Ooo that's bad luck @ChrisJ_SLH - hope they are better soon. Ribs can take a while.....

Yes, a couple of years ago a young lad ran out in front of me when I was cycling. Over the bars I went landing in a tangle of me and bike (clipless pedals). Similar thing, cracked rib. Took weeks to sort itself out. Fortunately it didn't stop me running (after medical advice).

This time I have a lot of superficial bruising where I hit the side of the bath and my lower left rib is very sore to the touch. It is improving though and pain relief is working well. I've managed another gentle 5k tonight without discomfort so I plan on keeping the mileage and pace down and taking it easing until they are sorted. At least my achilles is behaving itself.

I really hate being crocked...:(
 
Well, I managed one run after the all clear for the Achilles and then had a comedy slip in the shower reaching for the towel and ended up bruising/cracking some ribs. Great, just great. I've managed a 5k since (thanks ibuprofen) but wouldn't want to push my luck with anything longer until they improve. Fed up doesn't begin to describe it.
I've been back in the gym recently. Saturday night had to help bring some heavy suitcases into the house. Rather than doing outdoors, I decided to park the car in the garage and go through the back (means no one knows what's being brought in/out of the house). In the cramped space, I had to lift each suitcase and twist in a tight spot, then drag each one upstairs. Whilst the weight wasn't an issue, the bulk was. Anyway, pulled a couple of muscles in my back. Made for an uncomfortable night and meant I couldn't go gym today (had the day off).

Hopefully should settle but nowhere near as bad as injured ribs.

I feel your pain. It doesn't take much does it? Thing is, at the gym we'd all warm up properly before starting a weight session. It never really strikes you as being necessary when doing day to day stuff and then we suffer accordingly.

Perhaps we should start 'The Injury Thread"...

In 25yrs of weight training, I've never warmed up properly in the gym. First set of first exercise has always been my warm up and it's never been a light weight neither. Only injury I ever had wasn't in the gym and that was lifting something heavy and swinging it straight out in front of me with one hand instead of using the other hand to steady it. Pulled something in the front of my shoulder/upper chest. One dose of ultrasound massage and it was all good again.

I've restarted weight lifting last week and went today to do chest/back/biceps workouts. By the time I moved on to cardio on the treadmill, I managed 3 mins of walking interspersed with two one-minute sprints at probably the fastest I've ever run.

Yeah. I thought it was really hard to get in so I entered the ballot. Turns out the ballot is a chance to save €20 on your entry fee.......

You guys must be on a different C25K from me - I'm on week 6 and we don't have to do a 20 min continuous yet. This week is 5 mins walk, 10 run, 30 squats, 5 walk and then 3 X 7 min run with stretches in between. Piece of cake. Plus we have zombies :)

Still can't quite believe yesterday's run though - I was hitting 7 minute miles for the running bit. Which amazes me.

Ah right - just taken a look at it. Interesting - looks like the workouts are half as long as the zombie ones (they average about 43 mins) but build to a brutal 25 mins of running in week 6. Zombies are longer workouts 3 times a week but you don't do a continuous 20 min run until week 8. Also it's only 8 weeks. I like it because you can use your own music.

Planning to run a 5k Parkrun when I get to week 7. I guess I'll need that before my marathon..... :)

Sure. Why not?

Paris is 12th April 2015. London is 26th April 2015. You have to enter London next Tuesday if you want a chance of a ballot place. Paris is somewhat easier to get into but the ballot closes on Monday.

Either of those give me roughly a year to train. Even a long absolute beginner plan is 30 weeks. Every indication is I'll be fine ;)

Of course there's always Chester in November as a warm up. And a chance to get a GFA time to qualify for London :D

Follow a decent plan and there is more than enough time to train. Always good to have a goal. Don't rush things and stay injury free.
 
Remember that marathon I said I might have entered? Yeah, I entered it. And an ultra in 5 months' time. Still waiting to hear on the ballot for London.

And I still haven't run a 5K. I must get on that.

It's a 2.18 mile lap and the time limit is 6 hours. If you complete 1 lap you get a finish time, medal and goody bag (aka "you finished the race!"). If you complete 12 laps you get credited with a marathon distance. If you complete 13 then you've run an ultra.

