The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

I knew I shouldn't have gone to The Photography Show yesterday!
For quite some time now I have been in awe of the reviews and results of the XF 500mm f5.6.
Unfortunately LCE and WEX had a reduction of £600 on the usual retail, so I could resist no longer.
The problem was compounded by the fact I didn't have a Fuji body, so I've ordered a XH2s today - fingers crossed the autofocus has improved since my experience 7/8 years ago with my previous XT1 & XT3 bird photography. Reports seem to confirm it has.
But it's good to be back!

Anyone found any cracking deals on CF Express cards?

Hello Fuji fans. I need your help.

I hate my Sony A7iii. I have a 16-35 2.8 MK2, and a 100-400 with 1.4x extender, and a Chinese 50 0.95 (Mitakon?). I can't stand the camera, but the image quality is pretty good. However I want to sell the lot and replace it with an X-E5 and some lenses. Which lenses should I get?

Primarily I want a wide fast lens (could be a zoom) for landscapes, auroras and night scapes, and a long zoom like the range I get from the Sony 100-400.

I also have my primary camera, a Leica Q3. And a Ricoh GR3x HDF.

Also my wife has an XT3 and she has the 23 2.8 and a 60 macro (I think) which I intend to utilise.

I am familiar with the X range, and had several X100 variants including the X100VI which I sold as it overlapped too much with the Q3. My thinking is that the X-E5 can be like the X100 with the 23 2.8 on, and I can also use it for wide and long stuff.

Of key importance are lightness and compactness as well as high quality. And throw in a unicorn while you are at it.

Which lenses should I get? Don't worry about budget at this stage. And how will the X-E5 images stand up to the full frame Sony? Thanks.

Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f2 is top tier for astro work.

10-24 if you want a zoom for the wider end.

70-300 is incredible for the long end, especially considering it's size. Has a bonus of crazy close focus distance too. Also works with TC.

100-400 if you don't mind the size, but tbh the 70-300 already gives more reach than your full frame 100-400.

Oh, and as a unicorn - Viltrox 27mm 1.2. God I love that lens.

I have the 27/1.2 too but I got this at the Photography show this week, 10% off.

I am a bokeh whore and I am proud of it.

Amazing that this little lens basically a small version of the 105/1.4...almost but not the same...close enough!

You forgot the 33mm f1.4, every Fuji body needs one of those, it's the law.....

Andy, I use the 100-400 (plus the 1.4TC if needed) and am very happy with it. Today I took the X-T5 out with the 50-140 (70-200 equiv) and I forgot just how good that lens is. I also have the 10-24, but it is f4, so not sure if that's what you're looking for. There is the 8-16 f2.8, but it ain't cheap......

@Tobers - some of the lenses you appear to be considering are quite large (for APSC), you might want to consider an X-T body such as the X-T5 rather than the X-E series as they will balance better (for not much weight gain) and more importantly they have bigger (and higher resolution) EVFs - after the Q3 I think you will find the X-E5 disappointing

I too have the Q3 and use the Fuji XF50-140 and XF100-400, though in my case on the X-H2S (I also have an X-T3)

I was going to suggest the 35/1.4. I've spoken to a few people recently who seem to love the 33 as much as I love the 35 :)

The viltrox giving around 100mm f2 look (ff equivalent) is a really great option.

I’m wondering when sigma will release a mark ii of the 105mm with aperture ring and size/weight reduction like they have with their recent glass.

I am a firm believer in synchronicity, which worked for you regarding the 500 f5.6 in that it put you in the right place at the right time. It also removes any feeling of guilt at spending the money.:)

How would you rate the XT-5 EVF compared to other cameras you’ve owned/an OVF of a DSLR?

Alan

There are several things to consider with an EVF, size, resolution, magnification, refresh rate and eye-point - In my experience the bigger the size, resolution and magnification, the better the EVF experience as long as the refresh rate is acceptable. Eye-Point is more of interest to glasses wearers as it dictates the optimum distance that the eye should be away from the EVF surface - a short eye-point means that the eye needs to be closer to the rear face of the camera.

Your previous X100VI and the X-T5 have the same resolution, but the magnification is greater on the X-T5 which will make it appear bigger and give a more immersive experience. The X-H2S and X-H2 have higher resolution (5.76M v 3.69M) and more magification so appear even bigger to the eye. It is possible that the X-T6 will have this higher resolution EVF. The GFX 100 ii has a 9.14M EVF which not only is physically bigger and brighter, but has 1.0x magnification and is the closest I've experienced to an EVF getting close to a DSLR OVF in terms of experience and detail.

In terms of experience against an OVF, the biggest difference is the WYSIWYG factor, you can see exactly what your image will render like with an EVF, and it views exactly the frame you will be imaging. An OVF (like the X100VI) sees outside the frame, and IMO is generally a brighter viewing experience in normal daylight than an EVF. The EVF also allows magnification (zoom in) to a location within the image to ensure critical focus.

The preference is really down to the user, but IMO nothing beats staring into the GX680 waist level finder with its polaroid sized image staring back at you :)

The X-H2S has a lot faster AF than X-T1/X-T3, I have just moved from X-T3 to X-H2S for motorsport and the difference is night and day. Also the blackout free shooting with the stacked sensor is much nicer (along with stupidly fast burst speeds). The frame readout speed means that the Electronic Shutter can be used in most scenarios without rolling shutter effects. Enjoy!!

As for CF-Express Cards, like all memory at the moment these are on an increasing price curve, just buy what you need in terms of speed and capacity, we are in a situation where there are several generations of cards available, but the prices for older generations can be (in Gb/£ terms) the same as newer generation cards.

