The Great Meteorological Thread

Ian and Toby - thanks for the sympathy. Both dogs are feeling a bit sorry for themselves today, so lots of TLC and a good excuse to have lots of cuddles! :)

I love that picture, Ian. My immediate thought was it looks like an Impressionist painting by Monet. Have you done any pp on it?

Today it's raining, blustery, sunny, dull - and all within a couple of minutes :D

Jean

It's been a morning of good strong sunshine and knuckle-hard convective cumulus over here. No rain though as it appears to all skirt by to the north of me.

As for the photo, completely straight out of the box, apart from a tiny bit of contrast boost to get rid of the distant haze, I just let nature do the work for me. :D :D :D :naughty:

Hi guys :)

Away at the moment in surrey... :) Naff weather today as it started up nice, with warm weather, nice bit of sunny with little cloud. Then by mid afternoon it absolutely chucked it down... and I jsut happened to be on the 13th hole on a golf course :( But it was great to be out in it!

Hope alls well :)

Indeed as our weather reverts back to doing what it does best at: being changeable. :D

All is well over here as I plod along taking each day as they come, and hope you are making the most of your summer break.

I can relate to one of the dogs... I had ten teeth out within a few years for my braces. Lol. :gag:

Had a bit of everything again today :) Patchy cloud, with prolonged periods of sunshine... a few spits and spats of rain too.
Yep loving the summer break so far. Visiting Grandparent in Surrey at the moment, enjoying their company with a nice round of eighteen yesterday and relaxed day today reading my book - Narrow Dog to Carcassone by Terry Darlington. <- Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good humourous bit of travel writing. Will be off back to Deepest and darkest parts of Norfolk on friday :)

Hopefully they are well on the road to recovery then Jean

The day started off for me with a bloody puncture :(
cloudy and has been so, so far.
By late morning it started on the wet stuff, and we have had a few "cloud bursts" though the afternoon, and oh its still at it :(

I haven't even noticed the weather today - I've spent the day wandering round the house fretting while both our dogs were at the vets having dental treatment and one was having a throat problem investigated as well. It turns out he's got an enlarged heart, and it's pressing on his airways. :(

The other one had to have 9 teeth taken out!

Jean

Can relate to that Jean, had my 12 yo at the vets last week with a swollen mouth, turned out to be a rotten tooth but all the others are fine and his bloods came back clear.
Luckily I have a vet nurse daughter
Hope yours are both ok and recovering well

Weatherwise, well it started with a torrential downpour , been sunshine and heavy showers all day with a bit of thunder thrown in

That's amazing, Ian - nature did you proud. It would look great printed on a canvas! :)

Toby - 10 teeth removed! O.M.G. - poor you. I hope the brace stuff is all sorted now, though. :) Glad you're enjoying a break and a few rounds of golf!!! I hope the weather holds for you. The book sounds good - travel books so often end up like a boring list!

Hopefully they are well on the road to recovery then Jean

Indeed Chris - TLC and cuddles work wonders. Although Rusty now thinks he has first call on the reclining armchairs. :) Cloudy *and* a puncture - bad luck!

Oooo - poor thing - that sounds very painful. I'm glad to hear it was just the one tooth, though. I'm sure he made a speedy recovery with all the expert nursing care on hand. :) Thank you for the hug - I needed it.

Morning team :)

Saw this and thought of you lot immediately :)

Starting next wednesday :)

Overcast and drizzely here this morning :(

Hehe - I thought about 'us', too. Ian's cartoons would make a good addition to the programme.

Today started rainy, and then cheered up and got quite warm. But the sky's now heavy with clouds.

Overcast and drizzely here this morning :(

Mornin' from a fairly bright 'n' breezy Folkestone, although going by the satellite runs, I suspect it won't stay that way for too long.

Indeed and I shall watch that programme with interest. Just pray and hope it's not based here at the Folkestone area, or they'll be really pushed for interesting material! :D
I hope that programme will show an insight into how a forecast is put together, thus making the none-believers :D :naughty: ;) amongst the general public appreciate how much work goes into putting together the daily forecast.
I know it'll be designed for people who want to get into meteorology for the first time so I'd should imagine that there'll be nothing new in terms of contents in my own eyes.
But at the end of the day, it's nice that the BBC had caught on and is coming up with something to keep us weather fanatics happy as well as to get people into meteorology. Just hope they know what they are letting themselves in for but It is good that the BBC at least is going to try something brave rather than the comfort zone that is the endless run of celebrity competition-type shows.

Bonsoir lovely people :)

Was just wondering if I could have a possibly forecast for Saturday, particularly the evening. My own predictions differ slightly to what is currently being said by a few different sources :) And its quite an important evening for me and the gang (The family :) )

Hope alls well :)

Hi Toby, am plodding along taking each day as they come over here, the usual kind of thing.

I'm afraid that the weather over the weekend doesn't look very good as things becomes unsettled and windy across the UK.

