The Great Meteorological Thread

The rain certainly hammered down this morning! But it has turned out to be a nice evening.

Indeed, it has been very much the same here at Folkestone. Dull and drizzly in the morning, then a burst of heavy rain in the afternoon before leading to this in the afternoon.

But of interest is that my location has picked up 58 mm of rain so far this month. That's more than three times than the whole of February put together! It is also more than the March average of 40 mm.

Mornin' all you awakenin' souls from a very sunny and already warm Folkestone.
Does look like there is a fair amount of mist and fog about inland at dawnbreak but that will quickly burn away under the rising sun. However, sea mist and fog may continue to roll in from the North Sea to affect some Eastern coastal areas.
But other than all that, enjoy your day as temperatures could well just about touch the '70 F mark for the first time in 2012 somewhere inland over the South East today.

I've got 9C outside and the sun's trying to break through. Seems to be brightening all the time :)
Hardly any wind, a very slight breeze.
Roker beach web cam. This is about 1.5 miles north from me.

Just had a peek at the web cam, ooo, it does look rather bleak there. Hopefully the sunshine we have here at Kent will work it's way towards your end as we go through the day.

It "looks" lovely out there with that soft hazy sunshine and got some spring-like photos of the harbour using the soft light, but the on shore sea breeze coming in from what is still quite a cold English Channel is pegging temperatures down at 11.8 C here at the Harbour.
But a number of locations over the South East had indeed touched the 20 C mark this afternoon with Northholt reached 21 C (70F).

So, does anyone else think snow's a comin'?

Hi Marcel and thanks for giving this thread the kiss of life. :D

Here is an excerpt from my award-winning Cloud Master forecast blog (but slightly fine tuned after having had another look at the charts):

TOMORROW (Tuesday) and REST OF WEEK: Tomorrow will be cold, windy and cloudy with outbreaks of rain, sleet and wet snow for most of the UK.
It does look like there will be some persistent and sometimes heavy snow over the high ground of Scotland, but fallng as heavy rain nearer to sea level. However, further south over England and Wales, it willl be cloudy with mostly light rain.
On Wednesday, the band of general cloud cover, rain and snow will become more confined to the South East as the lot moves southwards. There may be some snow over the Pennines and Chilterns. A strong NE wind will make it feel quite raw.
Sunny spells and wintry showers will follow behind over Western and Northern parts.
However it will remain cold for this time of year with widespread and quite sharp frosts by night as skies become clearer on Wednesday nght.

It will tend to become drier and brighter for most parts as we go into the second half of the week but will stay rather cold with a continued threat of widespread night frost.

EASTER BREAK: Good Friday and Saturday looks like being dry and settled for most parts, especially the South.
But then becoming wet and changeable again on Easter Sunday and into Bank Holiday Monday.
Temperatures will be at average or below average values for most of the time.

So, in short, it is going to be quite a shock to the system as we go into the middle part of the week after that spell of warm and sunny weather.

Well, it goes without saying what a huge contrast in today's weather what with the snowy conditions over the North and East of Scotland and then there's the persistent rain over Northern England . . .

. . . and here I am typing this post while sitting on a beach chair in my sunny back yard at Costa Del Kent. :D

.

Thanks for that  :D

It started raining quite late afternoon, here then followed by hailstones,
then more rain and its still at it as I type.

I spent most of the day in sunny Hampshire though, light rain showers
from mid day. They never amounted to much.

Hosepipe ban / water shortage? In the UK?
:D

And over here it has been like this for most of today so far, along with calm winds . . .

Actually, if you are experiencing a sense of deja vu while reading this post - this is exactly what started this thread off this time a year ago.

It looks like the "April Showers" have hit with a vengeance.
Now where did I put my hose pipe?

Oh wait a minute I don't need to water the garden flood plain :D

:D Holy thread revival Batman!

But, you're right! It's really all gone back to very traditional old skool stuff with the classic April Showers thing - and not a moment too soon.
Remember how this thread got started this time last year? That was when I was lamenting at the total lack of rainfall.

It's going to be a while before things will warm up properly. Looking at the medium range charts (up to 14 days ahead) it's sticking to the idea of continuing the cool and unsettled theme for the rest of April and into the first week of May.
I also have been saying how this Summer may turn out warmer than average, but thundery spells could also be a regular feature. I hope so as I do like my night time lightning at the tail end of a heatwave!

