The Official Fuji X Pro 1 Thread

Ian's admitted on the linked thread, he meant 8GB, not 16.
Price is similar to what I paid Picstop for the same card just before Christmas.

Yep my bad... I got confused.. (seems to happen easily these days ;) ) still a good price though especially delivered.

Steve that link just takes me to the FB mobile site.. maybe stick a post up in portraits and post a few there or even here?

Great images Steve, especially like the very first one and the B&W with trees as a frame....

Well my bank cancelled my Fuji order because of a security check! Will need to reorder!

Not santander by any chance chris? I've had them do that to me twice now :bang:

Think I've got the right link now! Left my laptop at work so doing it from phone https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151505488138385.546903.22932223384&type=3&l=bc2daa6ff0
I've added a retro white balance to suit the quirky vintage style couple

Lovely work Steve, I think your style of shooting on the day was very sympathetic to their own personal style.

The main thing to remember is they are different beasts, the fuji is a pro camera with amazing iQ, to better it you need to be thinking full frame pro DSLR, consumer level DSLR's just cant touch it in that respect.

I sold off my Canon 500D & fast lenses to buy mine, I have no regrets at all.

I've seen comparison between the D7000 and XPro1 which seems to suggest they are quite close but I agree I'd think the Xp1 probably edges it out.

Realistically though I think I'd want the 35mm and 14mm and that's a pricey combo when I price it up v a D7000.....

I'd love to try an XPro 1 but so far I haven't even come close to finding one in the shops. Spotted an X100 in Jessops in Newcastle some time ago but gave up and left after being unable to get served.

I'd certainly want to check out AF and MF focus performance, EVF use in low light and any post capture processing issues.

Managed to find a Nex 6 at Sony shop in Newcastle, staff had no idea how it worked and only had the (IMVHO) awful to use power zoom kit lens.

Not being able to find higher end CSC and lenses in shops seems to be a major stumbling block for me and without trying one I don't feel confident buying blind.

You could visit Focus on Imaging for the possibility of testing out as many different cameras as you like, or try to find someone local to you to let you take some shots on your own card - that's what I did recently when someone I know wanted to try an X-Pro, and I also got to try his OMD.
(For anyone interested, I'm keeping the X-Pro, he hasn't decided.)

Hi david357

I'm currently toying with the idea of an X-pro or an EX-1 or an OMD (or one of a few others) for when I just cannot be hassled carting a DSLR around.

So, I have read a lot of online stuff recently and compared images but that is never as good as getting use reviews.

OOI, could you please advise what made you prefer the X-pro over the OMD ?

Your input would be really appreciated.

Regards

Gary

I previously owned am XPro1 with the 35mm and was very pleased buy found the AF lacking and swapped for an OMD which I then also sold.

I did have the Xp1 very early on and I'd imagine the AF has been much improved with the various firmware upgrades since then, I guess I could order from the Fuji store and return if I'm not happy as I'd like to try it again and while it is dearer than the D7000 its size makes it more likely I'd use it more.

Hi Gary,
I bought the X-Pro for exactly the same reason - I have (and would not part with) a D800 and fast lenses that produce amazing quality, but I do a lot of walking, a fair bit in the mountains. I found that even when I carried the nikon around, it was often too much trouble to pull it out of the bag to take shots.

Now the Fuji goes almost everywhere and gets used a lot, and the camera with 35mm, 60mm and 18-55 zoom fit in a small bag, or even camera round my neck and lenses in my pockets!

I tried a Sony Nex 7 before that, and though the pictures were excellent, it never felt like a camera to me - the Fuji feels like a proper camera to someone who has had lots of birthdays

The OMD also produced great images, but had a fiddly menu system and was a bit too small for me; it was better with both grips attached, but wasn't for me. I do have the Fuji grip attached to mine, and it definitely feels better for it.

Hope that helps, if you were local you could gladly try my Fuji. As to references to the Sony and Nex above, they are purely MY observations, everyone else will be different, I'm sure.

david.

Distance Selling Regulations gives you a 7 day buffer in such instances.
At least then you can really put it through its paces than if stood in a shop, where the most you might get to venture with it, is just outside the front doors, with a staff member beside you.

Hi Chris/David

Many thanks for the advice. I'm currently sitting on 5D3, 7D and 60D bodies with lenses from the 15mm fisheye up to the 500f4ISL and which I (mostly) adore.

On a number of ocassions though I have had the "can't be bothered to get the DSLR out of the Kata packpack" situation as described by Dave and have missed a lot of shots as a result.

I recently purchased an x10 for my daughter here off TP and have been really impressed, hence my interest in the X-pro. Panamoz has some great deals on this body as has the Fuji refurb shop plus there is one for sale here on TP. My biggest dilemma though is whether I want to buy into another system.

OOI, is the zoom any good ? I think I would look at this first of all for pure versatility.

Thanks again for the advice from both.

