Not the shot I had planned to take but the promised red sunset because of Saharan dust didn't materialize. I took three versions of the same shot, spread over maybe five minutes. In one, you couldn't really see the office lights, in another you could only see the office lights and in this middle shot they were balanced. Timing is everything, I guess

I'm going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year. I've been before and I know you can get quite close to the track... I'm thinking that my 100-400mm is going to be overkill.

Any suggestions for an alternative? I was thinking about the 55-200 (or the XC 50-230, although I don't know what the focusing speed is like on that). Just seen the 18-135 though: anyone got any experience of that? It would save me changing lenses, but would it be long enough?

EDIT: I've just searched for FoS shots on Glass, and it seems that a lot of them were shot at around 50mm... maybe I'll just need my 16-80?

You *can* get close to the track but most likely you’ll be 2 or 3 deep and the bales are high. You might be better with a roving grandstand pass. Thursday used to be quiet now is busy, I expect the weekend will be hellish

If you’re looking for shots in the paddocks, displays etc then 50mm is ok but your 35 might be better suited. For track, I think I used a 16-80 and 70-300 on my d500. There are a LOT of heads to miss trackside

Lightning fast AF compared with any other Fuji I’ve shot with, near head on sequences, every shot in focus, panning still down to operator ability which needs more practice!!

Blackout free is nice, though screen can black at end of long sequences when writing out buffer.

40fps is just insane, will probably slow that down. ES readout is nice and fast no visible rolling artefacts so far.

Much more DSLR like than X-T bodies but for this application it suits, I wouldn’t want it as my everyday camera, but that’s personal choice.

Rally cars today at Weston Park, a new experience for me :)

I have two because they suit my hands so well and I felt I needed a spare. In my opinion, and it is just an opinion :) it's built to a higher standard than the X-H2, although that is based solely on a half hour try out in my local camera shop.

Because of the way my life is at the moment I have done very little photography. I have had a few try outs with my 150-600 zoom and one thing I have noticed is that the X-H1 with the battery pack attached is definitely heavy, but to me in a way the extra weight seems to stabilise the lens.

Hope this helps at least a little.

:agree: with that, a few months ago I saw a boxed near mint one in my local camera shop at around £400 less that the current model. I bought it to try my hand at wide angle and I'm delighted with it. Now, somewhat impatiently, waiting for drier, warmer weather.

I bought one last year and decided that super wide angle wasn't for me and moved it on, but I'm thinking I was a tad hasty. Might try and pick up another one at some point... (d'oh!)

Is there anyone else on here using the XF 16-80 F/4? I know it's not well-liked, but I've always been happy with mine. I keep thinking about the 16-55 F/2.8 though (would have to be mk1), and wondering if I'd actually see much benefit in day to day use...

The 16-55 is like having a bunch of primes, it is very sharp at all focal lengths, but it is quite bulky and heavy (and certainly the Mk1 version can make the body feel a little unbalanced). Obviously it lets a little more light in than the 16-80. Its not as discrete.

My take would be, if you want sharp images and can live with the weight/size and no range beyons 55mm then go for it. For me the bulk/size/weight puts me off as day to day use.

I think this is the key point for me; I'm happy with the sharpness of my 16-80 and I do use the whole range; I would get used to losing that last bit of zoom and I could crop in, but realistically I think I'd be making my setup bulkier & heavier just for the sake of it.

I had the 16-80 as a kit lens on my X-T4. Always happy enough with it.
When I bought the X-H2S I added the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Definitely worth considering.

I think you've answered your own question, spend the upgrade money on going to places to photograph :)

As ever, these are valid points (y) In recent months I have been, and am currently, wanting to take photos again. Determined to get out and about now the weather is hopefully warmer (and drier with any luck) and visit some places around the UK.

Alan I think we’re fairly local to each other; if you ever want to meet up and do some shooting I’d be up for that, especially if that helps get you back into shooting :)

I had one and a 16-55 f2.8 and traded both in for a 16-55 mkii. The 16-80 was OK but often wanted a bigger aperture

Still using mine now on the X-T5, Had it since my X-T2. Used in plenty of bad weather and still going strong. Isnt the old version meant to be optically identical to the new one as well? Was thinking of upgrading soon but given its low trade in value and still good optics I decided theres no point.

Yes, I believe they are optically identical.