Well its got a couple or so weeks to run for the full year,
seems a shame not to document a full 12 months

Single-figure daytime temperatures are wearing a bit thin :(
Coupled with seemingly incessant rain this month, (at least up here) it's not looking good for my annual May-Eve camp in the woods.

Mornin' all from what is still a dry and bright Folkestone. :D

Going by the various reports and what I'm seeing on the interweb, it does look like there is that Kent/rest of the UK split in terms of rainfall.

Anyway, feel free to check out my Cloud Master forecast blog: http://thecloudmaster.webs.com/

Lucky you!
I'm off on a 14 mile hike in the Brecon Beacons tomorrow; I've packed my snorkel.

I hope all went according to plan?

Its like bloody October out there as I type.
Very wet, very windy and a chilly 46oF :shake:

Hi Chris! Long time no hear.

It has been raining here since 2 pm (now 9 pm) - and yet many parts of Germany had reached 25 to 32 C today.
But in actual fact, it is that warm air sitting over central Europe interacting with the cold winter-like air still sitting over the UK that is causing all this rain.

What a huge contrast to what it was like this time last year - when this thread was first started.

Whoops, wrong button. Sorry 'bout that. A little out of practice here. :D

Sorted ;)
And its those damned Euro types nicking the weather then ?

Huh!

:D

The sun has broken through as the back end of this weather system finally arrives here at Folkestone.
However, since it's all very moist and damp, I can see wisps of steam rising up from roofs and road surfaces.
Temperatures is climbing up as that fresh NE wind switches to a light SE, currently 10.3 C but I expect it to be higher than that later on in the afternoon.
I might find myself wanting to wear shorts as the afternoon sun streams into my west-facing hobby room making it all muggy indoors.

Its still very much "baby weather" (wet and windy :D)
Here in good old MK.

I'm struggling to remember a day this year that was worse! Heavy rain, occasionally horizontal in the Easterly wind coming straight off the sea. Cold, barely scraping +5°C; and that's without the wind-chill.
I've not been out and have no intention, either lol. So much for my May-Eve camping trip lol.
Yet tomorrow's Met Office says dry, almost warm (+9) and sunny :)

I hope all went according to plan?

The walk went well thanks!
Despite the forecast, it was dry and the sun even shone during our lunch stop.

However, when I checked the Met Office on Saturday night it was one of the worst forecasts I've ever seen.
Storm force winds, heavy rain, flooding and even snow. For the whole 24hour forecast, not just a passing front!
Some of us were camping. A tree came down near the camp site and although I was OK, some of the others tents suffered damage.

Consequently, only two of us went to have a look at the Pen-y-Fan ridge.
Even getting to the car park turned out to be a challenge with wind blown debris and ice covering the roads.
The walk itself was utterly horrendous, this image is on the lower slopes when we were nearly back at the car. Can't tell from the photo, but it was hailing and sleeting heavily when this was taken.

That was a memorable weekend!

Bloody hell
It looks like its been snowing !
Glad you had a good time despite the weather

Damn, that looks cold! I broke out into goosepimples just by looking at that but thanks for showing those photos.
After that wet morning, it turned out pleasantly bright with decent sunny spells this afternoon, the lighter wind meant it felt very warm in the direct sunshine.
Looks like most parts (apart from the North) will have a decent enough day tomorrow with some sunny spells and temperatures close to normal values (16 C to 19 C), but then after a thundery-type Tuesday, it goes downhill over Southern England with low cloud, drizzle and cold winds coming in from the North Sea for the rest of the week. The North may actually get to pick up the best of the sunshine but still will be rather on the cold side.

Two beautiful sunny days up here in snechy land, most unusual as it was my weekend off :)

Indeed, ironically most of Scotland stayed dry and bright the whole weekend - especially the further north where it was nearest to an area of high pressure.

It finally stopped raining, and the skies cleared about an hour before sundown.
Time to water the garden

Now where did I put that hose pipe ?

:D

It was still raining at 23:00 but it's stopped now, giving way to quite a heavy mist.
Temperature's up a bit, though :) 7°C
