The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

No idea why I don't seem to suffer, but you are - that's an interesting question I'd quite like to know the answer to.....

Yeah id like to as well, it might have something to do with the amount of light coming in the back being balanced by the amount coming in the front. Ive only seen this effect indoors tbh as i never bothered with the adaptor once i saw it, maybe its less obvious outdoors. heres an example....

Thats with the lens at 28mm with the infra red filter on the front. Zoom the lens out to 70mm and the ring moves far enough out not to be seen. Ill have to try a few outdoors shots and see if theres any difference.

Hi Rob,

I notice these are 100 IS0. How did you manage that with DR400, did you use M size? I didn't think it was possible with L?

Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Indeed, I've settled for M. I don't have any hard evidence, but the X10's sensor strikes me as a 6 mp sensor, capable of 12 mp. Furthermore, 6mp is more than enough for my purposes. I've tried both 6 and 12 mp, but couldn't really tell the difference (I'm positive that's just my eyes ;-) ). I shy away from anything else but P, A, and S, as my/the X10 has a tendency to overexpose.

I'll post some more in the next few days/weeks (need to leave work earlier and get out more...)

Blimey - that's not subtle!
I reckon that's enough information for me to repeat your test.

On my Elan Valley trip I only removed the IR filter once auto focus stopped working even on areas of high contrast. So I don't think it is just low light levels.

It's possible there is a difference in filter coatings. My IR filter is a Hoya R72.
Have you seen the problem with any other filters?
I've got a 3 stop ND, but confess I haven't used it yet!
I presume you don't have a lens protector fitted at the same time?

I've got a feeling we may end up posting close up shots of our adapters fitted to the camera.

I was using the Cokin 89b infra red filter. I've an assortment of nd's kicking about so will try them too and ive got the "thick" cokin holder and the thin one as well (one holds 3 the thin holds 2). If all yours are the round screw on ones rather than my square slot in's that may have something to do with it.

Its not an unsolvable problem, i can just stick some black masking tape inside and out to cover the holes, but there must be a solution as you dont see it :)

Ah - that might be it.
Mine is a screw on filter.

Perhaps the distance between the adapter and filter is significant.
I'll try hand holding a filter at different distances and see if I get the white circle.

If this is the problem, then I think I may have just been put off the idea of getting a Lee Filter adapter ring allowing me to use my grads with the X10.
I'll have a play and report back.

One thing the holes are good for is gripping the adapter unscrewing a reluctant hood and filter. I had a big problem on a cold day when the hood shrunk jamming onto the adapter in the cold air, The adapter also appeared to be jammed onto the filter but it's hard to grip with the hood on. Brute force didn't work. Solution was to cup the hood in my hands for a few mins to warm it up - then the hood and filter unscrewed....

oh its the filter holder, it holds the filters too far from the lens. If i just hold the filter against the adaptor on its own without slipping it into the holder everything is fine. So cokin holders = the suck, Hoya filters = fine :)

Thanks for the info. Will have a good play and see what I prefer.

Steve

Sorry, Steve, forgot to make it clear that the overexposing part happens in EXR mode, not every single shot, but more often than I'd like. Strangely enough, in Auto mode (the camera icon mode on the top dial) the overexposure is seldom. In P or A mode, I haven't had any grieving exposure mishaps.

I got the Apex60 also (thanks to your recommendations), there's an hidden pocket inside on each side with the opening toward the bottom of the pouch.
You can fit easily 2 batteries (stacked one on top of the other) on each side. I usually store 2 batteries on the right side and one on the left. I keep my spare SD card in the front compartment.

Fab! Thanks Marc. I actually lost a spare battery because I'd slipped it in the front compartment (not the velcro-secured one)... :annoyed: Now I know better. Ta again!

Anyone else finding the RAW files 'flat'? The camera's preview shows whatever film simulation the camera is set to, but this is discarded in Lightroom.

Admittedly a dull day, but...

I seem to have to do more to the X10 files than those from my Nikons.:'(

That's a horrifically contrasty scene and your PP shows just how well the X10 managed to keep both highlight and shadow detail.
I'm afraid that before we can draw conclusions you are going to need to take side by side shots and compare the two RAWs.

You've taken RAW to get hold of this image texture knowing it would need work in PP, but I suspect the out-of-camera JPEGs would have used DR 400 which would have looked much more vibrant.

I don't know if anyone else knows that the Canon OC-E3 flash cord works with the Fujifilm camera and flash combination. Thanks to the folk at X100forum for discovering this. I bought a cheapy YongNuo copy and it works pefectly with the X10 and EF20.

Jonathan,

I am considering the EF-20 flash for its compact size over the EF-40, do you find it is functional enough?

I wanted a small flash that I could carry without really noticing it and which didn't look silly on top of the camera. The EF-20 does this and works well with the X10. I suppose it's really the equivalent of the SB-400 - a more powerful replacement for the on-board flash. If I want full flash performance I'll grab a Nikon DSLR and SB-900.

