The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

X half arrived late yesterday, looks great in the graphite colour. Only managed a quick play and set it up. It does fit into a shirt pocket, very light and more robust than some reviews would have you believe. Yes, it’s plastic but isn’t a ‘toy’. Biggest issue, as already mentioned is the cost. If it was £500 most people wouldn’t be complaining. Some of the filters are the usual dross ( miniature, pop, soft focus etc.) the 14 film sims have included the 4 acros std/y/g/r in the total. Touch screens are both very responsive, and I don’t usually have much luck using certain touch screens for some reason.

Image quality is more than enough for online posting and my intended use of printing 4x6. Again, lots of negative reviews online for the image quality. If you want to print large or use it professionally, you bought the wrong camera!

Only negatives I have are the viewfinder, wish it had a diopter for my old cranky eyes. Parallax is an issue at certain distances but I’ll get used to that after a few shots. Wrist strap is janky and a peak design looks ridiculous on it. Led flash won’t fire an off camera flash, the flash is overall a bit s*** actually. X half app may be intended for people a bit younger than myself, not really interested in watching fake film be developed. But I do like the film mode. My sausage fingers have tended to stray close to the lens, camera is really small and you have to be careful if your hands are not tiny. Don’t like the fake shutter sounds, it has a leaf shutter for some reason but it’s almost silent.

Whenever I have a new camera or ask my wife to take a shot with any of my other cameras, she really doesn’t want to use them. She was all over this x half, in fact she’s taken it out this morning, that’s a first! Super easy for her to use in aperture or auto. It’s been worth buying just for that, just dropped into her bag and she was off.

If you can get over the cost, I can recommend it. If you’re expecting an xt5 or x100 series, you’ll be very disappointed. However, if you’re expecting and want a small, lightweight camera that’s easy to use for non camera people and that you can take anywhere and take family photos it’s great but not the cheapest.

The 23mm f1.4 is AF and does have a DoF scale which is useless in AF mode. To engage MF there is a clutch mechanism which is a ring focussing ring on the lens that when pulled backwards towards the body allows it to be a manual focus ring with hard stops at infinity and 02.8m (still fly by wire though) and it also exposes distance markers which are limited as the focus throw is only about 1/3rd of a turn. there are distance indicators in feet and meters from 0.28m, 1ft, 0.5m2.5ft, 1m, 8ft, 5m and infinity. Not sure how acurate they are though. Hope this helps you Lee @LeeRatters .

Lovely shots! I think James Popsys did a video there a while back, looks like the same place. It's on my list, next time I'm working somewhere near :)

Thanks.

One of the spots I was trying to find was in one of James' videos (and in his book.) I'll have another hunt around this week maybe.

James' book is really good btw if you enjoy his photos.

Haven't been shooting for a while, but fancied a 35ish equivalent. Picked up a Viltrox 25/1.7 for around £100 from AliExpress and it's really good. No CA like the older lenses and it's a nice compact size.

Grabbed the 56/1.7 and 35/1.7 while on sale last night for a combined £181 after top cashback. Absolutely bonkers value! Hope they are as good as the 25/1.7...

Finally got my hands on this little guy in a Fuji mount, the new tiny flash from Godox iT30 Pro (not sure what's pro about it? lol).

But it's great, it is both a trigger and reciever, it can therefore be my wireless flash setup, with the X100VI it makes a miniature package! (Leaf shutter too!)

It has a OLED touchscreen, a full METAL hotshoe (impressed) with 2 settings in narrow and wide.

Also got some spare batteries, all USB-C charging built in.

Really like the look of this. Is the trigger that you have on a couple of the pics a godox nano?

Have been very happily using a 13mm 1.4 and 27mm 1.2 for some time now. Really blown away by both and it even has me eyeing up the 75mm 1.2 which is a lens that traditionally I'd have very little use for. But I keep thinking I should check out some of their 1.7 stuff. As you say, astonishing value.

It's the X3 (Which Broncolour seems to have also copied/licenced/using the same OEM manufacturer) for.

Broncolor....which they added £100 on top just because.

Much appreciated.

Cheers. I think I might give that a try. I'm not a big flash user at all but I sometimes think that's partly down to the faff of my existing options all using rechargeable AA's. Quite like the idea of a compact little set up that is all USBC chargeable. I'll do a little reading up on this setup but on the face of it, it looks ideal.

The Broncolor RFS2.2 trigger appeared to be a reconfigured Godox X1-T

The Wex Bowens studio flash units are supposedly made by Godox though irritatingly the triggers are different.

I NEVER take a flash with me on my travel* because they are so big and need a separate charger, but I will take this one for all the reasons you said.

*with friends and family, for night photos with people in it.

I have the 56 & 35, I’m very happy with them both :)

Good to know, thank you!

I'm selling my original 35/1.4 to fund all three! ;)
I didn’t think I’d ever sell my 35/1.4 as I really loved it; but money was really tight a few months ago. I sold it, bought the Viltrox and pocketed nearly £200. I took a few shots and thought “No, it hasn’t got the magic”, but I’ve given it more of a chance and I’m really liking it now.

This shot was taken with the Fuji lens:

And by accident, I took it again a few weeks later with the Viltrox. I did a bit of back and forth with them and there’s virtually nothing in it; I’m certain that I wouldn’t know which was which in a blind test.

That second shot was taken on a walk up the high street in Southend. I got quite a few shots I was happy with, here are some more:

Great comparison, thank you, mind has been put at rest.

I've always enjoyed the XF 35/1.4, but it doesn't touch my favourite ever 50 fov lens for character - C/Y Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 on FF wins every time for me, even if it's significantly weaker wide open.

Looking forward to trying these new ones out.

I was lucky enough to be able to add a safari onto a business trip to Tanzania, so here are a few examples. All with Fuji X-T2 and a 100-400 lens

3. Obligatory lion

I've approximately 1,995 other shots from four days of safari so more might follow!
Wonderful photos.

A candid street style Snap captured a talented young guy with his guitar performing a bit of street playing in a bustling London market place.

Some random snaps from Aberdeen; I was working there a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic place, really enjoyed it. I picked up a 10-24mm so I thought it was the ideal time to try it out. Found that I was missing the reach of the 16-80 more often than I was appreciating the wide end, but I'm hanging on to it for now.
Having said that, I think these were all shot with the 16-80, on my X-T4.

I'm going again in September: I expect the sky will have been replaced by then! :D
I’ve been there lots of times and it always been grey. Edinburgh has been the same for me too. Didn’t recognise it with a blue sky. On one trip, my wife even said she always has an umbrella out up there.

Always have nice weather on the west coast , but it changes by the hour. Sunny one minute then raining or snowing the next.

I went about 30 years ago when my friend was at uni there. One of my memories from that trip was standing on the beach in December: the sky was blue, the sea was turquoise, the sand was yellow, it was a perfect image of a sunny beach... except that it was about 1 degree :)

It does look tropical when the weathers nice.

wish I was up there now. It’ll be packed with kids soon. Midges and kids everywhere until September :(

Midges are usually more of a west coast thing.

@skullfunkerry if you get time, check out the Art Gallery, one of teh best galleries I've been to.

I once did a bikini shoot on a beach in Wales in the middle of December at sunset. It was about 5c. The sky was blue and had a great colour lol.