Gary

I'm thinking similarly in the a smaller body /lenses would be more likely to be taken outwith me although the XPro1 isn't all the small itself particularly as the lenses are quite meaty.... It's still a lot smaller and lighter than a DSLR though! I'm certainly very tempted although I could probably buy a D7000 and have change left over for an X100 if I fancied!

I sold a D7000 to fund the Fuji, and am well impressed and have no regrets. I initially had the three fuji primes, but as I am not a big user of the wider angles, I p/ex'd the 18mm for the zoom.

I find the zoom to be excellent, and way better quality than any standard kit zoom that I have seen previously. I still carry the primes with me though, it is usually the amazing 35mm that sits on the camera, and the 60mm is just wonderful. The zoom is brilliant when I need another focal length and can't zoom with my feet, it is just not as fast as the primes. I think you may be surprised at just how good the quality is of images produced by the fuji zoom.

I definitely take more pictures now as this is so small and convenient. ........and it feels like a proper camera.

I'm definitely getting convinced I need one of these fellows !

Not sure how to break it to the Mrs that I need a sixth body though.

Also, finally, are Fuji refurbs ok ?

Thanks again for the help.

The firmware upgrades (v2.0 upwards) improved the X-Pro 1's autofocus, but it's still not as quick as a DSLR with a phase detection based system by any means especially in low light. That's my view in comparison with my Nikons.

I have to agree there, Will, but it hasn't caused me problems at all. For most of my photography I tend to use a tripod anyway, which is why I have not experienced the issues with needing more care with the D800, but if I need quicker focusing then I use a dslr. Horses for courses!

Having said that, the Fuji is definitely not as slow as some people would have you think, but then again a lot of those people are just regurgitating and embellishing what they have read on forums, as opposed to speaking from experience of actually using the cameras.

Managed to get a play with an X Pro tonight in John Lewis I suspect not on a latest firmware version but it was actually snappier than I remember.

Feels very good with the add on grip and also managed to compare side by side with the D7000

Not actually all that much smaller but it's soo much lighter and the lenses are also smaller once you removed the hood.... Very tempted now to be honest as I can't see me buying the D7000 and taking it with me as much as the X Pro

Between the marketing, the hype and downright detractors, it's understandably difficult to get a consensus of opinion about the AF performance.

When it comes to trying focus on a toddler who won't stay still under average indoor lighting (think f/1.4, 1/125s at ISO 2500 with 4 60-Watt equivalent energy saving wall-mounted bulbs in a 4m square, cream-walled room) then it's hit & miss in my experience. Under the same conditions, I'll know it's time to equip myself with my D700 if I want to maximise my chances.

Of course, there are many other situations in which AF will be perfectly fine and that's why I think it's important for a potential buyer to consider what sort of conditions they'll mostly be shooting under and trying the camera under the same conditions, where possible, before buying.

I think I read somewhere that the 55-200 is due about June/July.

Also, finally, are Fuji refurbs ok ?

Thanks again for the help.

I've had two, an X10 and now the Xpro, no issues with either apart from a missing lens cap with the 60mm but fuji shop replaced that straight away.

Hi,
Does anyone know when the 55-200mm is being released?

The last I read on the fuji x forums they were saying april/may, I hope its sooner rather than later.

Really that long :( anyone else using the adaptor and and longer lens? Also thanks for the info

Just got an old nikkor 300mm F4.5 EDIF and adaptor, had a little play today, seems to meter ok in both manual and aperture priority, it will be nice though when someone comes up with an AF confirm adaptor.
One handy thing is you can still move the AF point about, this allows you to choose the area to magnify quickly, focus and then take the shot.
Its handy with wildlife were you want to focus the eyes but dont want to move the lens as you have the composition how you want it.

It also taught me that my MF skills and eyesight aren't what they where:lol:

Just tell people it's artistic blur/soft focus.

whats the difference between the xpro1 and the xe-1? Are the lens mounts compatible? Apart from a smaller body i cant see much between them. I was just looking at the refurb store and noticed they have an xe-1 but no pro-1 and im tempted to splurge.

The optical viewfinder on the x-pro1, mainly, and it is worth extra if you can get on with it.

Has anyone tried an adapter for 3rd party lenses? I have Nikon lenses and it would be interesting to hear from others if they have.

Thanks

The XE-1 also differs from the X-Pro 1 in that it has more plastic in its construction, improved EVF, lower resolution rear LCD and a built-in flash.

I've got a Leica M mount adapter. Not much to say except that it works!

I have a Pentax adapter for £22 with the 50mm 1.7 and the results are great!

Looks very good Steve..

I had a quick go with a nikkor 300mm today, terrible light.. well no light really, very overcast and not much about but quickly grabbed a couple of collared doves on the feeder outside.. shot through the double glazing.

I'd forgotten how hard it is to manual focus a long lens, especially without a split prism finder!

Just levels and contrast boosted, otherwise jpg straight out of the camera. (no cropping at all)
