I've been back in the gym recently. Saturday night had to help bring some heavy suitcases into the house. Rather than doing outdoors, I decided to park the car in the garage and go through the back (means no one knows what's being brought in/out of the house). In the cramped space, I had to lift each suitcase and twist in a tight spot, then drag each one upstairs. Whilst the weight wasn't an issue, the bulk was. Anyway, pulled a couple of muscles in my back. Made for an uncomfortable night and meant I couldn't go gym today (had the day off).Well, I managed one run after the all clear for the Achilles and then had a comedy slip in the shower reaching for the towel and ended up bruising/cracking some ribs. Great, just great. I've managed a 5k since (thanks ibuprofen) but wouldn't want to push my luck with anything longer until they improve. Fed up doesn't begin to describe it.

Hopefully should settle but nowhere near as bad as injured ribs.
In 25yrs of weight training, I've never warmed up properly in the gym. First set of first exercise has always been my warm up and it's never been a light weight neither. Only injury I ever had wasn't in the gym and that was lifting something heavy and swinging it straight out in front of me with one hand instead of using the other hand to steady it. Pulled something in the front of my shoulder/upper chest. One dose of ultrasound massage and it was all good again.I feel your pain. It doesn't take much does it? Thing is, at the gym we'd all warm up properly before starting a weight session. It never really strikes you as being necessary when doing day to day stuff and then we suffer accordingly.
Perhaps we should start 'The Injury Thread"...
I may have accidentally entered the Paris Marathon.....
Accidentally... *nods knowingly*
I never really managed to progress beyond week 5 of c25k. I couldn't do a continuous 20 min run.
Zombies... sod that for a game of soldiers.
I'm doing the NHS C25K podcast ones, with mistress laura, the sadist.
You've signed up for a marathon but haven't done 5k yet?Ah right - just taken a look at it. Interesting - looks like the workouts are half as long as the zombie ones (they average about 43 mins) but build to a brutal 25 mins of running in week 6. Zombies are longer workouts 3 times a week but you don't do a continuous 20 min run until week 8. Also it's only 8 weeks. I like it because you can use your own music.
Planning to run a 5k Parkrun when I get to week 7. I guess I'll need that before my marathon.....![]()
You've signed up for a marathon but haven't done 5k yet?![]()
Sure. Why not?
Paris is 12th April 2015. London is 26th April 2015. You have to enter London next Tuesday if you want a chance of a ballot place. Paris is somewhat easier to get into but the ballot closes on Monday.
Either of those give me roughly a year to train. Even a long absolute beginner plan is 30 weeks. Every indication is I'll be fine
Of course there's always Chester in November as a warm up. And a chance to get a GFA time to qualify for London![]()
You're going for it Jon! An ultra...Good stuff.
Well kind of.
It's a 2.18 mile lap and the time limit is 6 hours. If you complete 1 lap you get a finish time, medal and goody bag (aka "you finished the race!"). If you complete 12 laps you get credited with a marathon distance. If you complete 13 then you've run an ultra.
So IMO it's a really no pressure way to test myself with a bit of company. It's roughly half way between now and Paris. 2.18 miles is doable, right?
Yep, I don't consider anything less than 49.9 miles an ultra!
Well...technically 26.3 miles is a marathon since it's longer than a traditional 26.2miles...but still...42,196m is an ultraThe big boys will no doubt be aiming for 50 - 75 miles minimum.
I'll just be happy with all the great carbs the ultra runners get to eat.
After this I vote your next challenge:
....marathon des sarbles.
Just completed my C25K - so I can no longer say I've never run a 5K
Wasn't aiming for a time as I just wanted to get it done and set a benchmark but 29:07 made me happy. That means my marathon will take me 4h38 - so if I can take 79 mins off that I'll be happy![]()
Well done with the 5k. 10k next, it will take no time. Either grab yourself a 5 to 10 plan or just steadily increase your distance, 10% per week is a reasonable guideline (but not set in stone). Just don't rush things and get injured.
Then it's time to get some structure into your training routine. Easy short run (recovery), Tempo run, Interval run, and the all important long slow run to get used to the time on your feet and build the stamina.
Rightio, week 6 completed, 25 solid minutes of running... I was slow as sin so I only covered 2.2 miles but I'm happy with that.

In other news, it turns out that repeatedly running when your leg hurts might just be really bad for you. I can hardly walk this morning. Just had to book a physio appointment![]()
Couch to First Injury in 7 weeks! ;-)
One issue I do have is my calves are a bit sore, almost like I've had cramp.
Is that normal?
Depends.
Where is it? (Front, back or side).
When do you get it? (After, day after, during)
What does it feel like? (Dull ache or sharp pain)
Probably nothing but it could be something (since my foolishness means I can't run for nearly 3 weeks I'm hyper vigilant ATM)
In other news, the Concept2 in the shed still worksMy times are slow but my stamina seems to have improved.

Been running uphill??
sounds like a bit of DOMS to me. Just normal muscle soreness after you've exerted yourself a bit more than usual.
