Yes, serial numbers start with the digit that indicates the year of manufacture. (The second digit indicates which quarter of the year)
Mine is 5 so they are definately still making them (or were until very recently)

I use the original OEM grip on mine, the one you have to take off to get to the battery/card
I really like it, it makes it easier to grip the body, and for me at least, makes the thumb sit more comfortably on the back.
Of course we all have different hands, and different ways of holding the camera... Also, I managed to break the knuckle/little finger of my right hand in 3 places falling off a motorbike (many, many yrs ago) and it doesn't have a great of strength and limited movement (tmi?) so FOR ME I'm always glad of some extra grip in a camera body... Obv, YMMV and your hand probably works properly!
