It doesn't make me laugh but I do find it strange that pundits interpret ref's decisions a certain way and talk about what the ref 'should have' done etc

None of the Real players were expecting a red or putting pressure on the ref. Neither of the managers expected a red (although Fergie hasn't said as much :lol:) and just about everybody apart from Roy Keane thinks it was harsh.

I don't think it was deserving of a red and I think that's the way most folk feel however that's just my opinion based on how I think the laws should be.

If you actually look at the wording of the laws - it was a red card (so the ref called it right) but then Dermot Gallagher says the ref got it wrong.

I agree Rio was a bit OTT at the end.

Giggs looked good for his 1000th game (you wouldn't see him acting like Rio) and I was pretty pleased with the tactics and the performance apart from the period of Real dominance following the sending off.

Tonight Keane had a point but he's renowned for his bitterness towards United.

Yeah, he's kind of like your answer to Tony Adams or Stewart Robson. He did have a fair point as you though. Going by the letter of the law it was arguably the correct decision so people can't really say United were 'cheated' when so little was made of it by the Madrid players and it was all the officials' doing. It was certainly strict, but quite justifiable.

On balance I do feel that the correct team went through. At the least it sparked a rather dull 2nd leg in to life so it was good for a neutral like myself.

Yeah - Keane would probably have argued that Nani should have stayed on if everybody else said he should have seen red. He likes to take the opposite view and if that means fighting the majority and Fergie then all the better.

I think United were doing OK and my concerns over Fergie's team selection were pretty much proven wrong by how well United were doing.

Whilst people will point to the sending off as the turning point I think it was actually Jose's introduction of Modric rather than the 11 v 10 that made the difference.

Fine margins over the two legs - either team could have gone through.

I'm old enough not to be a Ronaldo disciple but I did find myself getting a little bit nostalgic.

Is that right? In which case, I guess even Spurs will be cheering us on. If Chelsea get their act together with a good manager, then that will be the top 3 done and dusted.
 
I think the Nani decision could have gone either way, though I think it looked worse because he seemed to push off Arbeloa.

There should be some action taken against the Utd players, especially Ferdinand, for their harassing of the Ref at the end imho.


I'm not a fan of Roy Keane, but I loved the way he just cut the controversy and brewing indignation off at the knee (very Roy Keane like ;)) by saying the decision was correct. :lol:

The placings are based on the last 5 years so next year, the fact that England had 3 of the 4 semi finalists and both finalists in 2008 counts for nothing.

I think at the moment Spain are top, England are second and Germany are third in the rankings. If Germany overtake England and we drop down to third then there will be no change as all top three ranked nations get to have 4 teams in the competition.

As far as I know it would require England to drop down to 4th place in the rankings. Italy are 4th but are a very long way back.
 
Was dissapointed that man u got kicked out on one level - I had a £10 bet on them winning the CL. But I did so enjoy seeing ferguson get so upset, I thought he was going to explode he was that furious.

Not sure how doing a flying kick with studs straight into the midrift and a leg that high could have been anything but a red card personally. Are flying karate kicks allowed now on the pitch?

A bit harsh. Dermot Gallagher said that if he was ref he would not have sent him off. Aside from Keane, not many others thought it was an out and out red. He was actually going to control the ball rather do a 'karate kick'.

Put it this way, if that had been Gerrard or Suarez, would you have been happy with a red card shown?

no i would have bleeted and moaned of controversy theories exactly the same as all the man u fans are doing now, I would have blamed the ref as the reason we got kicked out of the CL when in fact the ref just sent someone off, it would have actually been us who lost the game - but I wouldn't admit that, I would have said it was all the refs fault etc

Pretty much would have acted the same way - except we wouldn't have been able to laugh at alex ferguson. :lol:

If it had been Suarez involved, there would be a fair few more agreeing with the decision, and some of them would be calling long bans. :shrug:


I thought it was funny Ferguson pushing the other chap out of the way on the stairs to get to the edge of the pitch. :lol:
 
Fergie just reminds me of my 3 year old daughter when she doesn't get her own way - except she doesn't have as red a nose
 
The most cringeworthy part was how Mourinho put aside all his macho, self-confidence that I love seeing and instead sucked up to United. I'm guessing odds have shortened even more for Mourinho taking the job after Fergie now!

Well Mourinho and Fergie are big buddies so who knows.

Whilst Bobby Charlton said he was a very good manager, he made it pretty clear that he didn't think Mourinho was suited to United.

It was so obvious he only said that as he is being lined up for the take over.

Very disrespectful to his team. You'd never hear fergie say that and rightly so.

What do we make of UEFA charging United with not fulfilling their media obligations?

On one hand I understand, but on the other if he'd came out and said what he wanted to he'd have got charged for something instead anyway. If he was to avoid a fine he'd have had to say the same old generic comments; "the boys tried hard", "it just wasn't our night", "the ref's given it and that's all that matters". They penalise honest opinions and legitimate criticisms so much that every press interview is the same bland cliches anyway. He's avoided one trap and fallen straight into another.

It doesn't really matter what he says, he's obliged to do a post match - a lot of money is spent by sponsors to get there logo on screen etc. He should have just turned out and given some fluffy rubbish but knowing Fergie he would have had a rant so it was probably the lesser of two evils.

As for UEFA having an 'investigation'. What's to investigate ? Unless Mike Phealan was actually Fergie in a baldy cap then he didn't show up. Fine him and get on with something worthwhile.

Typical FIFA concentrating on the pointless things. Instead of acting upon diving and performance of refs they mess about with this. But then, FIFA tell the refs what the result should be. Chelsea v barca, arsenal v barca...
 
Howard Webb has the Man Utd vs Chelsea game, so expect any bad decisions to be 'evened out' pretty soon.

I read somewhere that also at least two players have to do a post match interview, and none of the United players did, so they'll be fined for that as well.

Rio off the hook for his applause as well.

See I think Rio's sarcastic applause is more important to deal with, but just like when Bendtner displayed his paddy power boxer shorts, they seem far more interested in protecting their sponsors than actually addressing issues in the game.

It would be hard to really do anything about that appluase though. How could anyone prove that he wasn't actually aplauding the ref.

Of course he wasn't, but can it be proven?

How much proof is needed? I remember from the Suarez case it was something other than beyond all reasonable doubt as it would be in a criminal case.
