The Great Meteorological Thread

I still update my weather page daily but I now only focus on Kent because 1) there are loads of quality web pages and facebook groups that covers the nation as a whole and 2) less demanding and not quite so time consuming for me while at the same time enhancing accuracy rates.

My weather web page: http://thecloudmaster.webs.com/ (Regarding the forecast, not a lot to get too excited about as things stand - especially since it's still only April).

@Ian D J .and is still very much appreciated Ian ,,,thanks

Cheers Donut - and Hi Chris! Thought I'd give my own forecasting service that unique touch. Hope this Spring is being just as kind as you as it is being for me here at Kent. Certainly welcomed after that awful winter.
The next few days will take on a rather changeable and showery regime over the bulk of the UK - a reminder that we are still only in April. But the last time I looked at the outputs, there are signs of high pressure rebuilding over the country to settle things down again by this time next week - but it is a long way off in forecasting terms.

Its been a bit damp and dreary the last couple of days,
but at least its mild :)
I was on the mid'North East coast over Easter, and that was frigging freezing!
It was low double figures, but I bet that (very strong) wind chill was about -20 :D

Showers forecast through the week-end too :(

Sounds like you had experienced the dreaded "haar". That's low cloud, mist and of course the cold damp air coming in from what is still a fairly cold North Sea. Thankfully that rarely get that far south to affect us here at Kent.
Indeed there is is something of a blip as we go through the next few days - a reminder that it's still only April - but it'll all make for excellent growing conditions anyway. Perhaps my lawn could actually stay green for a little longer than usual this year, especially if the next few days could well see to the last bit of "useful" rain for quite a while if the medium range outputs are anything to go by.
Whoops, did I just say that out aloud?

Ooooh does that mean I might get some decent weather for my hols in a couple of weeks, hope so :D

Fingers crossed. I THINK (and this is a half gut-feeling guessimate thing and half thinking that a colder than usual Atlantic inhibiting low pressure developments) we may tend to have better luck in terms of warm sunny spells on and off throughout the summer as high pressure find it easy to establish themselves over the UK, whereas we really struggled with that in the past two summers. But don't quote me on it.

The ground is drier than most people think - that prolonged dry spell did the damage.

For example, Easter Day was horrendous down here - persistent rain all day and heavy enough to cause flooding on the roads.
But the sun came out on Easter Monday and this happened!

Talking to the locals in the pub, quite a few would have put money on it being too wet to burn.
But it took nine fire engines plus all their support vehicles to bring it under control.
About 10 acres was burnt.

 And yet it was only two short months ago most of that was underwater! It may be where grass was able to grow quickly and then, like you said, below average rainfalls in March and April had effectively dried things up quite quickly.

It looks like winter is going to have one last go at a part of the UK with gales over the very far South West today, then we'll be entering a cool and showery regime over the next few days, should feel pleasantly mild whenever the sun does stay out for long enough, though.
Those living at Hampshire had a rude awakening this morning by heavy thundery rain. There is a risk of thundstorms over the South East this afternoon, but, for all I know, places like my home town, Folkestone, may even miss out on the potential thundery activity and stay high and dry the whole day - especially since it's still bone dry and bright as I type this.

Bloody hell!

Got to see a vivid coloured double rainbow this evening.

And that is set to be a regular feature first thing in the morning and at the end of the day over the next few days as we go through a showery regime.
Looking further ahead still, there are signs of things settling down and staying drier for longer by the end of the week and into the weekend but it is likely to stay on the cool side with a risk of night frosts returning.

That's pretty cool Ian

Actually its stayed dry all day here, if not rather cloudy,
with the potential for rain fall

Hi Chris and cheers! Hope you had a good weekend (mine was quiet and uneventful as usual).

To be honest, after that horrid living nightmare of the past winter, anything after that has been pretty much a walk in the park. Okay, so it hasn't been "El Scorchio" sunbathing conditions just yet but I am grateful for what has been a kind and gentle "Goldilocks" type spring (not too cold and not too hot, and while it has been quite dry for the most part, there was just enough rainfall to keep the green on my lawn going).

Afternoon all.

The next couple of days are going to feel like Autumn is still with us with spells of rain, showers and strong winds sweeping eastwards over the country, more particularly over Southern and Western parts. There is a chance of gales (30 mph sustained with up to 45 mph gust) over exposed coastal and hilly areas on Saturday afternoon through to Sunday morning, not worth issuing a storm watch but it'll certainly blow the cobwebs away, not to mention making for rough Channel ferry crossings. Having said all that, at least the rain shouldn't be too much of an issue, merely enough to keep the lawn ticking over.
But the good news is high pressure expecting to settle over the UK as we go into next week, thus settling things down and becoming brighter and warmer, especially over Central and Southern parts where 22 C could be achieved somewhere over the South East by this time next week. However, eastern coastal areas may tend to be plagued by mist, low cloud and cooling sea breezes.