Saturday may start off dry over Eastern parts but it'll be quite overcast and windy. A weather front already over Western parts will march quite smartly eastwards to bring rain to most areas by the end of the day.

Sunday will then be a day of sunny spells and blustery showers for most parts once that frontal system clears off out into the North Sea. However, it won't be feeling that warm as winds become a fresh to strong north-westerly.

Indeed, it does look like this Summer is falling apart around our ears - but don't forget there's still the rest of July and August to come. Bear in mind that the Great Heatwave of Summer 2003 (when it reached 100 F over parts of the South East) occured on August 11th - and that particular summer on the whole wasn't really that memorable.
So, still all to play for in terms of big heatwaves and I can't see any reason why this summer won't do the same thing.

And keeping the feel-good factor going, here's another cartoon just hot off the presses . . .

Thanks for that Ian! great cartoon again!

Again found something on the BBC this morning and thought it might be worth posting up... its all about forecasting and old folklore.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14087734

Mornin' Toby and all you well awakened souls from a rather overcast Folkestone.

Talking about old Folklores and the weather, I actually did a rough draft-type booklet based on that; "101 Weather Sayings - True Or False?" years ago! Where I tried to determine whether those sayings do come true, and why and how they are.
Now you have brought it back to mind and that I have a lot of time on my hands, I might get around to doing a online blog version of that book, and throw in some of my cartoon as illustrations!

Regarding this weekend's weather. I'm going to have to say that it really doesn't look good at all now, especially on Sunday. I won't depress people any more by going on too much about it, but let's just say it's now starting to be a good idea to "batten down the hatches". Especially for those living over the West.

Ah sounds pretty awesome. Give us the heads up when you start!

I can't believe saturday! Of all this great sunny weather we've had and we get this on saturday! Not a happy bunny over here! :(

Our weather does like to choose it's moments. :naughty: :D :nono: :bonk:

Just a quick heads up for those who have forogtten about it, or not aware of it but don't forget there's the "The Great British Weather" programme on BBC1 at 7.30 pm tonight. :geek: :D

Mornin' all!

My own predictions differ slightly to what is currently being said by a few different sources

I'm still thinking slightly against the grain on the whole situation. I'm personally thinking, rain scattered during the morning (now got two occluded fronts moving over!) Then a cold front moving over around midday, possibly improving situations later on in the day? E.g scattered sunshine from 6/7 onwards?

Patterns seemed to have changed over the last few days too!

Hope everyones ok :)

Mornin' Toby and all you well-awakened souls.

It is a bit of a messy situation, isn't it? My own take on things is that tomorrow morning - at least over the South East - will start off as being cloudy and breezy but dry with only patchy light drizzle, then geneal rain will start to push in from the west in the latter part of the morning leading to a wet and windy afternoon.
The general rain and cloudy stuff will then start to clear away out into the North Sea on Saturday night, leading to a day of sunny spells and showers across the UK on Sunday. However those showers will be quite widespread and a lot of them will be heavy and containing hail and thunder, especially to the North and West of the UK.
Those showers will tend to merge together to become longer spells of rain over the North West of the UK, along with gale-force winds. The best of any sunshine are expected over Southern and Eastern parts but even there showers will pester those areas later on in the afternoon.
And then the unsettled trend looks set to last into the first half of next week.

With all that in mind, I don't blame weather forecasters for being like this . ..

Oh what to do.
Do I go to Fairford (RIAT) tomorrow or not.........

If you don't mind getting very wet. The latest model outputs are going for 20 to 30 mm (an inch) of rain for that area by this time tomorrow, most of it falling between 9 am and 3 pm tomorrow. :shake:

Once again, the great British weather spoils my fun :'(

Loads of sympathy from me if the weather lets you down tomorrow, Toby. Remember the wedding I photographed a couple of weeks ago - constant downpour. btw - I promised to post some pics and I will as soon as the B & G have seen them. :)

Ian - I love the latest cartoons and the 'showers approaching' shot just about sums up the changeable nature of the weather at the moment. :clap::clap:

I'm off to London tomorrow on a hen do! Can't decide what to wear :bang::bang:

Have a good week-end everyone. ;)

Sou'wester and wellies! It's chucking it down! :'(

Sorry Toby - I'd been keeping fingers crossed for you. :'(

Jean

Cheers Jean....

I'm still quietly optimistic though... A few of my sources have come around to the forecast of dryer and sunnier weather this evening. And it all kicks off at 5 so that's not so bad :)

Hope you have a good hen due! :)

I once wore wellies to a stag due... Lol. Was a great night! :D

Mornin' all from a rather damp and blustery Folkestone.

And you could be right there, Toby! :) That's where the main rain belt clears away from the UK into the near Continent in the latter part of the afternoon. There'll still be plenty of follow-through type showers about though but most of them should be confined to the Western side of the UK by then.

