The "how would you edit this photo" game.

lovely that is Scottie!!

haha nice one scott

Thanks Nick and Stephen

Been thinking that this thread has slightly gone off the rails and should be bought back to what the OP set out for this thread to be.

Nothing wrong with the funny edits, but i feel the more serious ones should be recognised. A funny quick 10 minute cut and paste edit shouldn't be winning when there are better edits being over looked. At the end of the day, this thread is called 'HOW WOULD YOU EDIT THIS PHOTO', not destroy the hell out of it in 5 mins

Needs to change before the thread dies .... Well someone had to say it :'(

I thought the thread had a pretty good mix now to be honest and the best entry is usually the one that has had the most skill and time put into it- might be some exceptions but looking back recently seems ok?

It's good in a way that people can express what they want and perhaps not feel under pressure like they may in the other one- cutting and pasting still takes some effort if you want to try and blend it right- have you seen how hard it is to cut a shark out:lol:.
I feel if people are short on time a 5minute paste effort shows good commitment to the thread but agree we don't want that to become de-rigour.

I think at this stage this thread basically becomes about what we want to see which was really what we discussed recently when talk of merging surfaced:D

Cracking edit by the way- I'm rubbing out my flying badgers now- joking;)

Scottie +1.

Im starting to lose interest, it has to be said - sorry chaps!

I know i used to win alot, thats not my fault i just did my best - but lately (like the last one) took me a couple of hours (broke my own rule there!) and no one said a word...

Its nice for you're efforts to be recognised at least :-/

mmmmm, sounds like a b0ll0king. I kind of agree though. This thread has evolved in the direction of compositing (I wrote composting somewhere else!), which is where the majority of the contributors have taken it, and maintained it. My point is, that although it started in a different vein, it is the users that have dragged this thread to almost 4000 posts, by doing what they like to do, and would maybe like to do better. That said, (IMO) even quick edits should show some signs of effort, and the winner should be picked on merit. To ensure I'm not being hypocritical, I've just looked through my gallery, and there are some (most) silly edits, but all of them have received a certain amount of care, but not always the time I'd like to make them truly acceptable. Never overlook the fact, that it is, after all, fun. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that this thread is losing what it was started for. I'm not saying that the funny edits should stop, in fact they do balance the thread nicely, but they seem to draw more attention than the serious edits.
At the end of the day, we are all learning and trying new ways of editing, which is great and I know at times we don't have the time we would like to do a serious edit and that is why I guess we throw the odd silly one in. Ie like my last snow edit. Took 15 mins because I wanted to post something and was really busy at the weekend.
Nick, thank you for speaking out and your right, your edit should have got more of a response, it was a cracking edit and I for one apologise for not praising you on it. This thread is all about editing, so I guess if we recognise a good edit, we should at least say so. Also what made Nick's edit so good was because he listed how he did it so we can all try it out. Probably took him more time typing it out than a third of the edits took from start to finish! Especially my snow edit
Fun edits are great, please don't get me wrong, but I believe this thread was started by trying to improve or change the photo with our editing skills. Not just cut and paste all the time while the serious and good edits get over looked.
Anyway, had my rant, so on with the show and hope we can keep this thread going showing and learning different editing skills

Your edits are ALWAYS good ZC, and I'm not just bulling, but yes you're quite right.

A 1hr rule!- I'd get nothing done:lol: A lot of my edits will take 2-3hrs (even rubbish ones) which is pretty hard to find when you're me as it is for anyone I'm sure.

I liked your effect last time round as I did Stephens skeleton coming out of the gravestone but never quite got round to saying so, although I don't think the responsibility to reply to every post should be mine either.

I agree Stephen, but I feel if it all ends in fun, then the serious editors will leave and the thread will die.

Each and everyone of us posts funny or silly edits every now and then. Maybe we don't have the time to do a serious edit, or the photo posted for editing is uninspiring, who knows. But I agree that most of us when posting a funny or silly edit, there is still a level of care and attention taken with it.
By the way, nice edit Stephen, would have gone for a garden myself if Leigh hadn't mentioned the pond
It's not about the winning, it's about the taking part and a good edit being recognised, serious or funny .....

I'm not that concerned what the thread was originally started for- the way I look at it is the OP is no longer active here and it's basically up to us to make the rules as I feel we've earned the right to take this any direction we want:D. I'm all for anything goes apart from say posting an entirely different photo with all the same colours but not necessarily in the same order;) or perhaps only retaining 5% of the original.
I do like the move to listing technique when time allows or people revealing what they did when asked even when not mandatory. It's good for the thread and proof that changes can happen so if we want to redefine the thread, now's the time:D

One thing I will do is make more effort to recognise the efforts although to be honest some of you are so good I'd be here all night:lol:

Your right Dr_O, we do have the right to choose the direction we take. I'm not saying we should stop the funny and silly edits, I'm just asking for a bit more appreciation to the good edits. I don't want this thread to lose the fun factor as I'm sure no one does.
I also wouldn't like to see this thread with rules like they have in the OTHER thread. It is all about fun, but at the same time it's all about improving the photo with our editing skills and learning from others. Ive started editing in both threads lately because I do like learning different technics and also I enjoy the serious side so I can implement the technics learnt into my own photo collection.
Walter, your edits make me laugh, keep them coming mate. And I know you can do serious edits because you also post in the OTHER thread. But your humour balances the thread very well.
Anyway, I hope I haven't stirred things up too much, and I hope this doesn't get blown out of proportion. So just get on with the editing, not a good turn out so far people :(

Is there a way to make this brushing through business faster?