You do realise I'm gonna hold you responsible for the Megga-meet weather,
(17th AND 18th May)
now you said that don't you? :D

Hi Chris! The models are clearly showing high pressure sticking over the UK as we go into that weekend so you should be good for it. It may depend on wind direction trying to bring cloud in from the North Sea but that's me being pessimistic.

I don't care about rain at the megameet nor do the dogs, just want some really good weather wednesday and thursday before (y)

Actually the long range forecast bears you out,
Thanks Ian, seems you are in the clear after all :D

Phew, Chris. I live to see another day. :D

And Ingrid, you will be good for that as well as it becomes warmer, brighter and drier by then, along with of course lighter winds.

We have come up yorkshire way and there is a heck of a lot of water lying on the roads and just driven through a thunderstorm with some awesome lighning bolts coming down.

Indeed, localised thunderstorms are popping up at around your area so have fun with those.

Here at Kent, the sun is coming and going after having had a drab, dull and miserable morning with drizzle. It's also quite windy but this is more of the "friendly" westerly type rather than the annoying in-your-face southerly gales.

I give it about 3 hours (if that) before the weather we've had down here arrives with you, Ian!

:) I suspect the Folkestone Rain Deflector will see to that. It is blowing a hooley here and that wind is expected to last through the night before easing off tomorrow.

Phew, Chris. I live to see another day. :D
Of course I wouldn't really"hurt" my favourite weather man :D

Its been very much April showers today,
but with March winds thrown in for good measure !

Autumn weather here today very strong winds with the showers

:D After that rubbish morning involving overcast skies and heavy drizzle, I have avoided the showers for most of the afternoon and into the evening.
But I have had to turn the heating on for a while to get rid of that chill now that it has clouded over more thus blotting out the setting sun (my west-facing hobby room catches that).

I have sunshine forecast all day tomorrow! Looking forward to it, though not looking forward to all the washing I need to catch up on

HI Michael! Indeed, things are going to settle down and gradually warm up over the bulk of the UK over the next few days. Temperatures may get to reach 23 C (73 F) somewhere over the South East on Friday and more likely so on Saturday.

However, it does look like coming apart on Sunday and into Monday with cooler and showery weather working it's way in from the north thus opening the doors to changeable and showery conditions for the rest of next week - but with temperatures recovering to average values. Gardeners will appreciate that but not quite ideal for BBQ and sun bathing lovers just yet.

Will that give way back to settled and warm weather just in time for the long late May Bank Holiday weekend and the half term holiday? That, I cannot tell as it is a long way off in forecasting terms.

Hi Chris! Same goes for me, call it a "dry run" for when summer proper does kick in. Warm spells at this time of the year are still considered to be the exception rather than as the norm anyway, it's a bit like wanting it to snow in November.

Low teens outdoors in the shade here ATM. High 20s in the conservatory with the door open. Indoor veg likey!!!

Hi Nod! Just popped into town to get some bits and for the first time it felt properly warm in the sunshine, even here at my normally chilly coastal location. Cumulus has bubbled up since then (which was forecast anyway) but it is still turning out fine and pleasant.
Enough to wear T shirts and shorts and work up a sweat doing some spring cleaning mode as I gave parts of the house a good clean/scrub up

This is turning out to be the most "successful" kind Spring in a long time, a huge relief after that horrid nightmare of that past winter (I still have bad dreams about that!).

It is going to warm up gradually over the next few days (tomorrow, Friday and into the weekend), especially away from the East Coast and while it does look like saying warm as we go into next week, humidity levels may start to rise and thus thundery shower become a regular occurrance. But, it is a long way off in forecasting terms anyway.

Went out for a couple of hours this morning so had to shut the outside doors of the conservatory. Warm enough in town to eat lunch outside in a t-shirt and shirt and the conservatory was at 33°C when we got home!

Been upto 22 here today, not dried my lawn out enough to cut it though.

It did struggle a little to get up to 19.1 C here at this neck of the woods (south Kent coast) today but since we don't normally get that much rain, it is pretty dry (topsoil turning dusty) anyway and the sunny spells made it feel very pleasant.

Not much in the way of winter conditions on the hills of Snowdonia this year Ian, first time in a long period 3yrs give or take, I have recalled it as being this mild, Anyway water under the bridge, I always look forward to spring as I can get out of the house and record sunrise then return as my family are awaking having just missed the best show on Mother Earth :)

There were a couple of long, thin clouds here earlier but then the shiny tubes that were laying them went away and so did the clouds!

Too hot! Want rain!
