The Great Meteorological Thread

Lovely view Ian. Has been quite sunny here as well today, but a bit chilly, 5c in the garden. Was hoping to have a clear night for some stargazing, but that lasted all of 2 minutes, huge cloud banks have descended.

I have been following this thread - which has to be the best thread EVER!

Been awesome to see Ian's predictions and everyone else's input.
I would have like to have contributed more, but 'things' are a bit manic in Fozzy Towers at the moment!

Not a lot to report as the weather is very stable at the moment and not a lot of change.
Daytime temperture is about 18c so pleasant really..
So on that bomb shell I will get to work..

Hi Andy! And thank you from a rather wet 'n' windy Folkestone.

Indeed, my predictions for gales and heavy rain this morning for most of the UK is coming off as I type. It does look like Northern Ireland, West Wales, Northern England and Southern Scotland are bearing the brunt of it as the low pressure centre moves smartly eastwards over Northern Scotland.
I'm so glad I no longer have to go on that motorbike commute to my former greenhouse workplace. Glasshouses, motorbikes and strong winds wouldn't be a very good conbination!
I'd be spending all morning wondering if I would still be alive by lunch time.
Hopefully things will ease up a little as we wear on into the afternoon once the back end of this weather system - in the form of a squally cold front - moves on out into the North Sea by mid-day/early afternoon. Until then, you all be safe!

The wind and rain started last night around 2am. Local rivers were high the other day, I reckon they will be bursting there banks soon. Hopefully it will be dry tomorrow for the first walk upto school of the new year.
 
Morning all. Hope everyone is staying safe in this wind. Has been very windy here over night and been quite wet. A local bus route has been altered due to a tree being blown down. There is blue sky coming though so hopefully a nice afternoon to be had.
 
Mornin' Michael, and to anyone reading this. If the truth be told, it wasn't that bad here at my location. The hills, as well as all the taller building, to the north and west of me meant I was quite sheltered from this north-west gale, and thus was spared from the worst of it all. It did get quite gusty for a time this morning as a line of showers passed over us but it wasn't too exceptional.
However, if this wind came straight in from the south west or south - in from the Channel, then I'd be singing a different tune all together.

Doesn't look like Lenticular clouds to me..... far too low and not the right shape :cool: I wait to be corrected though :)

Thanks, the enterprise was my first thought to :lol: Earlier on that day I did see a proper lenticular cloud, but I don't know how variable they are.

I was going to say the exact same thing, it does look like the Galaxy class version too! EDIT: Actually, looking at it a little bit more, it looks a lot more like Voyager.

Actually, it does have some lenticular formation about it, albeit a weakened version. However, it does have the added bonus that the lot was lit up by the setting sun, so I'd say that was very nicely captured!

Its been a rough couple of days around these parts.
Howling winds and driving rain for the most part :(
The winds seem to have eased a little now and the rain quit.

With clearing skies and dropping temps, I bet that its icy in the morning and I have a 200
mile drive to the North East tomorrow.

Not helpful in the slightest :(

Not for a while yet. The GFS medium range outputs (which covers the next two weeks fairly accurately) suggests a continuation of the mild stuff for the next fortnight.
Still, at least we should lose all this nasty wet and windy stuff as high pressure settles over Southern Britain as we go into next week. That should mean dry and fairly bright conditions during the day but with a slowly increasing risk of frost and fog by night - especially if it stays cloud-free for long enough.
However, at this time of the year the sun is still very low to the horizon, so if it does become cloudy anyway then that's it, it'll stay overcast as there'll be very little surface heating to mix things up.

Hi Cobra, I think thickening cloud cover over the Western side of the UK may prevent a frost from taking a hold tonight anyway. Even if skies does remain clear for long enough over the South East, there'll still be too much of a breeze to let any frost set in so I think you should be okay travel-wise.

Dull and overcast today, with a light breeze now.
It feels quite mild too, but not double figures.

Nice sunny day and warm, tad chilly at night and no change in the weather forecast..

While it's now gone all quiet on the western front at this end (at least before winter may come along to bite us in the bum by the end of the month), I might as well use this thread to show a couple or three of photos I've taken yesterday.
I decided to go for a wander about the harbour area which is only a couple of minute's walk from my house, and see if I could capture the atmosphere associated with the setting winter sun.

That may come in handy, as the medium range outputs are latching onto the idea of a cold and wintry end to the month. Very early days, of course, but my spider-senses are tingling away.

I didn't really need to hear that :(
I'm off working in the North-west for the next month.
Roughly between the lake district in the North, and the peak district in the South.
Lets just hope that it holds off for a few weeks :)

I have a feeling that IF and when this does come off by the end of the month, it's really the Eastern side of the UK that may get to pick up the most of the snow as it all comes in from the east. But that's really a long shot.
But for now, it's all mainly settled stuff as an area of high pressure sits over the UK, however, martime air will get dragged in from the Atlantic and becomes a very slow moving mid-level warm air inversion trapping cloud in the process. Hence all this overcast stuff we are getting, and likely to have over the next few days.

Dunno what it's being like where you are, but it's lovely here! Sunshine in 100% clear skies - which is going against my personal forecast for "overcast skies this afternoon"! :D

Nothing to report on the weather front.
Apart from one day we have had clear blue skys for just on two months, so nothing to photograph.
All very boring.
Today as yesterday its 19c temp daytime and about 4c at night..
On that bomb shell..

Afternoon Paul. It stayed sunny the whole day here at Kent, also mild too at 9.9 C (at least for this time of year).
Although a couple of hours ago while on a bike ride I noticed there were some wispy-type smoky looking veil of clouds hanging in the clear sunny sky. I didn't know what it was, except it reminded me of that Brunswick exposion a few years ago.
It wasn't until a little later I found out on the internet that there was a massive explosion at a chicken farm in the middle of Kent. Going by some of the photos, the pall of smoke did look very large and "volcanic" in appearance.

Well it started raining when I arrived and didn't stop till I was half way back down the M6 this afternoon,
apart from the "mist" and high winds it was just like summer :D

I checked metcheck earlier and they appear to be showing upto 30mph winds for my location and rain on there 7-10 day forecast. Could be an interesting time once again if that is still the same by those dates.

That's a neat looking picture, Michael! Looks like cirrostratus being blown along in high level strong winds.

Awwww, Paul, that single cumulus does look lonely.

Anyway, good mornin' Cobra and all you awakenin' souls from a fine and clear Folkestone. While there is a nip in the air, I can't see a frost - but there will be one most places tonight!
The weekend does look set to be quiet and settled with good sunny spells by day, but frost and local fog patchy by night as an area of high pressure sit on top of the UK.
On Monday, there MAY be a little bit of hill snow over Southern and Western England as a weak weather front try and move in from the Atlantic. Whether it'll be of rain or snow, it won't amount to very much anyway - otherwise it does look set to be settled and dry with bright spells for most of next week.

Oh, here's a nice sunrise spotted from the back of my house yesterday morning.