Edit15 by Dr_Ozone, on Flickr

Duplicate layer
Add layer> fill with black> add noise- went for 40%
Add Gaussian blur- 0.4
Create linked adjustment layer for levels- tweak to suit
Added gargoyles- did colour replacement on them for the building stone colour and free transformed to adjust to taste.
Brushed through night sky
Added in moon with some brushing over it
Created layer and painted some white for lights
Added layer and added in black square brush for light unit
Erased corners a touch
Oh yeah- at some point created adjustment layer for exposure on building and turned it right down and then created another one for the gargoyles and did the same
Phew, job done but maybe not quite in that order:)

what I've learned from this thread is that it takes some people a quarter the time to produce something 400% better than I can :D
i don't have a particularly comfortable setup for editing on my laptop, or a tablet/pen thingy and only recently got an up to date version of PS with it's clever selective tool
maybe i'll give the next piece a bit more attention :bat: :boxer: :D

Couldn't be bothered walking all the way round, so I just got the garden from round the side :)

Like the garden in the drive- I'll take your word you just relocated it rather than nicked it from another house:p:lol:

Hehe. The pond Leigh was referring to is on the other side of the hall and features in an earlier post of mine, the gardens I've dropped in are to the left of the hall as you look at it. You may have gathered its Lyme Hall in Cheshire and its one of my regular dog walks / runs :-)

Thankyou chaps, some of your comments mean a lot to my intest in continuing to edit.

I do agree that balance is the key. I suppose its all down to the person judging the winner. Some people judge what they think is the funniest, others what they think is the best technically. If some of you are spending 2,3,4 hours on an edit then not even making it to the top 3 i feel sorry for you and would gladly help if any of you need anything.

Nothing i see in this thread should take more than 2 hours really, and that includes my mansions on fire jobbies!! But that is down to your confidence with your editing package i guess.

But keep up the good work guys, alot of you post brilliant edit and i love them :)

Absolutely.

I will say though that the newer and bigger your ps, the quicker you'll get the job done. Some of the selections that take seconds in ps5 would take for ever in earlier versions.

Ta- gargoyles seemed to work quite well with colour replacement.

Not sure how to show toolbar like some I've seen but below is a capture from cs5;

1st point to note is I don't really rename:lol:

Anyway, so layer 3 is the night sky and then I moved a copy above that layer and it's level adjustment and then used the eraser to bring the night sky through- it's all right until it starts to get intricate and seems to take a fair while. Just wondering if I'm doing it right or if there is a faster way as you guys seem to do it in no time and with no jagged edges either?

The first thing I'd say is don't use the eraser tool. In doing that you're taking content away from that layer that you can't bring back. You need to make a selection of the part you want to dispose of, and then mask it. I realise that making a selection is the bit you're asking about, but whole books have been written just about that subject. I assume its your cs5 that you're using? If so the quick selection tool is available to you and will make such a difference. I will try to dig something out about selections tomorrow, but I'm on my iPad now so can't get to my stuff. I am amazed that you have done so much without masking. Hats off to you for that!

That would be great thanks- it is CS5 I'm using. I didn't think I was being the most efficient and I do tend to duplicate a lot in case of screw ups:lol:
I think I'm comfortable with knowing a bit about layers and recently have discovered about the layer type as well so masking sounds like the next logical step:)

KINNEL!! just typed about 5 paragraphs out explaining my stance on the thread and my 'puter crashed!!

Anyway... in summary.. it proves how much we care about the thread otherwise we wouldn't be addressing our concerns over it... we'd just let it fade away into the abyss. I think, like a few have said, a good mix of banter, skill and comedy are what makes the thread. I'd prefer to see 10 entries with a good mix, than 2 entries just to keep the thing going. Having said all that, regardless of my 'theme' i will always try and make sure my edit is neat and tidy and put the effort in.

I've learnt so much over the year or so of taking part in this thread and i'm still only at a very basic level on PS - but love the fact that there's still so much more to learn.

And don't you even think about diving out ZC otherwise i'll turn up at your wedding wearing nothing but a smile :gag:

So, let's keep it going guys.. credit where credit's due and plenty of encouragement

Where's MRG btw? The lowlife bumhole :lol::lol:

Well, that's me told..

Sorry guys I am back...had a re-structure in the company I work for and had to re-apply for my job ..so the last couple of days been preparing for my interview today at 08.30am..find out next Wed if successful here's hoping...anyway.

I agree with leftcurl :gag: I too have learnt shed loads doing this thread and had a great laugh on the way..the more we mump about content and effort the less people will get involved :cuckoo:

This thread was born for anyone who wants to have a go. If you want to cut and paste cause thats your level, so be it but, you may not win..now the more you just cut and paste hopefully the more you will want to learn to achieve better results..just like the rest of us when we all started.
lets not get too bogged down in how things are and let it flow..

Enough said away for a drink

Good luck with the job... at least you've been given the chance to make your case for keeping it

Hard times are becoming the norm these days

Good luck Mr G and well said

Good luck, James. Fingers crossed for you, mate.

Regarding the edits conversation. I think everyone is talking in the same ball park. I find photo manipulation such a fun challenge. I can spend sooooo much time finding the content for what I want to do. Then executing the idea can involve hours for me as I need tuts and help from sources all over the net. And the edits never end up as intended, which more often than not, turn out to be better than the original idea. Keep up the good work, guys:thumbs:

Thought I'd try a fantasy thingy job on this one. Took for ever and I don't think I pulled it off but, had fun trying. :)

Blimey Roger, thats a bit Discworld. Liking the demise of the inter-stellar tower

Thanks guys. Had to keep minimizing the screen from the wife as she's from across the pond. I've had enough clips around the ear for shouting 'BATTLE OF AGINCOURT!!!':lol::lol:
