The song about rio at the san marino game was this:

"Build a bonfire, build a bonfire, put Rio on the top, put Anton in the middle, then burn the f****** lot"

Can someone explain how that song is racist?

I thought it was aimed at rio for pulling out of the squad then flying out to pundit anyway. The anton bit is simply by association and to fit something catchy and relevant in the middle?

Am I wrong - is there something about bonfires and black people that I am missing?

It has been claimed the song had racist overtones because Anton was racially abused by former England captain John Terry.

There's no connection to race that I can see in the song either

It seems a little bit like they've gone "oooh they're singing about two black people and haven't mentioned a white person... it must be race related". If there was a racist incident then by all means make us play our next game behind closed doors or whatever is being proposed, but if that's all it was then I fail to see how race has any part in it. In addition, the song itself is sung a lot at football matches with various player's names in there who are unpopular at that point, and often lyrics like scousers and cockneys are sung instead.

but on that basis any song now sang about anton could be considered racist because he was once racially abused by another player?

that doesnt make much sense to me!

Agree. It's pathetic. Rio deserves everything he gets. He also used a racist term on twitter don't forget.

Agreed. Not sure how it is racist either. The Rio pulling out of the squad story has been well overplayed by the media and I think that's due to not much else happening.

Am I concerned that he might not be in the WC2014 squad? Not at all. Yes, he's had a decent season for Utd, but we've got to develop a centre back partnership that isn't made up of injury prone, 30+ has beens.

Doh - forgot to set my ff team and it's got lots of non starters. Ho hum.

Haven't followed the England / Rio tittle tattle but from what I've read on here I see no racist issues

What the hell Chris Foy is thinking in this reading game I don't know. Leigertwood could have easily seen two yellows for late and dangerous tackles, plus a stonewall penalty for a foul on Giroud (not by the same player, to be clear).

Believe it or not Gervinho has been sensational so far.

 the penalty we eventually get is for a foul out of the box after 2 stonewallers were missed inside the area. Really well done Foy & Co.!

It's been a very pleasing game though. 1 goal + 2 assists for Gervinho, a cracking midfield performance from Cazorla and Ramsey, Koscielny proves he's hands down our best CB, and Fabianski continues to look solid. The only concern was Monreal going off with an injury after colliding with the post. Hopefully it's only precautionary.

I'll place my bet now that MOTD highlights the incorrect penalty but doesn't mention the 2 that should have been.

Average from United today but most importantly, another 3 points on the board.

17 wins from the last 19 league games.

First side to win 25 of the first 30 games.

Are you going to concede the title is won yet phil?

*waits for joe to say he's right for stating the odds-on outcome*

He couldn't have been right.

His 'claim' was it was over when it wasn't.

Those who claimed United 'would' go on to win the league - can be right though - asuming it does happen ;)

Always backtracking Phil. I called it way back when and I was right, just admit it. I'll be shortly preparing the humble pie for everyone, all you'll need is knives and forks and your words

Not that old humble pie nonsense again

I thought everybody had explained it to you before........

I'll come back and quote you all at the end and revel once again in being right. I'll bring knives, forks and some humble pie and all you'll need to add is your words :naughty:

You can come back and quote us at the end of the season but it will mean nothing as the end of the season is not game 25.

You can try and weasel out of it all you like Phil, you can evn try and twist my words if you like, it ain't gonna fly! I didnt say the season is over. I said the title race was over.

What on earth am I trying to weasel out of ? - you're the one making predictions.

You're saying the title race is over at game 25 and how at the end of the season you'll quote us all and tell us how you were right etc etc

Most people would predict United for the title now. That's not much of a prediction to make given the lead they have. All I'm saying is if they do go and win it - it wasn't won or lost at the 25 game stage.

Top 4 looks wide open now between Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and who knows - perhaps Everton hanging in there after today.

Blimey! They are in real trouble and getting reeled in fast.

There is often a team that slides down the table, could be them!

Think Wigan are safe, outside the drop zone and with the clocks changing tonight they should keep on winning!!!

Reading & QPR down, Sunderland or Norwich for me, think Villa will scrape a win or 2 they need.

Just watching MotD, and I don't think that they said O'Neill was responsible for any of Sunderland's problems. I think they even tried to make an excuse of John Robertson 'not' being his assistant this time as a reason for the for a poor Sunderland side.

Surely O'Neill has some responsibility for Sunderland's position, 2 points above the relegation places, with 7 games to go?

If he had stayed, and took them down, would they then admit O'Neill had something to do with it do think. ;)

It's a tough one to call isn't it

QPR and Reading are all but gone for me too.

Villa and Wigan have a couple of wins on the bounce under their belts, Sunderland, Norwich and Stoke are on the slide. You can't exclude Newcastle either.

Week in and week out they've been praising him despite his terrible run. It may well not be all his fault but I'm not sure what he's ever done to earn his reputation as an amazing manager. Some Arsenal fans are calling for him to replace Wenger. They're barking mad.

2 goals inside 25 minutes of football (this game and the previous PL game), 2 assists today. That's a better return on goals than RVP in his last 9 games ;)

I take it that's tounge in cheek?

Even he couldn't miss for his goal, while his 2nd assist was good, his 1st assist was the only option and the most basic pass you could get. Missed 2 sitters and it was against the worst team in the league.

He is about as effective as the Cypriot banking system.

A few years ago maybe but not now. He just seems to have lost his spark.

The statistics, though true, were tongue in cheek because he's obviously not the same class of RVP (despite the fact he's trying to claim a goal where the ball was heading wide of even the corner flag! ). I've been a big critic of his in the past but I'm not beyond giving a player praise when they've earned it and today he certainly did. He was hungry, motivated and intelligent in a way that we've only seen glimpses of recently. His great dribbling was on display, a lot more end product than we've seen before and his positional play was top notch, finding space all the time and driving into the box desperate to receive the ball.

The same goes for Ramsey, who in recent games has stepped up immensely and has largely been a bit of an unsung hero for us in midfield. Never hides, always committed, and recently been exceptionally reliable for us.

Perhaps you could just stop hating all things Arsenal for a game and actually give some praise to the players when they put in a shift that produce the goods.

Honestly, I'm beginning to wonder if you're one of those fans willing us to lose to prove yourself right and help Wenger on his way out

I have never had a problem with Ramsey, as a backup mid (only had an issue when he plays right wing or something silly like that). Have also been singing Giroud's praises all season, so there are things I do like... Jenkinson too, I rate szczesny as well, and would love to see more of our younger players given chances, Coqulin especially.
