The official (Bah Humbug) Olympics thread

personalkly i think the paralympics should run as part of the actual olympics so that the crowds see both and it gets more media coverage

I think they make spin it out for at least another couple of weeks, with all didnt we do well, medal winner returning to their hometown etc, before they shove that big old bill under are noses :gag::nuts:

Did you know that since 2004 , the annual paying visitors to the 75 years Berlin Olympic stadium has been 300,000 at €7 a go, and then there is the extra for an audio or guided tour.

So plenty of time for London to get so of that well spent money back.

wasnt there a rumour the stadium was going to be sold off to west ham?

originally yes - along with Newham council, but various other teams got in the way of that. The stadium will now be leased to one or more of the applicants, of which West Ham is one.

Oh goody! At that rate the £9.5bn that they've admitted to the Olympics costing would only take 4500 years to recover. Spiffing good value eh? :suspect:

£9500 bn? That's £9.5 trillion, or £9,500,000,000,000.

^^^ Yes, I was working it out as 9500 million and then didn't change it straight away!
:) well spotted sir!

The news at lunchtime spent nearly half the programme about the Olympics, when oh when will life get back to normal?

The point was I guess that money can come in over a long time, when the world athletic champs are here in 2017, are you going to count the income from that as olympic money or not ?

There are far to many people looking for a very short term return (inc the government) we have to think long term and the benefits the facilities could bring by having the stadiums to hold world class sports.

we already had a stadium to hold world class sports - the commonwealth stadium in manchester - plus we already had an international rowing course at holme pierrepont, notts.

However the real problem isnt with providing the facilities - its with it costing £9.5 Billion to do it - havent these people heard of project management ? But instead of being savvy and holding the budget tightly and negotiating effectively- they've been taken for a ride by every contractor and consultant south of hadrians wall.

That Logo - looks like it was drawn by a 5 year old - a quarter of a million quid - could have been done for a couple of thou - or done away witrh entirely as a strong brand already exists in the shape of the rings

Mandy and Turville (the mascots) another quarter of a mill down the drain - for a couple of mutated teletubbies

and so on and so forth - and lets not even get onto the 'cultrual olympiad'

What you don't think they did a good job putting the whole games on for £9.5bn, when the FA spent £800K one ONE stadium  which didn't even include buying the land to built it on, now that is an over priced white elephant.

Both of them arsed up big time - I manage budgets in my job and my boss would go spare if I went nearly twice over projected budget through not controlling costs

so no i think they did a 'king appaling job - they could hasve delivered it for less than half if they'd had halfway competent project managers in charge , instead of drooling ****wit civil servants

Just wait a couple of months until all the hooh hah and flim flam (PR spin and downright bull*s*?t) has abated and we start getting the real cost figures released. Then tell me it's a good job.

I'm genuinely glad that as a country we did reasonably well. And also that it has without doubt raised the general morale of the people. But for anyone at all that takes the time to seriously consider the real costs involved and whether or not we got value for money then it's just nonsensical.

 I'd like to see a breakdown of the 9.5 bn as i bet a lot was skimmed off into unecessary fripperies. FOI request anyone ?

Sorry but that stadium has not been able to hold world class sports for 10 years, as right from the initial planing stage it was designed to be converted into a football stadium immediately after the commonwealth games.

What also has to be taken into account is the money foreign teams spend here in the UK because of the olympics, as I understand it the refurbishment of the athletic stadium in Birmingham was paid or part paid for by the USA team to the tune of £5 million.

Eton Dorney was not build for the games, the collage built it and paid for themselves and have hired it to the games , so we still only have HP as a national rowing/canoe sprint venue.

No they didnt - the college had a huge injection of public cash from the brown govt (the initial lake was built by eton college with private money , govt quango sport england then injected most of the 500k for the finish tower (with the balance coming via seeda) and the infracstructure arround the lake necessary to make it international class including new access roads, and internal bridge, and a link between the lake and the return lane were funded in 2009 by the olympic development authority), and was a massive cock up - not least because they decided not to put a bridge in over the thames from the parking at windsor race course, the idea being that the army would rig a pontoon - however that all got kicked into touch due to the river being in spate meaning that come the games there was totally insufficient parking on the eton dorney side

as right from the initial planing stage it was designed to be converted into a football stadium immediately after the commonwealth games.
.

Not unlike the plans for the olympic stadium then

and as to the money spent by foreign teams thats all well and good, but against the income of a few million the uk govt has blown 9.5 billion - thats not exactly a profit and loss to shout about

No for the Olympic stadium the plan was always to keep the running track, Manchester always planed to remove the track.

But lets be honest if it had cost absolute nothing, that would be to much for some.

So are we now officially done with the Olympics  :runaway: :woot:
It started to feel like ground hog day but at least Xmas will be next to be rammed down our throats :bang:

Yep the are still banging on about it on the radio,
but I guess its time to remove the super-glue and let this thread slide into oblivion now.

Talking of Xmas, I was eating at a chef and brewer last week, "up north"
And there was a little display in the corner, Xmas tree complete with "presents"
and leaflets "inviting me" to book my Xmas dinner :bang:
I guess an Xmas "bah Humbug" thread is next ;)
