The Great Meteorological Thread

I was thinking the same earlier, I checked magic seaweed after I posted and I saw that there weren't any tropical storms active, they are probably going to make up for it next year

I was asked earlier do I think we are going to have a warmer winter this year, I said no chance it will be the coldest yet :D

:D I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked what this winter is going to be like and I've been coming up with the most honest answer I can think of and that is "I haven't got a clue". :geek:
I can predict the weather for up to two weeks with a certain degree of accuracy, anything beyond that then becomes educated guesswork.
I can say that the first two weeks of October is likely to maintain the dry and settled theme with temperatures often being above average values, then it'll start to become more changeable in nature as we go into the second half of October but it is likely to remain quite mild.
What I have noticed is that we tend to get the first proper cold night involving widespread frost and icy puddles by the second week of November, along with temperatures being at single figures widely across the UK by day time.

Well if it "holds" through October, I'll be happy

Absolutely Hissing down now! Was woken at 6 by a thunderstorm which (of course) had died off by the time I was actually "awake". Cat still managed her "morning ablutions" without getting soaked, although (being a good daddy!) I was waiting by the door to open it so she didn't have to use her cat-flap! I spoil her, I really do!

I think that's what they call a sun dog,
Ice crystals in the clouds reflecting the sunlight,
into an almost rainbow, or indeed prism as you said.

I'm sure our resident expert will be along shortly to put us right though

Afternoon from a generally overcast Folkestone.

I couldn't see the image as that link lead me to a mobile version of my own facebook page!
But if it is what I am thinking then indeed, Cobra is correct in saying that it is a Dog Sun, or a Mock Sun. They are usually seen 22 degrees to either side of the rising or setting sun and is the result of refraction of light within millions of prism-like ice needles that makes up cirrus and cirrostratus cloud.

Other news, does look like my prediction of thundery showers over the South West for today has come off.

Sure did! For some strange reason (probably to do with someone looking out of the met office window...) the forecast changed this morning from "Possible showers" to "It's thundery!" at about 7AM (by which time the thunder was over!)

Still persisting down here (about 2 miles ATCF from the met office building.)

Its been dry and reasonably mild here all day so far at least.

We've had a cloudy but warm few days on the Costa Blanca. Bit more sun forecast for tomorrow and a high of 31C.

You can go right off some people you know :p

Mid teens and clear, with a breeze, not bad for late September :)

:D

Hi all. It turned out to be quite a fair ol' day today despite the brisk north easterly breeze. Was decent enough to go on a short bike ride.

It does look like most of us here in the UK will experience rather overcast and windy conditions all the way through this coming week.
Then it looks like things are going to become quite wet on Thursday onwards with proper rain-bearing fronts starting to move in from the Atlantic.
However, temperatures will remain above average values the whole time anyway.

To summarise, it'll be a cloudy and damp week. Not really one of the better weeks for the landscape photographers amongst you.

Thanks Ian and Cobra for the explanation. 22deg to the right of the sun was the position of it.

As for the wet, well at least the lawns have been done. I wonder what the sea crossing will be like on saturday from Penzance.

Hilly! (Take your Kwells/Stugeron!)

 Actually, I do think that things are going to settle down again as we go into the weekend as a ridge of high pressure work it's way in from the west. So with that to mind, Saturday does look set to be bright and fair for it.

I'm typing this from a sunny Folkestone, it's lovely out there, ideal for that walk into the town to get some bits.
But the rest of the week won't be quite so favourable as it tend to become cloudy and breezy with Thursday being the worst day in terms of becoming wet and windy over the bulk of the UK (some areas may even have some thunder).
Then clearer and brighter skies should start to work it's way in from the Atlantic on Friday in time for the weekend - the results as already mentioned at the beginning of this post. Some western areas may tend to be hassled by showers, though.

35° here according to the thermometer up in the village when I collected the girlies at 15:30

Sarah, I refer you to posts 2226 and 2254...

Enjoy it (he said begrudgingly!!!)

It's still just warm enough here to sit in the conservatory at night (with the doors to the house open) in a T-shirt. Not expecting to be able to say the same in a week or 2! CH is on but the thermostat's set at 17 degrees so it hasn't fired up yet. How many days until June 10th 2014?

Had a very lively storm pass through here earlier on this evening! I even got to see a bolt hit a building only a couple of hundred yards away from here, which was immediately followed by tile-rattling gunshot thunder! There was also torrential rain which caused some flooding around the town.
Then the storm left as quickly as it came in! The whole thing lasted about half an hour.
I couldn't get the camera out for it due to the rain pourig down so I could only spectate it from my window.

That sounds like some kinda storm Ian!
We had a couple of hours rain yesterday afternoon,
but nothing out of the usual.
So far pleasant and mild for October

17oC and raining at 6am this morning!
Crazy weather, has that global warming they have
been promising for years,
finally kicked in ?

Aftenoon from a dull and damp Folkestone. :D Indeed, that storm I had last night (and I can class it as a proper full on thunderstorm) was a very lively thing, I'm gutted that I had the camera through an opened window to where the bolt was going to occur, but then the heavens opened and so I had to bring the camera in and as I was just about to shut the window, there was that massive bolt right in full view!

However, on a lighter note, I've had 22 mm of rain so far for this month (14 mm of it since 9 pm last night), which makes a change for what is normally a dry part of the UK. And it's only four days into October. The lawn is looking very lush for it and I'm sure that the increased nitrate in the air bought on by last night's thunderstorm will give it a boost!

Anyway, things are going to settle down and become dry for a good week - and beyond - over the bulk of the UK as a large high pressure system becomes firmly anchored over the country.
But it won't necessarily mean there'll be wall to wall sunshine as there'll be varied degress of cloud cover and fog and mist will tend to become a regular occurence by night as winds become calm.
Temperatures will remain above average for this time of year, though.

If you want the unofficial weather forecast for the day, then you are welcome to take a peek at my Cloud Master web page: http://thecloudmaster.webs.com/

18 here outside (28 in the conservatory) so enjoying the warmth! Gloriously sunny morning but clouds now drifting in from the West. Cat much happier now she can go out sans a soaking!

Today was just perfect, I'm sure Sarah will confirm it too. It was officially Alicante's hottest October day since 1904. Needless to say I spent most of the day on the beach with my kindle and iPhone!

Is there a Spanish word for "Git"?!

32° at 15.30 according to the thermometer in the Farmacia :D Incredible for this time of year :D

It was that here yesterday afternoon. Of course, I am sat in the conservatory and it had been shut all morning with the sun on it! Currently 10C outside and a meagre 17.5C here.

Afternoon from a fairly pleasant Folkestone, the sunny breaks we are getting, along with a light south westerly wind is enabling temperatures to get up to 18.2 C in the shade over here.
The longer I can hold off wanting to turn the heating on, the better it is. Especially now that my energy provider has just jacked up their prices. :bang:
The childhood novelty of a proper cold and snowy winter is fading thin with each passing year. :)