I know what you mean, I placed my Nikon one on the camera last night to see how it looked and felt........Made the camera very unbalanced in the hand and looked OTT :gag:

I ended up ordering one on the basis it would be better than the inbuilt one and the EF-40 would be to large. I just hope it has enough oomphh so at least I could bounce it from a wall or ceiling.

Well now Ive spent a bit of time familiarising myself with the controls and customising the menus I better get out there and take some photos.

Well one X10 delivered today and wow.

Might even get out and take some pics this weekend.

Thanks for the info guys - esp Duncan. I will be back no doubt:)

Here's a shot of Cadair Idris in Wales, whilst me and my other half are patiently waiting for some jets :D

That's nice Kev! :) I need to head back up there soon but it'll have to wait until I've got some more annual leave to play with. I've just bought myself a 300mm F4L so I'm itching to get back up there!

I'm sure I met you & your OH up on CadWest a few months ago...

I am really loving not only the style but also the functionality of this camera.

I have ordered a few add ons, such as the hood kit, filter kit and spare battery. I already have the leather stick on lens holder, that was useful today. It does work in conjunction with the Fuji case but the case is frustrating in it's self, as you have to take the camera out every time you want to download images, change battery or use the tripod mount. It's a shame they did not deign it with an access panel in the base.

A few recent photos.

I use an 8GB EyeFi Pro 2 SD card, saves me taking the card out when I want the images.

Love those baby pics. Show's just what the camera can do. What leather case is that?

I'm starting to think that this camera is a myth!

No camera shop ever has any on the shelves!!

Its the bottom half of the official Fuji case with the gariz leather lens cover. I leave the upper half off from the Fuji case when the camera is in use, as it gets in the way.

I haven't had much chance to get out with the X10 lately but I took it with me yesterday to Strumble Head in Pembrokeshire...

Unfortunately, the colours seem to have been sucked out for some reason!

I thought I was going to have the same problem BUT I am lucky enough to live not far from Brixham where Mifsuds had one. So able to try holding one alongside Canon G12, Nikon P7000 and Panasonic LX5. It felt good - far better than I was expecting!!!!!!

So back to watching the price hoping they may drop, or Fuji may have a cashback but not sure if Fuji ever do these?

:amstupid: I was wrong. :bonk:

Anyroad. I'm liking what this little camera can do. It's almost* perfect for my go-anywhere needs.

I like the subtle tones in these two.

Been watching this thread for a while and I have finally taken the plunge and ordered a refurbished one from the Fujishop for £337.99.

Do we know how long the code will work on the refurb units? Ideally I would like to wait until payday to buy it.

Temptingly low price but I can't get my head round having a refurbished one? They don't give too much information on the web site other than the cameras are returns from retailers. But why would retailers return them unless they are faulty?

At a guess I would say the current code would work until end of Feb but would not bank on it being any longer.

The Fuji site says that any fault would be rectified and you get a years warranty, so it is the same as a new one, except the risk it may have a "mark" on it.

I wonder how many are returns because of the "Orb" issue?.

Must admit that occurred to me too.
They won't be getting mine back :)

Orbs were in my mind last weekend.
I was shooting an indoor festival and was deciding what kit strategy to use.
My solution relied on the X10 producing ALL the wide shots.
- 70-200 f4 IS on a 60D (shot 1314 images)
- 50mm f1.4 on a 5DII (shot 408 images)
- X10 (shot 306 images)
The long lens was used mostly for performers, which for an indoor festival represents the best photo opportunities.
It turned out the f1.4 on the 5DII was a good move as it was often so dark that I was getting unacceptable motion blur even at f1.4 and ISO 800 :|

I haven't processed my images yet; but the X10 images look pretty good.
Panorama mode was REALLY useful; got shots no one else was able to take.
I'll share some piccies later.

Only niggle I found was shooting in manual exposure, the screen does not provide any form of exposure simulation. So winding the shutter speed from slowest to fastest makes no difference to what appears on the screen. I know the meter on the left works OK, but the whole point of using manual was that the performers were over exposing even with -2ev compensation and I wanted to set the exposure for the performers. I ended up taking shots and chimping until the exposure looked right, which is a horrible way to set exposure. :bang:

Does anyone know how to turn on exposure simulation in manual exposure?

Please do

but quite often peace of mind is best anyway. It would be nice for the screen to give a live view image though.

Mines a refurb and it looks as new, came in a new box with everything new and sealed in the box, 12 month warranty and it works as it should, even had the firmware upgrade on....Bargain in my eyes.

Interesting to see that people here are getting good results and are positive about the camera. The Fuji forum at dpreview is ridiculous with all the orb obsession.

I don't know what this problem with 'orbs' is all about... It seems to me to be an attempt to make something out of nothing!
