The Great Meteorological Thread

Mornin' all from a fine and sunny Folkestone but there is still that distinct chill in the air, I think the wind must be wafting in from the North Sea thus keeping it fresh at this end. Probably won't be until high afternoon before I get to feel the warmth, especially when the sun swings around to the front of my west-facing house.
While the dry and settled theme is set to continue into tomorrow and into the weekend, there are signs of thundery-type breakdown as we go into the first half of next week thanks to a Spanish plume type set up. That'll have the effect of increasing humidity levels with cloud moving in from Spain and France and thus the risk of thunderstorms breaking out, but it is a long way off in forecasting terms.

Changing the subject a wee bit, I have bit the bullet and ordered a brand spanking new PC tower as my current 8 years old one is getting a bit long in the tooth. The new one has an i7 processor, 16 gb RAM, etc . . . and best of all, it comes with Windows 7 preinstalled - that what clinched it for me! The only thing it doesn't have is an SSD drive (but has a 2Tb drive), nor has it got a dedicated PCI-e graphics card but I can take the Nvidia 2Gb card out of my current PC and stick it in the new one so there's no wastage (another reason why I went for this new tower).

Delivery is about ten days! Can't wait!

Sounds cool Ian :)

On a totally unrelated note,
The weather was a little weird last night,
Well I say the weather that was very mild and pleasant.
The moon on the other hand....
Forgive the crap image all I had to hand was a 70-200.

As it rises above the trees

It then goes a kinda Yellow

But settles down to a "normal" colour
A couple of hours later.

HI Chris! Superb images all the same! That moon certainly did look big and fat last night, could almost read a book off it.

Thanks Ian :)
It just looked "almost" like a set of traffic lights in slow motion. :D

What a stunning week-end its been. It was perfect for the Megga-Meet in the Chilterns

I knew sacrificing virgins was the way to go, as far as controlling weather was concerned.
( supply is a bit thin on the ground now though :( )

None of this scientific clap trap for me :p

Bit sunny - too much contrast. :(

However, I'm not sure we'd all have fitted in the village hall had it been hissing down! :)

Been occasional showers all afternoon here and I think I saw a flash of thunder - I definitely heard the lightning! ;)

There is always one :p
Actually the hall held more than was there, "just in case" ;)
It would have been tight but we would have coped :)

Until someone broke wind...

Afternoon all, for the first time I have been able to sit in the garden wearing shorts and T shirt without breaking out with goosepimple here at my coastal location.
However, I, and my house, are stinking of stale BBQ and dope courtesy of next door. :puke:

Go round for a smoke(d burger!!!)

Hi Nod! Naaaa, I vaule my life too much. :D. However, that will be much less of an issue today as it is being rather dull and overcast with temperatures at a more tepid 15.0 C with 89% humidity. It is staying dry at the moment but rain and fresh north east winds is forecasted to move in from France and make it wet this afternoon and into tonight.
The lawn will appreciate that, but this boring grey sky where it's like being inside a giant tupperware container and the prospect of having to turn the heating on for my elderly mother is having the effect of making me feel like this . . .

However, the medium range forecast has been hinting of a ridge of high pressure building in from the Azores to settle things down as we go into next week.

Its mid teens here this morning Ian.
Clear blue sky's with a very light breeze.
More "pleasant" than of late :)

Hi Chris! It's now raining here at Folkestone and it's that dull I've had to turn the lights on indoors so that I can see what I'm doing.

High cloud and quite humid here now.
Hi teens too.
Not sure if we are going to get wet or not TBH.
Oh well its good for the garden if we do :D

No Rain here in Kemsing Ian, maybe I'll be lucky and it'll be wailing it down by the time I get back to Sittingbourne

Mid teens in the dark corner of the garden today and high 20s in the conservatory. Apologies for the weather over the next few days, I've just got the bike sorted and taxed! Enjoy it while it lasts.

It's just started pouring down here at Folkestone. Got soaked wet just by putting out the wheelie bins.

I have got my eyes on that cluster of lightning strikes over the French Coast on the radars but will that survive crossing over what is still a cold Strait Of Dover?

A beautiful red sun set here (y)
Mind you I wouldn't mind a little storm,
The grass is starting to look a bit yellow :D

Must have rained here overnight but now the Sun has got his hat on, although there's plenty of cloud up there as well!