However, expect a day of lots of showers and only very limited sunny spells tomorrow, with more persistent rain over Scotland. The first half of next week doesn't look too great niether. :shake:

I wouldn't minded it if I am still working in my old tomato greenhouse workplace, but now I'm out of this tomato picking business altogether, I've been wanting for things to get as hot as it likes!
Oh well, that's our UK climate for you. Still, I might as well spend the day schlepping about indoors watching Time Team re-runs and not feel guilty for it. :naughty:

I was right I was right!! :D hope everyones well :) party went well and the sunshine showed through as predicted around 6ish :)

Night all ;)

Delighted to hear the sun shone on your parade, Toby!

The hen do was good, despite us arriving at the theatre half way through the first half of the show - nightmare traffic - and they let us in. Good meal and a few drinks (!) and no hangover.

The journey back to the Forest today was 'orrible - torrential showers, high winds gusting across the M3 and far too many stupid drivers. :rules:

Just seen some of the downpours from the golf on tv! It looked like November at times.

Ian - Isn't it great to do nothing and not feel guilty about it? ;)

What's in store for us this week?

Jean

Mornin' all. Thought I'd give this thread a cheeky bump back up by showing this photo taken only a few minutes ago from my hobby room window.

This is classic knuckle-hard convective cumulus congestus forming in a cool and moist airmass of polar origin. It's only the energy of the sun that are causing these cloud to bubble up nicely.

Nice to have a proper weather-photography day today after the rubbish of the past few days!

Morning, weather-watchers!

Ian - I love that: convective cumulus congestus. It sounds like a Victorian cure-all wonder medication! :D

When is this changeable weather going to settle down? It's impossible to plan anything that's weather dependent. :(

Jean

:D Mornin' Jean. :) Unfortunately I still haven't found a cure for this summer which seems to be finding it very difficult to get a foothold, despiting that glorious Spring. Seems that we all have been lead into a false sense of security.

There are tentative signs of things trying to settle down at least over Southern and Western parts of the UK next week as high pressure try so hard to ridge in from the Azores, but signals are still uncertain at this point I'm afraid.
And even if it does come off, it'll never really going to get very warm as winds will alway be coming in from the west or north west.
Still, there's August yet to come and anything could still happen by then. Bear in mind we do get most of our more noteworthy heatwaves in August. That one in 2003 when it reached 100 F in parts of the South East occured on August 11th - and that took place during what was actually a mediocre summer on the whole . . . so, still all to play for as far as the rest of this summer is concerned.
I still think it'll give off a final blast and then it'll lead to a warm, bright and settled Autumn.

<----- Clutches tightly on straws.

Oh, and mornin' from a rather damp and overcast Folkestone. :D

Thanks, Ian. There's some hope then - just keep hanging onto those straws. :)

Are you still enjoying your spell of leisure? Hope so.

Jean

Mornin' Jean and hope it's all good at your end. Indeed I'm plodding along and taking things as they come. My elderly mum likes having me about the house, though!

It's a shame that this summer has fallen flat on it's face after that promising start to it, but I guess that's the UK climate for you. It's currently grim and grey and the tan on my legs are fading fast.

Ian, please tell me it's going to be dry in London Sunday, don't want to walk around in the rain in a bra!

There are so many innuendo's there that I just don't know where to start :D

Been a bit of a strange one here, very misty around 6am,
then that led to drizzle, then wind got up by mid day,
and that led to a cloud burst.

Dry at the moment so I'm off to get the grass cut (hopefully :))

A classic case of type before I think!

They do a walk in Southampton actually! Lol, it's for Walk the Walk for Breast Cancer

Are you now a (green) reformed character then, Chris? :naughty:

Morning Jean and Ian. Its dull and boring here today - just right for curling up with a good book.

No chance for me today - it's baby day (I look after my gorgeous baby granddaughter on Thursday and Fridays) We did well to get through 'That's my Duck'. :D

But after a dull, boring start, the day brightened up and was quite warm by late afternoon.

Ian - you'll have to order more sunshine before that tan fades completely! ;) I bet your mum's spoiling you rotten! :)

Jean

Are you now a (green) reformed character then, Chris? :naughty:
Nope, there were so many possibilities that I didn't know where to start,
mind you I think that (quote of Kelly's) would make a damned fine signature :D

I think I'm the one spoiling her rotten!

Incidentally, after having been dry, cloudy and mild all day - quite featureless stuff - suddenly it rained properly hard an hour ago. Not crazy torrrential stuff but enough to really soak everything.

It does look like things will slooooowly brighten and dry up as we wear on into the weekend. It's going to be a very slow process where showers will still pester a few areas - especially over the Eastern side of England.

I think it won't be until next Tuesday that Summer should start to make a proper comeback with warmer temperatures and more in the way of sunshine - especially over Southern and Western parts. All a long way off but signals are strong for high pressure to re-establish itself over the UK next week.
