The official (Bah Humbug) Olympics thread

Name the 2008 Beijing female heptathlon winner without googling it. Even name what country she came from. You can't can you? That's my point. It's an event where the competitors couldn't get close to the throwing world records if they shot the javelin out a bazooka or beat the middle distance running records if they were on roller skates. The hurdles is closer, but even then the heptathlon couldn't be described as a blue ribbon event.

Jessica Ennis being lovely and attractive and marketable is her main asset, not the heptathlon glory.

the 2008 heptathalon winner was either russian or ukranian - I can't remember her name off the top of my head , natalya something or other

but really so what - I couldnt tell you all the names of the team GB football team either , or even who won most of the atheletics in 2008 - I remember usaine bolt because he was so remarkable fast - just like people rember roger banister.

one last note steve's gold medals of course werent solo because he generally raced with mathew pinscent in a pair - or with pinscent and the searles in a four - but really so what ?

Like winning medals being part of the 4 x 100m relay team and doing nothing in the 100m final. It lacks the gravitas of the true greats.

Trolling seems to be a catch all term for labelling those who disagree with your opinion.

not at all

a troll is someone who continually posts provocative comments aimed at starting, inflaming, or continuing an argument.

many people can disagree ammicably without doing any of those things - but when someone jumps from one argument about elitism to trying to start another one about jessica enniss it does begin to look like an accurate description.

It lacks the gravitas of the true greats.

yawn

you are entitled to your opinion - but its not one many will share - i'm not going to waste time debating it

too much pointless mass debating makes you go blind

As I stated earlier I represented Great Britain in canoeing back in the late 70s, and now a little family history.

My dad started work at 14 in the cotton mill, he left to become a door to door salesman for Betterware, and then on to work as a centre lathe tuner in a factory.

At the age of 11 my mum died, leaving dad alone to bring up 2 young boys. My brother and I both went to the local primary school, were my brother passed his 11 plus so he could go to grammar school and then on to uni for a maths degree (did a sandwich course work for a company during none term time )

I went to the local secondary modern school, but we both join the scout. It was here that I was introduced to canoeing, at first I just use the scouts equipment, but later we made a home made canoe just for me.

After years of hard work by me and sacrifices by my dad (no holidays, no pub, no smoking) I was luckily selected to represent our country.

Could somebody please tell me at what point I had an elitist upbringing, cause I can't remember it.

To say you only get to the top with money is very insulting to me and the many many working class people who have put the effort in to make something of themsevles. What I did not do is sit at home, thinking everyone else has it better and easier than I do, I got off my backside and did something.

Indeed. I think the word 'troll' comes to mind

Trolling seems to be a catch all term for labelling those who disagree with your opinion.

No, in this instance it's not being applied to as a catch all term for those that disagree with you. This thread was intended as a light hearted debate but you appear to posting only to disrupt, be purposefully provocative and to bait others which in my book = troll.

Wind it in please.

I smell a googling, no matter though as if you did you'd prove my point. It's an event that doesn't exactly capture the imagination if you haven't got a nice trim home hero in it. That's face of the games material, not a burly bronze medalist judoka like Karina Bryant who had to crawl in the boot of her knackered car to get to events.

With all these unpleasantries subsiding I can finally focus my attention on the other irksome factors of these games. Jessica Ennis winning the gold medal in the heptathlon
(one of the lesser medals) and being the face of the games seems more to do with her ability to become photogenic than being a jack of all trades and master of none. Sir Steve Redgrave's 5 gold medals seem to be mentioned ad nauseum as well, did he ever win a solo Olympic gold?

Proof indeed that you are a troll plain and simple. Only a troll (or someone so stupid its surprising they are still alive) would say something like that. So Daley Thompson was a jack of all trades then? I dont think i have seen anything so stupid in all my life.

Ok, without Googling name the 2008 Judo winners?

Right, thats me leaving this thread now before I probably say things that will get me banned!!! Shame 1 person has to spoil it!

Enough. Your disrespect for individuals who have put years of effort into their chosen path is bang out of order, regardless of whether or not they've been privileged.

You just come across as jealous and bitter so take some time out to consider whether or not you still want to come here. We'll do the same.

