The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Rob, Allan - thanks

And now for a challenge....
Here's an image I took last weekend.
I like it, but have no idea why. Compositionally, there's nothing obvious making it work.
But it could be that I'm on my own here. Does it do anything for any of you lot?
Love to hear your thoughts as it is leaving me rather confused.
Straight out the camera.....

On the technical front....
The X10 has got the exposure bang on in P mode.
There's just enough shadow and highlight detail retained that I haven't needed to resort to RAW and LR4 to recover the image.

To me it's interesting because of the contrasting idea: an almost organic subject, digits, bones-like, hands, cast in rock. Well spotted (and captured)!

Here's one that I like from yesterday when I had a little more time to play with the camera.
Also, downloaded the trial of Silver efex pro, so had a dabble there too.

How cute's that!
Full marks to both the photographer and the kit

Thanks, So far im very pleased with this little camera and think I made the right choice getting rid of my D90.

Im having to think more about the image I want to capture now and how its framed which is a good thing i think

Absolutely gorgeous daughter & great capture but not sure about the dodgy geezer, with her, in your previous post ;)

Took these a couple of days ago and have been tearing my hair out every since trying to edit them - well, apart from the black and white one but I'm sure you all know by now how much easier I find black and white editing than colour. They were all done from RAW files. Please tell me what you think of my 'developing' of the files and whether I've overdone it etc.

Well I kind of killed the thread with my last post, maybe I can resurrect it with this one :D

As you can see I have finally gotten round to taking some long exposures. I used the variable ND filter I have to let me get the 30" exposure while keeping a good balance of my aperture to try and keep everything in focus. It was a pretty stormy night so the ships in the background moved around a bit so they're a little more fuzzy than I'd like and its a shame about the orbs on the restaurant shot but it just makes me think I will probably go for this new sensor.

As always comments are welcome :)
Cheers!

Hi Asa

There must be many like me who do look at every single post in this thread, including yours, but who don't say much very often. So please keep up your posts and show us your photos. I feel rather reluctant to comment as I sure am no expert :D Having said that my edit was chosen in the PP thread yesterday : -

So keep posting

Asa,
Doesn't mean anything. It happens....
Looking back in this thread, plenty of my image posts have gone unacknowledged too!

I love the car light trail shot.
Never noticed the orb till I read your words.

I read every single post in this thread but I don't get the time to reply as often as I'd like... In many ways, the fact that this thread is still going strong is a testament to how popular this camera is :)

I have been a lurker on this thread for a while now...
I love the quality I see produced with this little camera, however I am very put off by the "Orb" situation.
There seems to be a lottery about getting one with them or not, And I could not put up with the hassle of sending a camera back.

I wonder when they will start supplying "Orb" free cameras from stock... and how could you tell before handing over the cash ????

Terry, orbs arise from any X 10 camera, they are all capable of doing it and the orbs seem to be a trade off for having extremely good dynamic range. The orbs only seem to arise in certain conditions, such as when shooting night scenes at low ISO's and with long shutter speeds, or when shooting highly reflective items in bright sunshine. I've not had any orbs, as I don't shoot much in those conditions. In any case, if you do suffer from orbs (and few people here seem to) Fuji have a sensor replacement scheme which doesn't involve much hassle, you simply phone them and register your camera and they send you a prepaid carton.

I highly doubt there will be orb free x 10 stock since as you say it would be extremely difficult to differentiate the old sensors from cameras with new ones. It makes more sense for the current supply to continue until it's exhausted (with the sensor exchange program available for customers who require it) at which point a new model would be available in the shops with a different name.

I went to a seminar in Southampton earlier this week and of course I took my X10. I used it extensively, it really is a lovely camera for portraits. I didn't get the 5D MkIII out of the bag much, there didn't seem to be much need for a lot of the work I was doing (I can't believe I just said that). When I got home, I laid the pictures out and asked my assistant if he could tell me which ones had been taken with each camera, and he failed miserably. The shots from both cameras can be seen here: http://lindsaydobsonphotography.com/blog/?p=6540

Do you know if the replaced sensors are as good in other respects?
Is the colour filter arrangement the same on the new sensor? In fact do we know anything about them at all ???? Or their problems?

Love your shots with it.....

Yup, there's a link a few pages back TP a DPR review of the new sensor.

So far, I've only seen one comparison shot with the new and old sensor.
It's over on dpreview and was discussed a while back in this thread.
Bottom line was that the new sensor looks VERY promising.
It's a good start, but we still need more information.....

P.S. we all love Lindsay's images :D

Terry, aside from the link earlier in this thread I'm afraid there isn't much information currently available regarding the new sensor, we'll have to wait until some make their way into circulation, or are reviewed by the main reviewing sites. I personally will be interested to see if the new sensor has the same dynamic range as the current one, since that is one of the key attributes which makes the X10 so good. If you think that you will be regularly shooting in the conditions I mentioned above, then you might want to wait until more information is available about the new sensor. But if you don't then there is nothing to stop you getting an X10 - as you can see from this thread there are many delighted owners. As I mentioned, I haven't encountered any orbs and I am really pleased with the camera, I use it almost constantly.

Pretty happy with this little cam so far.
Only little niggle is focus but it may be that its more user error rather than the camera.

I have the camera set to AF-C with face detection on which seems to work ok but also seems to hunt quite a lot in what I wouldnt class as low light just indoor light.

Any tips or settings to change to help speed up AF?

I think these are fantastic, especially the last 2..

Daz - quality panoramas. Remind me of my Wales ones! Must be something about the landscape in Wales :-)

HELP!!! Is anyone willing to sell me their heavystar 52mm adapter? I've been waiting for mine since the 25th April and its still not arrived. I go on holiday in one week and don't hold out much hope of it turning up. If no one has one to sell could I hire it for a price for two weeks?

It must be in transit somewhere Martyn.

A friend of mine ordered his last week and it arrived yesterday. I'd email them and ask for a replacement to be sent.

Oh my word.....
Was that really taken with an X10?

One of the most impressive portraits I've seen in a very long time.

Thanks Duncan! :D

It was definitely taken with the X10! ;)

Brilliant shot Si! I find the X10 is great for portraits, lovely to see it being used in this way.

Thanks Lindsay :)

The images I got from the X10 showed a much more relaxed model... It was Kayleigh's first time in front of the camera (properly) and I think she found it much less intimidating than having the 5DMKII pointed at her!
