The Great Meteorological Thread

Hi DD, I and C and M.. :)

Nothing to report on the weather front.
That storm cloud past over us and has gone now. Phewww, so its back to normal at 20c daytime and 4c at night..
On that bombshell..

Laters..

Hi Guys
There was a "fair" frost Friday morning and it looks set for it to be another in the
morning, the cars are starting to turn white under the clear skies.
Still it makes a nice change from all that bloody wind, rain and mist / fog,
of the past week up in the North West :)

Snow is forecast up in the mountains where we live on Monday... Boooooo thats not cricket is it.

Mornin' all you well awake souls. Woke up to a frost even over here - and it was 9 am at the time! Still quite bright, but scattered stratocumulus is starting to fill in the sky as I type.

After I posted this morning, I checked the temp, it was -6! So must have been colder in the night. Another frosty night tonight, already to -5 not so long ago. Which reminds me, I must buy a new max-min thermometer!

It was cold clear and frosty here today as well.
Made for a nice TP meet at Whipsnade zoo. (high in the chilern hills, Bedfordshire)

Quite a hard frost during the night but walking home from work at 07:30hrs, the sky's getting a little hazier. My nose and ears still thought it to be hovering around 0. Daytime Temp might pick up to +3 or even +4, according to Met Office. I'll be in bed, so :p
:)

Mornin' all you awakenin' souls on this cold but settled Monday morning. Looks fine and clear out there but still frost-free (it was were winds has been wafting in from the SE, where the Strait of Dover is).

However I have just seen a nice coloured sunrise . . .

Hope you were treated to the same thing this morning.

Lovely sunrise Ian. It was a bit weak here this morning, but was great to wake up to such a hard frost. The ground was proper rock solid, -5 at 07:30 this am. Looks like we have another one tonight as well.

I keep looking at weather stations, and I have found this I am tempted to get something like this.

Wow - I thought they were hundreds of pounds.
Looking forward to hearing Ian's comments, because at that price I'll have one too!

Mornin' all from quite a sunny Folkestone, although high ground from an approaching weak Altantic front is now starting to fill in the sky. Also we have escaped a frost again due to winds wafting in from the sea last night, but that was only a coastal fringe thing.

Regarding that weather kit, as a starter kit for beginners that will do more than very nicely. Especially since it does come complete with a rain gauge. I'm even thinking about getting one of those as a back up for when my ageing WS2300 I bought 5 years ago for £150 breaks down.
Don't forget to place the thermometer sensor in a well shaded place as direct sunshine will "overcook" air temperature readings (the official Met Office approved method is to measure shade temperatures).

Hi Ian.. That seagull sitting on the roof.. I've seen him before. :D

PS Great photo mate.

Here's my offering from Trabuco.
Cloudonhill.jpg

The mountains have got a hat on..

Its been a cool 17c daytime and even cooler -2c at night.

It may even be the same seagull. :D

Like the look of that blanket of fog rolling over the mountains! I do get to see a similar kind of thing here at Folkestone as fog spills over the hills to the north of the town. It's usually an early spring thing as everything warms up during the day but it still gets freezing cold at night, while at the same time there is still a lot of winter-type dampness in the air..

Hi Ian, thanks for the comments on the weather station, I am going to see if I can get one at some point. Last nights weather was quite odd, there was a frost, but then overnight the temperature rose and the rain came, Tonight is a very cloudy night, and seems a little milder.

Boy, this winter is being reluctant to show it's rude bits so far this season!

The medium range outputs are suggesting a cold but dry and settled trend - more especially to the South and East of the UK - as we go into the last week of January and the first week of February. That's where perhaps somewhere along the line the potential of some snow coming in from the east will always be there.

HI Guys,
Its been mild breezy overcast and a few spots of rain but that was all, today.

Lets hope the snow holds off next week I am working near the East coast ;)

I don't often post weather related images, maybe because I hardly ever take them? :D

Here's one from Sunday, I saw this developing while shooting
the peace Pagoda at Willen MK, so I thought I'd grab it for "here" moody or what?
Just a bit of a tweak to accentuate the clouds a little more.

Thanks Michael

Oooo I like that, it's got that moody apocalyptic look about it.

The sky is falling in :runaway:

Getting mixed predictions of Aurora for tonight up here at 55degrees north (or there abouts).
Shed any (Norhtern ;) ) light, anyone?

A few people here in Berwick have said the same thing. Toying with the idea of heading out later on but not sure where to go

I'll be at work, so a bit limited. I've got a pretty good view of Wearmouth estuary to the North Sea and Wearmouth Bridge in the opposite direction but I have to go outside. No biggie tbh but hope one of two supervisors visit. He's also a keen photographer and would overlook my little indiscretion :)
Met Office say clear skies til after 2am, so here's hoping!
Must dash, work in 40mins!

Spooky this post came up as I'm watching your town on "Great Railway Journeys" on BBC2 right now, looks like a lovely little place!

I think the peak of the CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) will have passed by Earth by now so it may be that the lights won't be as vivid and widespread tonight. Still would be worth casting an eye on the night sky just in case.
However, apparently the Sun had just given off another CME which then may result in heightened aurora activitiy at around the 25th.
Indeed, Mike, it does look like the Eastern side, as well as parts of the South, of the UK will have clear skies for the rest of this evening - until eventually after midnight the general cloud cover already over the West of the UK will then start to move in.

Good luck guys hope you get the shots:thumbs:

And of course, as luck would have it, the CCTV camera that gives me a warm office view for a heads-up is off :(
Can't keep popping out too much, too often, that would be stretching 'work' a bit far :)
Fingers crossed all the same. Nearly late for work.....damn..cyas.

I'm slightly worried by that term

I did read somewhere (and I know you should never believe everything you read ;))

But apparently the winter of 2012 / 2013 will be the best year for
the "lights"?
Apparently its a peak of a 5 year cycle?

Ian?

Hi Chris (you don't mind if I call you by that name?). :D Coronal Mass Ejection . . . that did sound a bit wrong. But I suppose that what happens as soon as the sun gets the teenage spots. :naughty:

As far as I know, the sunspot activity heightens every 11 years and it is currently at it's peak. It's those spots where the "solar waves" (CME) are ejected from.
I may be wrong as this is leaning on the side of astronomy (which I'm not really into that much) rather than meteorology but that's my take on things.

Well it certainly makes a change from a lot of names I get called on here :D

Thanks for your input Ian its appreciated
I was planning to do this late this, early next year, looks like I might be out of luck then?
Doubt that I will be able to move this forward either :(

Oh, by the way while I'm here. The medium range outputs are firming up properly on the idea of colder air coming in from the east as we go into next week.
However, whether that may bring snow along with it is another question for another day. For now, I'll use the word "potential".

know what you mean it's pouring down here and chilly with it, one of those days I'm glad I'm not working :D
