the new retro fujifilm x100

I've been thinking about gettting a a compact camera, this would fit the bill quite nicely. Love the look and the lens sounds great. Be nice to read some reviews soon.

It's a lovely looking thing that conjures up all sorts of romantic notions, but why any sad retro geek should actually want to part with serious money to own one is a bit lost on me.

It's not a very useful picture taking machine is it? Any more than a DB4 is a very good way of getting around, but at least you might get laid with a DB4 :D

Not nearly as sexy as in a DB4 or DB5!

How about a Skoda Estelle?

You will probably have to wait a while as it's not due until early 2011. I'm not sure how early people get the pre production models for review but it will be interesting how it compares with the Leica X1.

So you don't 'get' it? I am sure people who are not sad, retro geeks will and be happy with it as a picture taking machine. You make it sound as if it will burst into flames every time you press the shutter button!

It's going to be stunning...... I can feel it it me water!:D

LOL No I think I do get it. It's a lovely thing!

What I don't get is all those people who apparently know a bit about photography and have the Full Monty DSLR outfit, can suddenly be pursuaded that all you need is a fixed lens compact, and that foot zoom is the answer to everything. They want to believe it in moments of romantic delusion, but it's not true. Which is why nobody has used cameras like that since the 1950s.

It's a sexy little pice of retro chic. But very limited as a camera.

But fulfils a niche. I have certainly not posted that it can replace a whole DSLR kit, I think you may have read that into the posts. It would make a lovely foil to a full set of kit when you just want to carry something smaller (and I know about the higher quality zoom compacts and m4/3) that should take superb pictures. That is where it sits for me. And I am quite happy with a fixed focal length too. Then again I am also happy shooting film through my OM-2sp (acknowledged as one of the worst OM models!), so perhaps I am wierd. ;)

The problem with this camera is that you will have to buy a 60's E-Type Jaguar so you can look at the camera while it is sitting on the leather passenger seat. How sexy is that!!
It's a lot more modern than that. Retro chic innit?

Think of the Jaguar S-Type, the Rover 75, the Fiat 500 or a Triumph Thruxton. Looks heritage - works like new.

I'm looking to replace my G3 after years of hammer, looks fantastic and having no zoom is a big plus for me.

Test the market with a camera that works. If it sells there is probably a chance others will jump in and develop the idea.

Gives `em a chance to decide whose mount to use and sell again to the the early adopters as well as those who wouldn't jump at a non-interchangeable lens design.

Of course Fuji will be happy to sell you a X200 with interchangeable lenses 18 months down the line, it's how they stay in business! :D

i dont really get the anti fixed lens argument. if it came with interchangeable lens then that would take away one of the big selling points, the portability, people would just end up with another camera bag full of lens. this is surely design to be a slip in the pocket high quality compact, not full system.

There's nothing stopping you only taking one lens out at a time you know;)

fair point Kev but they would still all have to be primes to keep the size down.

So convert that to UK pounds and you get roughly £820 which is what I estimates :D SO give it a few months in the shops and the price may fall a bit which would be nice.

Plus Vat etc, in reality it'll be nearer £1100.....

Let's hope it's not that after a few months otherwise I will have to spin the wife the gear buying yarn of the year!

Of course it will be very expensive. Posing always is.

It's probably not cheap to make, especially in small numbers, and then there is the pose tax on top.

Poser tax? If it was a leica I would understand but it's not. I doubt anyone but other togs would recognise it and I don't hang around with other togs that much. I am not sure why you seem to be spoiling for a fight here.

Retro in everything but price if that is correct (and ¥150,000 currently is about £1100). Shame.

As a £450/£550 camera it would be nice and I could see a whole lot of older (perhaps) 'lapsed', not photography obsessives, being interested in it. But those sorts are not about to spend over a grand on a pretty camera.

Good luck Fuji, but sadly I think you've shot yourselves in the foot if you try to sell it with that sort of price over here.

Fuji have always made frighteningly expensive gear and this will be no exception. Although I'm sure it will come as a shock to those that only know them from the compact market.

This is a 'compact'.

 what I meant was people that know fuji only for the finepix cameras are not going to know that they are also behind some of the finest medium and large format kit ever made. Including all the lenses for the Hassy H series cameras.

You and I know this is likely to be a quality piece of kit. I suspect it will well be 'worth' the money they are asking for it too (even though I will be waiting and see how it compares with whatever else is available when it is launched!) But for the 'older' photographer or those that may have 'given up' or those who are just looking for a simpler camera than one that steers by the stars and predicts earthquakes - are going to be somewhat disappointed when they see the price.

Sorry Jim, I'm not spoiling for anything.

When I say pose I mean it's form over function, styling before shooting. Which is okay I guess, and it pulls off that trick pretty well. I'd be lying if I said I didn't find it more than a little alluring ;)

Frankly I would say it is 'reassuringly expensive'.

Edit: the optical-electronic viewfinder sounds fantastic

No problem! ;) And I agree about the viewfinder, the concept is superb!

would love one but the price is likely to be such that the Nikon P7000 seems a more logical choice.

Everything is 'styled' though.

This Fuji is just taking is references from a pre-digital 'film' era. It is not that different to the Corinthian-style fluted columns on the Bank of England harking back to the 'classical' idiom is it?

That's a bit highbrow voyager, just a bunch of snappers here you know. ;)

tis true though.

Most of my life, my walk around camera has had a fixed focal length. From Rolleiflex to Olympus XA. and everything in between. I have always also had other Professional Kit for work, but rarely took it out and about.
This looks a fine camera. I expect they will bring out a big brother with interchangeable lenses. They could use the EVF option.

If it had leica fit interchangeable lenses I would give it a look, but for me its still a case of dream of the lottery win and an M9.

I was hoping canon would have noticed this area of the market and come out with a camera that could at least out do the X1 by having interchangeable lenses

The Olympus XA was a gem of a camera  Here it is http://www.kenrockwell.com/olympus/xa.htm

It took the same concept as this new Fuji, and the form dictated by 35mm film (as the original Leica did) and wrapped it up in a new and supremely functional clamshell design that sat in the palm of your hand. And it worked very well indeed.

That camera is a classic, an icon from the 1980s. It took the Leica concept and projected it forward. This new Fuji isn't doing anything but hark back to a bygone era. Panasonic GF1 is a much better shot at the future.

It does look lovely but yet again there's no distance scale on the lens.

When the Olympus PEN E-P1 was introduced it was the 'dream' camera for me:love: But the price was just too expensive and the same goes for the E-P2 when that came out!

Now 14 months on you can buy the E-P1 17mm kit for £399 - I have realised my dream:love: Who needs the x100:lol:

Does anyone know what that little three position switch is on the side?

For me it's the lack of a physical viewfinder that does it. Evf just doesn't perform as well. I think the x100 has a great compromise. A interchangeable lens camera with this kind of system could replace an slr setup. The x100 never will. It, for me, would be a grab and go camera when I didn't want to take the slr.