Fuji has a list of recommended cards https://www.fujifilm-x.com/global/s...ras/list-of-supported-memory-cards/#cfexpress

Memory prices are rising rapidly.

I have some CF Express B cards in the classifieds.

I saw the 135/1.4 at the Photography show. Same shell design as the 105 but they are using a different alloy that feels lighter in the hand (I don't have the numbers). I am guessing the discontinuation of the 105/1,4 probably due to the lack of sale, since it's quite close to the Macro lenses at this focal range and also the popular 85/1.4 and now 1.2.

I also tried the Sigma 200/2.0, that was a lovely lens but £3k? i think. That too uses the same alloy and feels lighter than it should be had it been made 5 years ago.

That’s a good point, thanks. Mrs T has an X-T3 which, while not huge at all, is larger than I’d like. I’m after something which can do “X100” duty (eg with the 23 2.8) but also be flexible enough to work at long range and wide as well. I think I need to visit a Fuji dealer and handle a bunch of the different lenses to see what works. In any event, the Q3 will remain my main camera and the X-E5 is for stuff the Q3 can’t do which is only about 20% of my photography.

I hadn’t realised the viewfinders are different. I need to check that out as well. Much appreciated.

I'm in the same boat, Q3 and Q3 43 are my main cameras, I have the X-H2S + 50-140 and 100-400 for motorsport, after the Q3 I think you will be very disappointed at trying to replicate an X100 series camera, the lens on the Q3 is more capable than the Fuji offers and the resolution of the sensor allows different focal length "crops" while maintaining decent resolution.

Last year I had the Q3 and an X-T3 with a bunch of lenses, but really I only needed the 35mm F1.4 and the longer zooms. Although the 35mm F1.4 is a lovely characterful lens, the colour aberation wide open (on things like racing car rioundel numbers) was very annoying, I tried the newer 33mm F1.4 as was surprised to see that this had similar (though not as extreme) aberation on hard black/white edges, so I bit the bullet, sold a lot of Fuji gear and bought the Q3 43. The Q3 43 lens is something else (and so it should be at the price!!). For the rest of the year the only lens I had with the X-T3 was the 100-400mm, then this year I have added the 50-140 and bought an X-H2S which in AF terms and burst rate speeds is in a different world to the X-T3.

In your shoes a trip to a decent dealer is a must (and don't touch the Q3 43 while you are there, the inevitable will happen!)

That’s great advice, thanks.

I have played with a Q3 43 but managed to stay away so far. Really I want something compact that will do wide angle and long zoom work for me, that isn’t my Sony A73. And the fact I can stick Mrs T’s 23 2.8 on it is a nice bonus.

Thanks for the detailed reply.
I almost exclusively used the OVF, and occasionally the rear LCD, with the various X100 models I have owned - I am not sure I would gel with an EVF at all - never liked it on the previous Panasonic/oly M43 cameras.

The weight and size difference of an X-T5 over an X-E5 is insignificant when paired with a long zoom, and the better balance, bigger, high resolution EVF and more accessible functions (amd the larger newer battery which will give you more time when doing astro on cold nights) would be a winner for me. Then pair with a wide angle lens of your choice, plenty of fast wide angle primes now available from 3rd parties, and you have a capable system that can still take your wife's 23mm F2.8 (not that you'd want to, you'll just reach for the Q3 instead ;))

Over the last couple of years I have gone away from do it all systems with bunches of lenses into picking kit that meets my requirements for the task in hand - this means I just take out what I need. I've also come to realise that I hate swapping lenses in the field and I really enjoyed last year where each body had only one lens (fixed in most cases!), now I have two lenses for the X-H2S I'm back to lens swapping (unless I buy another pre-loved X-H2S :ROFLMAO: )

You need to get to a dealer, I'm sure you will be reluctant to buy an X-E5 once you've comapred the EVF (even with your wife's X-T3, which is larger and higher resolution than the X-E5)

If you didn't get on with the EVF in the X100VI then the only difference will be that the X-T3 EVF looks bigger due to magnification, (0.66 v 0.8), so the EVF will be approx 21% bigger

The Fuji's almost certainly will be higher resolution than the M43 camersa you tried. Maybe you need to wait for the rumoured X-Pro4

I was so close! dipped my little toe back in the Fuji camp for a brief moment, Ordered an X100T for a trip to Spain this week and as soon as I unboxed it and held it I thought It's like coming home. Put my usual preferences into the settings and took a few indoor test shots. All good I thought until I changed the battery to check the other one it came supplied with, I was met with the setup screen again. Seems the internal capacitor has failed and even after 24hrs with a charged battery in it won't hold the settings. :(

So if anyone has a bargain X100* that they want to move on quickly let me know and we can sort out in the classifieds.

I've always been a fan of zoom lenses but feel that maybe I should try a pancake lens for a bit of street photography.
So.... What's a cheap, ideally autofocus lens of about 25 - 27mm. All I've read about the fuji 27 is that it's focus is very noisy which doesn't sound ideal.
Maybe I should try a manual - I don't know, it's just an itch following a very interesting zoom presentation by Jo Houghton at my local camera club.
Thanks!

Viltrox chip is super cheap, albeit fixed app at f4.5

I won’t say I ever noticed the noise from my Fuji 27 mm.
It rarely leaves my xe1. Always use it around towns or similar.
The 18mm only gets used if I need to go for the odd wider shot

Interesting - the review I read said it was noisy, maybe that was a faulty one..

I suppose it depends what you class as noisy, can’t see that you would notice this unless you were pretty close

It was right over the microphone here