No storm here, but quite a down pour during the night.
The sun is trying to wake up too :)

Afternoon all from a fairly cloudy Folkestone. It did rain properly last night where my rain gauge picked up 29 mm (over an inch), enough to cause localised flooding, but there was no thunder.
Further showers and isolated thunderstorms will break out over England and Wales for the rest of today, but as usual with such a showery set up, it'll be a hit and miss thing.
The showery theme is set to continue into the weekend but should be less widespread and not as heavy.
Looking ahead into next week, It does seem that he Eastern side of the UK may have to put up with showery rain and rather a lot of cloud under easterly winds while the best of the sunshine are expected over the Western side of the country but it is all a long way off in forecasting terms.

Today is supposed to be my new PC day, but the expected phone call from Argos to say that it is going to be delivered hadn't occurred yet. May have to wait until tomorrow or next week.

Fingers crossed for the new PC arriving on time Ian (y)

After a bright spell, it decided that I had seen enough sun for today,
Its been hissing down for an hour or so. :(
(I'm sure that me buying fence treatment stuff, id purely co-incidental :D)

Edit, I've really done it this time, its as black as night out there &
the Thunder and lightning is almost simultaneous!
:D

Just got in from work and it's now blowing a gale and hissing down here too.
Good excuse to curl up on the sofa with a good book/film :)

The storm seems to have passed now,
the sun is trying again,
But the hail-stones and the road out front turning into a mini "Ouse"
Was "interesting" for awhile ;)

Afternoon all as I type this on my super duper new PC during what is a fair and bright if somewhat breezy Folkestone.

This bright weather may just hang onto tomorrow for most of us, at least until when thicker cloud and thundery-type rain start to move in from the near Continent to affect the South East later on in the day thus leading to a rather dull and wet Tuesday.
There are signs of things settling down as we go into the second half of next week as high pressure try and ridge over us.

Hi Ian, enjoying the new pc?
What a wet day it was yesterday! Original plans were changed last minute and we decided to go to west midlands safari park. We got a little wet! Plenty of rain which cleared up for a nice evening but soon turned into a thunder storm. Plsasent at home today, even got washing done which I was surprised at. Off to glos and warks railway tomorrow, hope it stays like this for a good portion of the trip.

Loving the new PC, when compared to my former eight years old one, this one goes like poop off a wet shovel. :D

As for tomorrow's weather at your end, you shouldn't have too much in the way of rain but at the same time don't expect too much in the way of sunshine.

I think it won't be until at least the end of the week at the earliest will our weather try and become more summer-like, but for now at least it'll be good for the lawn.

Well it was certainly a glorious day here
I got the garden fence painted,
Well that is to say I would have done, if the coverage on the bucket was true.
Why do they lie? :(
More wood preserver to buy tomorrow, if its not raining that is ;)

Hi Chris! Funny you should say that about wood paint as that is exactly what my sister found out a few weeks ago. She bought this tin of Cuprinol and ran out before she completed finishing her garden fencing so she had to get another tin - and ended up with too much left over. Could come in handy for next year, I guess.
At least I don't have that worry because it's all privet hedge around the front and back garden. If I want to have fencing done, only the strongest would be able to survive the southerly gale force winds what with me living right next to the coast, yet my front garden faces dead on towards the west.

Tell her to get another tin now Ian, by next year they will have changed the colours again :(

Or we go onto having an even more stormier winter than the one we have had and all her fencing are blown over.

(I hope to God that will never be the case as that last one was quite scary).

The privet sounds like the best plan to me Ian :)

Hope that's not a long range forecast Ian :wideyed:

I bet the tin coverage guide is for PSE rather than rough sawn wood - the surface area of the rough sawn over Planed Square Edge is massive - and the sawn absorbs more! Far better to have some paint left over than to have to go and get more, especially colours (very rare for 2 batches to match perfectly!) By the time you factor in the fuel and time taken to just nip out for the extra tin, it's often more expensive than buying an extra just in case! Most stores will take back unopened tins and give a refund, so if you think you need 5 litres, get a 5l tin and one (or 2 ) 2.5s as well then (if you need to) return the extras next time you're passing B&Q.

I bet the tin coverage guide is for PSE rather than rough sawn wood -.
It clearly states on the tin, (bucket) not to be used on PSE.
This is also previously treated fencing,
not particularly porous just scruffy looking.

Glorious yesterday, pants so far this morning and to top it off my brakes went on my car Saturday, excellent start to half term... Please sun come and stay :D
