayed action.

How often do we rant about obvious lacks in our new kit, that like in this case woulld cost nothing to include.?

Why the fuss... I would like to use the X10 on top a pole....
But then I am crazy.....

How long is your pole? Its a retro looking camera, so why not try a retro remote shutter release?

7338307760_6b62566c1b_z.jpg

This is one I used in my film days, many years ago. Its operated by air pressure. Put the bulb on the floor and tread on it to release the shutter. The tubing is about 20ft long and can be shortened if required. It is joined in three places to give you different length releases.

I also have an old Nikon Pistol grip with cable release ( look on the X100 thread or my Flickr for images) that works perfectly with both my X100 and X10.

I guess with these still around, theres no need to add anything else to the software!

Yes I have one of those as well. however you dont get the two position feel with them.

Of course that is where the X10 fits into the world of Photography best.

Walk about
Days out
Hill walking
Family and friends
street events

It is the same position taken up By the

XA
the canon QL17
SP35
Super Ikonta
Voightlanda bessa
Vito B
Super solinette
Retina 111

And all the other small High quality Amateur cameras of the past 60 years.
They all had fine quality lenses and were very well made.

The X10 is the Diamond jubilee equivalent......

Those pics seemed to have worked well, but I'm guessing the Velvia setting? Some of the reds are a bit strong for my liking (I had the same problem with some of the Israel shots; thought I had set it back to Provia but apparently not).

I liked the one in the second post with the hitched up kilt!

Here's some Jubilee Celebration shots from my village.
I've picked a dozen to try and tell the story of the day, rather than just picking my favourites.
They aren't quite holiday snaps... But...

I had the big camera with me. 5DII with 135mm f2 used at f2.
It's the first time I've used this lens in anger and it's lush.
But the X10 was being counted on to take all the other shots!

1) Friendly Society Role Call - rain levels varied between light drizzle and stair-rods.
i-GMmzzMX-M.jpg

2) Jubilee Photograph - Lady in red organised it. I was in the crowd for the shot and got spotted trying to take a panorama while everyone was holding up their numbers. Hence for the 'real' shot instead of shouting "Cheese", we had 350 people shouting "Duncan Behave" :D:D:D
i-sgfKWnM-M.jpg

3) These three menaces were wielding their face paint on anyone who stood still too long. I ended up looking like a French Flag :|
i-TvgFxPZ-M.jpg

4) Jubilee Lunch - it was hammering down outside, so the marquee was a popular option.
i-RGfQKqz-M.jpg

5) Yup - hammering down :)
i-hqvxsgk-M.jpg

6) Cream Teas
i-Nd5XdXw-M.jpg

7) Children's Mural - a 20 ft canvas with head shots of most of the village. The children were asked to paint the bodies. It's just asking for trouble :D:D:D
i-vhQJW3x-M.jpg

8) Tug of War - not taken too seriously and was huge fun to watch.
i-k927FT7-M.jpg

9) Cake Cutting - it was this girl's birthday, hence the crown and being invited to cut the cake.
i-Tbdw94g-M.jpg

10) Plenty of cider and beer was consumed. I had the dubious honour of having the first and last pint served by the bar. I have my forum name for a reason :D:D:D
i-pJ5GJtC-M.jpg

11) The day was finished off in style by two bands.
i-cRSsLPS-M.jpg

12) The weather outside was horrendous. Stepping out the marquee onto the village green was like stepping onto a wet sponge. Didn't spoil the party though!
i-3PJqkTq-M.jpg

This set is only from the X10, but the real star of the day was undoubtedly my new 135mm f2 lens.
There's a discussion and some piccies from the Jubilee Celebration elsewhere on TP.

They were set on Provia... But the band jackets seem to have a fluorescent quality that is rather extreme for me. I will have to try the Astia next time.

I rather over sharpened them, when I batch converted them for the web, with IrfanView, I had the settings wrong and did not check. ( It destroys some of the detail)

I know it's early days but has anyone had their X10 back from Fuji yet?

I had a little bit of an 'issue' with my X10 this weekend... I went to a jubilee party yesterday (don't worry, I won't post any pictures from it) and had a bit of a problem with the start-up time from the camera. On average, it was taking around 10-15 seconds for it to be ready to shoot from the moment I switched it on. It took me a while to figure things out but it turned out to be a corrupt memory card. :bang:

Once I'd formatted it, everything was fine again but it certainly had me worried for a little while. I think the problem may have occurred when I connected the card to my iPad camera connection kit.

Strewth - that would have had me sweating bricks!
From what I've heard, to get the best out of an iPad you need an Apple camera. ;)

I know what you mean about the Jubilee :D:D:D
Hence I was keen to get my images up FAST!
But just in case you can stomach a few more - my personal take of the 700+ keepers that are now up in my Blog.
http://www.wild-landscapes.co.uk/Blog/2012-06-03-Jubilee/23375035_wH4xvs
The reason for taking them - the primary school are using them in their project - YAY!

It's always best to reformat the card everytime
you put it back in the camera. Did you delete the images when the card was connected to the iPad? That can cause problems

Si, this has happened to me on more than one occasion. What I've been doing since is lock the card for writing before slipping it into something else.

I received my packaging to return the camera for sensor replacement today, I'm still not sure if I should send it in right away, or wait for some feedback regarding the performance of the new sensor

I just sent mine in today. I don't think fuji would release a new sensor that wasn't better than the old one. It would harm their business if they didn't get this right, but time will tell.
I will know next week!

Really looking forward to your first impressions.
I'm waiting to see what happens....

sent mine off today as well

How am I going to get a picture of the Queen, if you guys sent all your X10 back to Fuji?
