The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

A candid street style Snap captured a guy sitting quietly on the ground against a pillar at Trafalgar Square, sketching.
I've deliberately tried to get a film look to this presentation by lowering the detail and adding some grain.

Thanks, George (y)

Haha that's a little side table (photoshopped on the RHS to expand). We bought that in Pasadena about 25 years ago ;)

Hi everyone, newbie here. I've enjoyed browsing this thread over the years. It helped me to understand the capabilities and variety offered by APS-C mirrorless cameras and their lenses.

These two shots were taken recently.

A male chaffinch.

And a female great tit.

Both shot with an XT4 and the 70-300mm lens.

Thanks for sharing, reminded me of my Dad's passion for photographing small birds,he'd have been fond of these.

When I was a young boy my first pet was an adorable little budgie. Little birds are big on character when we get to know them better.

I know the chaffinches quite well now. Daddy Bruce and his youngest son (Ickle Bruce, recently fledged) are quite trusting of me. Ickle's older and eldest brothers are still a bit shy and wary. I can't tell them apart, hopefully photography will eventually allow me to distinguish between them by the minor differences in their markings. Currently I call both of the brothers "Hummer" as they always hover for a couple of seconds and flap their wings really fast before snatching a bit of food on the wing and carrying it off to a nearby tree to eat. They remind me a bit of humming birds.

I miss the Bonnies, Moma Bonnie and Bonita. Recently they were feeding heavily, maybe to prepare for migration? I haven't seen either of them for a while now. Bonnie used to land right beside me when I whistled to her and Bonita was quite familiar with me too.

The great tit pair didn't put in an appearance today. A charming little coal tit is also in the mix. It's very tame considering we've only known each other for a week or so. It almost landed on my knee today. It's very difficult to photograph as it's totally hyper. My friend noticed a pair of blue tits in the mix yesterday too. A tree creeper is also frequenting the same territory. Until a month ago only the chaffies were around. They are quite tolerant of the other birds. They have the numbers to swarm them away, but they all seem friendly enough for now at least.

The most personable bird I've ever known well was a female yellow shouldered Amazon green parrot. Her South African human named her "Heineken" after his favourite beer as she was mostly green all over and not much bigger than a bottle of Heineken. Heiny is in her late 40s or early 50s now. Quarantine officials used to go into raptures about her, they are quite a rare breed. In his bachelor days my friend would put Heiny into her own radio controlled car and drive her up to girls he wanted to date. Right on cue she would then squawk out "No fat chicks!" and the targeted gals would collapse with laughter. Heiny was an icebreaker for the ages and much the same could be said for her human's little black book!

And thanks for the welcome everyone. I'll post up some more photos as and when I can.

I love this narrative.

Picked up the little Godox iT30 Pro from Amazon and gave it a run out yesterday. Very easy to use on the X-Pro 2 and TTL trials showed it to be a very worthy flash for street. Will post some images using it in the weeks ahead.

Well a mate is going to sell his Leica Q2.... do I sell my X100VI to help fund it or just keep the VI. Real world desicions
That’s a difficult call!! The IQ from the Q2 will be better, but I think the big decision is 28mm v 35mm (especially if you crop a lot on the VI), it took me a few months to adjust from 35mm to 28mm.

Along the way you will also lose tilting screen, Fuji film sims, lots of customisable buttons, smaller (more pocketable), phase detection AF. The biggest gains will be ‘that lens’, F1.7 and a camera that gets out of the way and allows you to concentrate on the image.

it really is a difficult call. I felt the Q2 wasn’t enough of a step up (and the files IMO were nowhere near a flexible as I expected - but did own a GFX at the time (which may have coloured my judgement!!), hence I waited for the Q3 which has not been a disappointment. YMMV

Of course if you are Q curious and have a Leica itch that needs scratching - it’s an easy decision!!!!

Awful AF

If you can afford the Q2 and to keep the X100VI then why not sell the X100VI and get a used Q3 if you fancy trying a Leica ? If you don't like it you would get close to what you paid by reselling, a Q2 is a much harder sell these days.

Cheers David. A very useful list of pros and cons. Think the biggest drawback for me is the 28mm instead of 35mm. Tilt screen I would miss but not a deal breaker but I do make use of the film Sims in processing a fair bit.

If you can afford both. Definitely run them side by side until you can decide between them.
Unfortunately not really an option a Trevor.

Again would be a stretch to far financially wise.

Will need to mull it over for a couple of days.

Could always get an original Q and see how you get on with it?
You’ll still get that great lens and most of what is good about Leica, starting from around a grand.

That is a option I hadnt thought of Gramps. Think I will have suggest a meet up for a few hours a one day this week so I can try the Q2 for a few hours.

I think you probably need a couple of sessions on different days as the first time the 28mm will throw you off - added to the fact that the lens just thrives on wider apertures - I think the first time you’ll come back a little bit ‘meh’ but the second experience will probably have you hooked - and you’ll be concentrating on the image and less on comparisons

This might prove expensive then

There is a Q2 monochrome in my local LCE :)
Notes on the Q2 monochrom

1) increased sensitivity (no colour filter array) - cleaner high ISO
2) increased DR - about a stop, now on same level as Q3
3) when a highlight is blown it’s properly blown - no recovery possible (without AI)
4) can’t add colour filters in post - as there is no colour info for the software to work with, so colour filters have to be real physical ones on front of lens
5) most noise reduction software won’t work as it needs colour information
6) images are sharper as the spatial accuracy is better due to no Bayer interpolation

It’s a huge step change from X100VI and will force you to get more right in camera.

Mono conversions from the regular Q2 aren’t exactly shabby. I considered it to run alongside the GFX but ultimately felt that the Q3 would suit my needs better