That one person has now got more time on his hands to watch the Olympics so you might as well stick around. :)

if ban hammer was an olympic event i'd give you guys a joint gold

That's another reason I'm no fan of the Olympics though. If this thread hadn't existed I'd have had more time to look around the photography threads :bang: ;)

Her 110 hurdles time matched the gold medal time from the individual event at the last Olympics.

As for calling it a lesser medal.. Well, you've just proven to me that your opinions on sport are so flawed & offensive as to not even be worth discussing so I shall say no more. ;)

Her 100m hurdles time (women's is 100) would have won all bar 3 gold medals in that event! So pretty much master of that one. Shame she didn't choose to do the event, she is listed for it.

Well my self imposed OOF ban lasted not very long at all

Going to have to break a rule I'm afraid and say "Very well done that man" been a long time coming but have say your build up was solid, your action smooth and your aim was spot on a perfect 10.0 scored in the Ban Hammer Olympiad

Summary of the thread so far:

Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mind-bogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the NON-existence of God.
The argument goes like this:
`I refuse to prove that I exist,' says God, `for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.'
`But,' says Man, `The Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED.'
`Oh dear,' says God, `I hadn't thought of that,' and promptly disappears in a puff of logic.
`Oh, that was easy,' says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.

That just about sums the last few pages up... You looking for an argument? !! :suspect:

Can we get back to being just ordinarily grumpy now? I kind of miss it...

Haven't read the last few pages prob don't want to but just want to change the subject and say I may be changing my mind about the Olympics being a waste of money are very impressed so far in how well the brits are doing :)

We're actually doing very well, and that's brilliant. But it's so easy to be taken over by Olympics euphoria (which is exactly what the Government wants) and lose track of everything else that's happening in the country.

Mass unemployment, dodgy banks, no growth whatsoever, a broken coalition, and lots lots more that they'd rather you didn't concentate on... Much better that you just go oooh and aahhh at the next gold medal?

Yes but all that will still be there and back to being front page news next week! It's just nice having positive headlines for a change.
I'm not naiive enough to think the bad things aren't happening, but surely everyone else feels like its brought a bit of unity and feel good spirit to the country.

Having been up to Stratford before and during the Olympics, the atmosphere was infinitely better soley due to the games. Before the Olympics it was just a nice shopping centre in an inconvenient location.

Nice to see I lot of people going from the anti Olympic camp into the "it's not that bad (but secretly I do now love it but don't want to admit it)" camp. Until a couple of months ago I hated the idea of the games too!

I'm not totally "anti" Adam. And in a way I agree it is rather nice to see something other than the gloom, doom and despondency reported in the news.

Unfortunately I can't dismiss the fact that so often these things are used to cover up or at the very least used to take the emphasis off the really bad things that are effecting us. They'll be with us long after the Olympics are forgotten.

I'm so uninterested in the olympics I can't even be bothered to post in this thread to complain about them :)

Well I see a few FACTS are now coming out about our super bikes.

They have been on sale for over 2 years, yet not one single enquiry from another nation.
The wheels are same as the french use and supplied by French company Mavic .

Yes the games do distract use from the doom and gloom of the recent past, and a good thing too if you ask me, hopefully with GB doing so well a can do attitude will disperse in to more of society.

Instead of people just blaming the banks, the government and anybody else they can think of, they'll start to think I can do it. Be that in sport, in work, in companies try to sell abroad. Let have more of a USA attitude of we can we deserve and not the downer of everything british.

Blimey! You're hopeful mate.

They unfortunately have not distracted me.

It is entirely possible to enjoy the games and read political and economic reporting. I'm managing it, anyway.

Just having my lunch, the missus is watching some swimming thing ( swimming in turpentine or some such ), think I'll paint something and watch it dry, they need a couple of crocodiles in there to liven things up.

That would be good, watch that :D

Don't worry, Paralympics will be here soon. :p

And remember folks, the 1995 Disability Discimination Act and 2010 Equality Act means you have to post another 16 pages of Forum Thread, pooh poohing that too!! :naughty:

I presume the Tele will be giving it an equal ammount of coverage then :suspect:
