The Great Meteorological Thread

Whoops! Although, over here at Folkestone, it's still bone dry and quite bright as the sun is still shining quite weakly through cirrostratus cloud (all milky and hazy). Although it won't be staying that way for too long. ;)
Like before it's being a hit and miss feature as the heavy stuff occurs over the South West. That general cloud cover and rain feature had moved in from the Atlantic and covered more of England and Wales earlier and more quicker than I thought but other than that I think it's going according to plan as that rainband struggles to reach the far South East.

Hi all.
Here at Southampton Airport....... Yesterday we had thunderstorm warnings. I got all excited as I love a good storm!!
But nothing sadly :(

Today it's chucking down. We're getting a right soaking.

It makes me laugh, the amount of people (staff!) here today moaning about the 'crap' summer we've had so far!!!
Ok it hasn't been mega-hot, as such, but it's been very dry, as we know.

Crazy world..............

Exactly the same here! Although I didn't get any good shots. :(

How quickly people forget the long spell of dry, warm weather! I'm delighted it's finally chucking it down. I didn't even mind getting drenched walking the dogs this morning, and I keep thinking how the allotment will be soaking up all this lovely wet stuff.

:banana::banana::banana: :D

Jean

Damm - stood up again, Chris!!!! The story of my life. :rules: :help: ;) I hope the hot date lived up to expectations - and your head isn't pounding too much this morning. :)
Sorry Jean but I did offer :shake:

At least the pint was cold and the peanuts were Erm...........
Warm :D
btw I don' get hangovers (my turn to feel smug :D)

<---- Puffs chest out in pride. My photography and meteorology in perfect harmony. That's actually about as good an honour as it gets!

However, I submitted that photo a long time ago so I cannot remember what photo it was, but I'm sure all will be revealed in time.

Congrats Ian I am very please for you
I trust you will let all your fans here know what the image was
(when you remember it of course )

Cant really comment on Sats weather as I was out of area most of the day
but it certainly is hisssing down ( technical term) here today!

I know, I know, I know - entirely my own fault :bonk::bonk::bonk: :)

btw I don't get hangovers either (also feeling smug! :D)

... and wet!!! :D Lots of lovely rain still hissing down! I like your grasp of technical terms. ;)

Jean

And over here, it's still very dry (and breezy). The sun even tried to break through half an hour ago.

I think I should change the title of this thread to "Kent (and perhaps Essex) Versus The Rest Of The UK" when it comes to our weather! :D

Hi Ian. Had a great time at London today despite the occasional dry spell

At least you got it right for my mums birthday. Your predictions are more right than wrong from what I've seen.

Shame we weren't a few miles away in the sun! Didn't get any good weather pics today. I shall keep trying though. Can't wait to see yours when you find it :)

. Your predictions are more right than wrong from what I've seen.

I've been following Ian's cast's for awhile and yep he is pretty damned accurate,
he predicted the snow this winter (and last come to that)
before the "paid liars" as my mate in the USA likes to call them :D
And was pretty damned accurate as to when and how much

Heh, cheers guys! :D  :naughty:

NOW it's turning wet 'n' wild over here! The rain isn't that heavy but it looks so much like a proper autumn's evening in that near-storm force wind! Certainly blowing a hooey out there.

Going to turn in now, hope my motorbike is still standing upright when I wake up first thing in the morning. :help:

Good call on the naming.

Still, I would like the weather girls to stay. I'd just like them to tell us what Ian says.

Ian, don't think I don't appreciate the cartoons, its just...!

Glad you finally got some Ian
I'm sick and tired of blowing ours your way :D

Its been "almost" autumnal here all day
I'm sorry that I seemed to have missed the summer though :(
I guess I must have nodded off :D

Sounds good to me! ;):D

same here! We're blaming family from North Wales who are visiting for a week. They've brought the wet stuff with them, because they're fed up with it up there.

Can't wait to see how much water we've collected at the allotment today. Sad, eh?

Jean

1st (and last) time I went to wales it never stopped raining the whole week I was there :shake:

Both good Ian but the 1st one is even better IMO

Mornin' all. A rather moist and damp start to the morning . . .

. . . and as for the weather.

 :nono: :suspect: :D

Now, is this what is meant by a "mini twister"?

You can tell I'm now starting to run out of materials. :help: :naughty:

Eggs? Yum, yum - cooked and on a plate with a pile of bacon, all ready for butty making! :D

Wales isn't always wet (we used to live there) - it's just usually wet. At one time Wales was dry every Sunday. Ooops, sorry, that was to do with the pubs being closed on Sundays - nothing to do with the weather. :naughty:

It's dull and overcast but not raining this morning. Lots of lovely puddles though. Just going to splash through some with the dogs (they hate water )

They both made me chuckle, Ian. The second one was a bit too realistic - me on a windy day for sure.

Looks like a bad spin to me...:coat:

:D  I did wonder how long before someone got wind of it. :suspect: :D

Hope everyone are having a good day so far. Just found out that the three Red Arrows photo I took last Saturday evening are going to get printed (hopefully) in the local rag.

I'm slowly getting there!

And the cartoon wasn't that bad either :D
Damp start to this morning here as well
darkening clouds meant a bit of a downpour around mid morning,
but thankfully the hawk was tucked up in the 4x4 when it hit
We just caught the edge of it, so it didn't last long

for not liking Wales :D

Hehe, cheers, Cobra. Although it is high time I should do a fresh new one for the photography cartoon thread.

It is drying up over here but still rather on the dull and gloomy side (as per my forecast - the Met Office went for a sunny afternoon here at Kent but I couldn't see that happening), although it is trying ever so hard to brighten up juuuust a little bit.

Met office forecast cloud here today but no rain
seems they screwed up yet again :D
Its all dry here now.

Cumulus clouds above, mostly white and fluffy
but there is the odd one or two with dark edges to them.

I doubt that they will produce any more moisture though ?

Might become large enough to produce the odd one or two cheeky light showers over the Western side of the UK, but it's really the far North of Scotland that will stay cloudy and rainy all day. For the rest of the UK it's a case of cloudy stuff - with clear breaks for the lucky few.

Mornin' all you awakenin' souls from what is quite a bright and sunny Folkestone.

Hope you will make the most of all this all-too-brief spell of summer-like conditions for today. :naughty:

Morning Ian. T-shirt and shorts on the bike today :D

Hoping for more of the same later so I can test out my new CPL filter!

I can do that  :D

You're on then!!

Great for photography. And locals could always get a drink on Sundays - it was just the pubs closed to keep the English sober, I think!!:lol::lol:

Ian - delighted to hear about your red arrows photos - What a great week you're having.:clap::clap:

Bright and sunny here this morning as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a dry day on Saturday for the wedding.

I hope you mean my test shots Jean!

I think it's still sunny here but I'm sat in the middle of a very grey looking office and can't see outside :(

Please tell me I'm not the only one who can't enjoy this lovely weather?

As for the weekend's weather, I'm afraid it doesn't look good at all. Very unsettled, windy and showery right across the UK, possible storm force winds over Scotland. If anything, it's going to feel more like October than June.
Of course, it's still quite a long way off but the early signs aren't that encouraging.

You don't like me now, do you? ;)

Hi Gary, actually, it looks either a "H" when the photo is viewed the right way off. Or an "I" when viewed sideways.

We do like you Ian, despite the weather cause at least you tell us what is coming and we can prepare.I've been out taking pictures of a poppy field( loads of them) so I can always stay in a edit them all if the weather is awful at the weekend. We have had some rain here in Essex ( not today or yesterday) but we need more.

:) And I sat out in the front garden for ages today, and got nicely tanned! My lawn is now looking a lot healthier for it nowadays so things are slowly returning back to normal on that front.

Back to business in hand, I have been studying the model charts and have come to this conclusion.

It does look like a small but very active "break off" low pressure system will be crossing eastwards over the Southern half of England between 6 pm Friday evening and finally exiting the far South East on Saturday 12 pm.
What'll that do is to produce strong gusty winds on it's southern flank, so gusts of up to 60 mph along the South Coast will be possible in that time frame.
It's really the wind that is the main issue rather than the rain itself so you may have to be prepared for that.

Sunday does look like being brighter with sunshine at first but will stay cool and fresh and then heavy showers willl quickly pop up under a cool and unstable airmass in the wake of that low pressure system.

Sorry to be a harbinger of gloom and doom on what should be the best part of the Summer season but that is our dear ol' UK climate for you.
Of course, regarding this forecast, it is quite a long way off in meteorological terms and could still all change, but that's the signs I've been getting this afternoon and so had to bring it all up.

PS: Note how I've changed the title of this thread. Again. :D

BURN THE HERETIC

Nice day today bright sunny and light breeze, and once the thermals developed it was nice flying weather (apart from the lazy SOB not wanting too :D)

Whats the prognosis for the full lunar eclipse tomorrow night Ian?

Hi Cobra, I'm still pink and stinging after having sat out in the garden for hours today.
As for the lunar eclipse sighting. I'm afraid that, too, doesn't look too good at all due to quite a fair ol' bit of cloud covering most of the UK by tomorrow evening (as that's when the moon will be rising and at the same time showing off the lunar eclipse).
It seems at least 75% of the UK will miss out on seeing the event due to that cloud cover. Perhaps those living over some Eastern parts of England and the South East stand the best chance, but even so confidence is very low.
If you do get to see the lunar eclipse in all it's glory then consider yourself to be very, very lucky.

OUCH !:(

Thanks  but b****r!
BTW Ian,
I never could figurer out the Lunar orbits, is there an easy way of doing this?

ie Sun comes up in the East (back garden) goes down in the West (front garden) easy
But that bloody moon thing just seems to pop up where it likes, sometimes its really low and other times really high

It could be the way your trousers hang around your legs, perhaps you might need a new belt? :D :naughty:

Being serious, I'm not really into astronomy as such but I think the moon rises higher in the sky in the winter, but lower in the summer, and it orbits the earth once every nearly 28 days. But because it does it with such regularity it is perfectly possible to predict the time and position of moon rises and moon sets and the height in the sky at any time of the year for the next 200 years. Even right down to high and low tides and heights.

If only meteorology is as simple as that, but then again where is the challenge in that.

That is a lovely picture, you can't go wrong with a decent sunset (and sunrise) but I like the way you used the trees to provide a natural framework.

Indeed, it may be a while before we get our next bit of warm weather. There are tentative signs of things settling down as we go into the end bit of June but that's a long way off.

Just had a cracking 10 days in Norfolk, just a couple of showers, but nothing to keep us in the motorhome. Today it was back to the Peak District where our neighbours tell us they've had lousy weather. Certainly no water shortage here!