So IMO it's a really no pressure way to test myself with a bit of company. It's roughly half way between now and Paris. 2.18 miles is doable, right?

Lol, 2.18 miles is definitely doable. 12x 2.18 is also doable. However, it will undoubtedly get a bit boring seeing the scenery repeat so often. IMO, it's a bit of a stretch to call something just over a marathon an ultra though.

As it is half way into your time to train for Paris why not work it into your training program, use it as a dry run so to speak....
 
Yep, I don't consider anything less than 49.9 miles an ultra!

42,196m is an ultra ;) The big boys will no doubt be aiming for 50 - 75 miles minimum.

I'll just be happy with all the great carbs the ultra runners get to eat.

Well...technically 26.3 miles is a marathon since it's longer than a traditional 26.2miles...but still...

Well done with the 5k. 10k next, it will take no time. Either grab yourself a 5 to 10 plan or just steadily increase your distance, 10% per week is a reasonable guideline (but not set in stone). Just don't rush things and get injured.

Then it's time to get some structure into your training routine. Easy short run (recovery), Tempo run, Interval run, and the all important long slow run to get used to the time on your feet and build the stamina.

The ribs are as good as fixed, still a bit sore when I lie on left side in bed but otherwise aren't an issue. The Achilles is largely behaving itself and seems to be at the point where it is better if I run more frequently than less. Starting to feel human again, just need to work on getting the distance back up again now.
 
If I carry on progressing at this rate I'll be beating Mo Farrah by April :)

Leg hardly hurt at all today so I managed 26:22 for the 5K followed by a 2K slow jog home.

Actually, in a couple of weeks I have a race against Mr Farrah. I believe I'm required to give him a head start :D
 
Rightio, week 6 completed, 25 solid minutes of running... I was slow as sin so I only covered 2.2 miles but I'm happy with that.

No sin mate, you are where you are. These pre-conceived notions of what is a decent pace is perplexing. It is totally an individual concern, every one is different. To quote Baz Luhtrmann, "Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself".

 
Rightio, week 6 completed, 25 solid minutes of running... I was slow as sin so I only covered 2.2 miles but I'm happy with that.

"Should I be running faster?" is completely the wrong question. The right one is "Could I have run for 25 mins solid a couple of weeks ago?" Also "How amazing did I feel when I got to the end of 25 mins?". A lot of people quit when they see they have to run for 25 mins - you didn't ;)

In other news, it turns out that repeatedly running when your leg hurts might just be really bad for you. I can hardly walk this morning. Just had to book a physio appointment :(
 
Couch to First Injury in 7 weeks! ;-)

Of all the stupid things I've done in my life I've never really had an injury. Then I try running.....

Physio appointment was fun. I'm not allowed to do any running between now and my first race. 2.5 weeks to go and that could be, um, interesting.....
 
Well chaps, I'm back up to week 7, so my second consecutive run of 25 minutes.
I'm not gonna say it wasn't tough going, particularly the last 10 mins but it's definitely now at the point where believing I can do it is a bit harder than physically doing it.
One issue I do have is my calves are a bit sore, almost like I've had cramp.
Is that normal?

What does it feel like? (Dull ache or sharp pain)

Probably nothing but it could be something (since my foolishness means I can't run for nearly 3 weeks I'm hyper vigilant ATM)

In other news, the Concept2 in the shed still works :) My times are slow but my stamina seems to have improved.

Back of calves, so between ankle and knee, got it a couple of hours after doing a 25 minute run.
Hard to describe the feeling, since it doesn't hurt so much as feel a bit tight... like I say, it feels like I've recently had cramp, but its gone away, ya know?
Its disappeared today, so I'm not overly concerned, but I definitely didn't wanna run myself into a problem.


In other news, the Concept2 in the shed still works :) My times are slow but my stamina seems to have improved.

Cool, whats that? :lol:

sounds like a bit of DOMS to me. Just normal muscle soreness after you've exerted yourself a bit more than usual.


Thats spot on actually, it wasn't much of a hill but it was long, and I have increased in pace slightly.
