The G1.. finally getting appreciated?

chillin' with my other hobby..

Well I've only gone and done it.

£375 from Curry's with the 6MAY voucher, plus £50 cashback, plus hopefully 3% Quidco.

If I can sell the 14-45 for £150-£160 then I'll have a brand new G1 body for around £150 - cheaper than the EVF at most places.

:)

nice light! I'm looking forward to the 20mm arriving.

In the meantime, I've just picked up a minty Olympus OM 300mm f/4.5 prime, and I'm waiting for an OM adapter. The 300/4.5 is one of those 'sharp wide open' legends that's still available new to buy [check out bhphotovideo.com if you fancy a new one!]

Manual focus, but a 600mm f/4.5 should be very cool indeed. And, all in, it's cost £170! The beauty of the system is the legacy glass choice - and the increased depth of field means that you can shoot wide open and still get acceptable depth of field. For me, this is a huge advantage... f/4.5 light levels, and just under f/9 depth of field...

I'm even looking at swarovski scopes and wondering about 1200mm - 1500mm digiscoping, but that's for another day!

thanks. what OM adapter have you bought? i have a zuiko 50mm f1.8 and a zuiko 135mm f3.5 which i would like to start using on the G1...

Agree with the op. Love my G1 and can't wait to take it to Mexico on holiday where i hope to take some great shots

Took my new G1 on its first outing on Bank Holiday Monday. Went to a classic car show at Gawsworth Hall in Macclesfield. Weather wasn't great but got few pics in between the showers and sunshine. Here few of my favs. Hope you like them too, cheers, John

I would love a Porsche Speedster. Reminds me of the film Doc Hollywood ;-)

Lovely sharp shots !

Just got my G1 - first impressions:

+ points

-Flippy screen is great
-Viewfinder is great - def feels better with longer lenses than using the screen
-The grip is also nice to have with longer lenses.

- points
- Tis that bit bulkier than the GF1 which means I don't think I would carry it around in a jacket pocket - that doesn't bother me for what I got it for though
- The adjustment wheel on the front doesn't feel in a very comfortable position for me, maybe I'll get used to it.

I tried to take some photos of a couple of the many grandchildren on Wednesday morning. To take decent composition I tried to get low down grrr could I do it ......no chance.:bonk:

The upshot being that I took the GF1 and the EVF back to where I bought it a couple of weeks ago. They gave me a full refund and I used that to purchase a G1, + the 20mm lens to go with the 14-45mm I already had.

The G1 is of course bulkier than the GF1 however for me the G1 with the very good EVF and the swivelling LSD screen is a far more practical package.

Thank you all for the kind comments, yes really enjoyed using the camera on it's first outing. The EVF is the reason I went for the G1 rather than the GF1. Eventually I will buy the GF1 with the 20mm;) G1+14-45mm & GF1+20mm perfect combo for travelling this summer in the Far East:lol:

Same here, I do find the front wheel uncomfortable to use,I think its positioned slightly too low on the G1. I believe the new G2 has the wheel at the back rather than at the front of camera?

+1... I much prefer the wheel on the back of the GF-1, but I guess I will get used to it.

Hope the sun comes out this weekend... dying to get out and put my G1 through its paces.

I found the wheel on the rear of the GF1 a little awkward, the wheel on the front of the G1 is much more to my liking.

Good job we are not all the same isn't it, life would be so boring.

Watch out for the mode dial going off position chaps, it's nothing like as stiff as on the gf-1 and when I pop it in my anorak pocket with the 20mm it always rotates.
Must design a modification.

John

First effort with the G1 (and 14-45)

Hi grum, love the photo and like the choice of aspect ratio :-)

I agree with everyone about the G1, I think its often overlooked by people looking to buy the big name brands (Canon and Nikon), but for the money its a lot of camera, real bargain especially now.

Great sunset! Did you use a tripod or hand held the shot? Wished I could get out more to shoot some sunsets! Cheers. John

Think it was handheld - I did set a tripod up but I think this is one of the ones I snapped off before setting it up.

It was 1/20 3.5 100

Here's another that was def handheld

1/25 5.6 100

Couple more from out in my garden just now with the 45-200mm - this lens is MUCH better on the G1 than the GF1.

Cheers folks :)

Yeah It is a nice time - just about to go out again. Sunrise is my favourite time but that requires getting up horribly early!

BTW that last sunset pic looks like I've added loads of saturation but I've actually toned it down slightly!

edit: out again last night with the G1

Beautiful! Where are those taken? Nice to 'just get out' and take some pics indeed. Here's one from this morning in a local park, not brilliantly sharp, but I like it. Still 'learning' with the G1:love:

Oooh nice - is that the 50mm 3.5? Been thinking about picking on of them up. I have some Canon FD extension tubes too.

Alphahoho - cheers! - most of my shots are of Lancaster, where I live, and the surrounding area.

 Some cracking images in this thread from this little camera. Cant believe the price its going for now either, seems a bargain!..How does the image quality compare to a dslr say d5000 or d90 with a kit lens (18-55mm).

I've never used a DSLR much at all - but from what I can gather at 'normal' ISOs and in 'normal' situations the quality is just as good - shooting at higher ISOs and things that require faster AF you won't find as good.

The 20mm and 14-45 lenses are really very good though imo.

Thanks I have seen sme nice images from the 20mm and the 14-45mm gets good praise.Just curious as to just how close this comes to dslrs.
Anyone here compared shots from both side by side..

Is there a particular characteristic you're curious about? The G1 houses a Four Thirds sensor i.e. the same in Olympus DSLRs such as E-520 or £1k E-3.

In the right hands and under the right conditions, I suspect the results from the G1 will be indistinguishable from any Four Thirds or APS-C DSLR.

For pixel peeping side-by-side comparisons, DPReview have a comprehensive review of the G1 and pit it against DSLRs - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmcg1/page22.asp.

The 20mm pancake lens is a peach and is incredibly sharp, from my experience.

i got rid of my d200 and all the lenses and i am very happy with the choice i made. i started a 365 this year and realised that i had only taken all my kit out once since jan 1st. mainly i used my smallest body (d40) with a 35mm f1.8 or my d200 with an old 28mm prime. a lot of my shots were taken with a coolpix (soon to be replaced with an LX3) because it was in my pocket...
i do not feel that my pictures now suffer in comparison with my earlier work, the quality of the G1 compares very well. i am happier now because i actually carry my kit in my pocket/bag and its not sitting at home gathering dust. i really believe that for my needs the less kit the better is the way to go...

Yes that is the one, I am wondering about getting the 24mm and giving it a go.

Stuart

Its worth taking a memory card to Jessops, taking some shots and taking some with an SLR and comparing. I sold my D300 and pro glass and have not missed it one bit.:D

More cheesy sunset pics from me :)

 Thanks for the replies all...I think I may well take a card into jessops and have a play with one.Its mainly going to be used for posed shots of reptiles in a light tent(Look at my posts and you'll see what I mean) So low light isnt an issue.I am currently using a fuji s200 and it performs well but just feel its missing something.I did used to use a d200 and miss it tbh but if the g1 can improve over the results I am getting with the fuji I would be a happy bunny!
edit to say nice shots Grum!
