;) :)

In the meantime, I'm still looking forlornly in the distance for that first proper wintry weather of the season. Pressure really is starting to build up over Siberia, but at the same time the Altantic with it's low pressure and frontal systems won't give up.
And it looks like the UK will be stuck in the middle of it with cold and cloudy conditions.

Have you got enough rock salts, got the sledge and snow boots ready and waxed the sledge? :D

As most of you are aware of it by now, it does look like winter is about to kick in properly as from tomorrow onwards as cold Continental air moves in from the east to affect the UK.
However, once the cold air does become established, then there's the question of not IF but where and how much snow will fall over the next few days.
I am expecting this cold spell with the *potential* of snow to last for most of next week. Beyond that is anyone's guess, really.

I shall expect this thread to get filled up with snow reports and, better still, snow-related pictures as we go into next week. I hope I have something to contribute (although the South East and East England are in the prime spot for it).

Great I had long distance travel plans for next week :bang:

It looked liked snow as the sun went down today, but alas, it decided to hammer it down with rain instead.
I guess that the air temperatures, may have still been too high?

All eyes to the east as cold pooling from Russia's North is currently migrating this way. The worst of the temps (850hpa -15'c, or -15'c at 5000ft asl) wont arrive until midweek but this latter end of the weekend see's a clash between this cold pooling and a warm front trying to advect the country.

Models show the cold pool wins and we are stuck in siberian temps as far out as 172hours ahead.

I don't often post weather related images, maybe because I hardly ever take them? :D

Here's one from Sunday, I saw this developing while shooting
the peace Pagoda at Willen MK, so I thought I'd grab it for "here" moody or what?
Just a bit of a tweak to accentuate the clouds a little more.

Light breeze and around the 2oC mark :(

Afternoon Chris and everyone reading this bit from a just as dull, damp and dreary Folkestone. :D

RJL more or less summed it up, but here's my take on things as far as the coming week is concerned.

As we go into next week, it's really a case of waiting for that pool of very cold air over Eastern Europe to work it's way westwards towards the UK - but it's all in the wind direction when this cold pool arrives at the UK.
If winds comes in from the E or SE then it is most likely to turn bitter cold but may well stay dry and bright since it'll be coming in from the continent.
If the wind comes in from the NE then convective snow furries will bubble up over the North Sea and then they go onto affecting the Eastern side of the UK.
So with all that in mind, it does look like the first half of the week will be mostly dry and bright but becoming very cold for most places, although it will tend to be rather cloudy with rain, sleet and hill snow over the Western side of the UK.
Then there is a risk of snow showers coming in from the North Sea to affect Eastern Scotland, Eastern England and the South East as we wear on into the second half of the week and into the weekend. But it's all in the wind direction where some areas could cop it and others will miss out on it completely.

Anyway, be safe whatever the outcome is as we go into the week.

My local council obviously think there's a chance, they left a huge bag of rock salt at the end of the road ready, it's quite a slope to get up.
Won't do any good though, most of it has been wheelbarrowed away for use on private drives, bloody typical

Had a few flakes on the car when I got up this morning, sun shining now, bloody cold though

Its cold and dreary here in Essex. 2 degrees when I went out at midday and very dark and cloudy. Not nice at all.I just came back from a month in Western Australia where it was 42 degrees yesterday.Thats a bit too hot for me.

Hi all from a rather cold and damp Folkestone. It was very dull with some light snow this morning but now it's trying to brighten up as the sun breaks through a wintry-looking cloudscape.

Have decided that the time frame for the far South East (it's going to be a very local feature) to get proper snowfalls is between 12 pm Thursday and 12 pm Saturday, that'll be in the form of convective stuff coming in from the North sea. Then it'll all decay away as Atlantic-based air try and come in from the West.

But here's the tricky bit; when the Atlantic airmass does try and move in across the UK over the weekend, that could produce some heavy "transitional" snow (rain turning to snow) somewhere over the UK (most likely over the Midlands) as this mild air collide with the frigid cold air sitting over the UK.
That does make for some of our most noteable snow events, so well worth keeping an eye out for the forecast come the weekend.

Hi everyone. Has been bitterly cold here today, Don't think it has gone above 2c. On the way back from school and there were a few little flakes dropping. Will be looking forward to weekend forecast, I am missing the snow this season

Thanks for that Ian
It did snow here briefly this afternoon, apparently.
But I was in Gerrards Cross, where I know for a fact that it did snow.
Albeit "light" and not enough to settle.
Was bloody cold working outside, I know that :(

Hi, me again. So, who's liking this current cold spell? :D

The past few days in a nutshell.

And here's a quick little bump up for my own forecast blog: http://thecloudmaster.webs.com/ There is also a facebook page with the same name where you are very welcome to join and drop comments off.

PMSL Ian that cartoon is blrilliant :lol:

Really freezing cold here no thaw yet, left the fountain and waterfall on in the pond which is keeping it parially clear so the birds can drink
Can't wait for the snow as long as I can still get out

Ok so your's has bigger ones then mine :p
I've taken the spray bit off the pump so it's just gushing water

Love the cartoon Ian  :D

But I know how that monkey felt yesterday :(
I just couldn't get warm :(

Today was much better, still below freezing
but no wind chill, it felt positively tropical by comparison !

And finally, it's snowing moderately here!

Tomorrow evening and into Sunday morning looks set to be an interesting period of time for those living over the South East, Central England and Eastern England.

Here's my take on things (excuse the Fisher-Price look about it):

Thanks for the map Ian
Looks like I'm in for the yellow stuff ;)

What is it they say about not eating yellow snow ? :D

Very cold morning here in south Manchester / Cheshire but no frost, moisture must be locked up in the clouds to make an appearance early afternoon if the forecast is correct .....

Light frost, here, this morning, no breeze and now the cloud is building.
Time will tell no doubt ;)

Simply cold here, no snow. Full cover of white cloud. No frost to see but as I was meandering home this morning (hic) at 4am, my fingers and ears were numb. Might be time for long-sleeve shirts on a night out :)

Just started snowing! Well, almost. There's a few bits of white stuff floating down but looks too embarrassed to call itself a snowfall.

So far we have a dusting, enough to turn the cars and the paths white.
There is no depth to it though it still snowing "gently"

Well, it's Baltic winds here, will sell girlie for fitted carpet and a pair of Ugg boots, you can have them both for cental heating and UPVC double glazed doors and windows too

Oh dear sarah that doesn't sound good, at least we are prepared for the cold here, nice roaring log fire, just a light dusting of snow so far :)
Have moved the car to the top of the drive though, not so much to dig out if we get loads
