The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Dear Fuji Gurus.

I got my X100s and I'm quite happy, it's in very good condition and everything seems to work but... I ordered a 49mm filter for it and I've just spotted that there's no filter thread except on the outside of the lens.

Is it possible to somehow fit a conventional filter to these?

Ah. I've googled my way to an adapter which seems to be just what I need :D

While I'm here, one of my first test shots.

f2, 1/60, ISO 800.

I see that the lens is soft at close distance but at f2.8 it looks fine to me. Another observation... Outside in the darkness the EVF doesn't show as much detail as my other cameras and the AF goes on holiday but switching to the OVF gets decent results. I don't think I'll be using this camera in the dark but if I feel the need to I think the OVF and manual focus is the way to go.

I'm off to order that filter adapter now :D

Congrats.

For me the OVF is what makes the X100 series rangefinder style camera a winner.

Detest EVFs and also not that keen on a centre viewfinder placement where your nose smudges the screen.

Don’t forget a spare battery. Battery value reporting is a bit flakey on these early models.

I'm just waiting to see if the battery will charge in camera whilst it's connected to my pc via the usb lead as I couldn't spot this in the manual. I'll probably order a battery too.

Oh, I checked the sensor and it's clean at f16. Good stuff! :D

One last quick question... Can the battery be charged in the camera whilst the camera is plugged into a computer USB port?

I've had it plugged in a while and there's next to nothing in the battery and my other cameras would be charged by now so I don't know if it's not charging at all or if it is just a bit slow.

In theory yes, but a long time ago there were reports of it working very ineffeciently! I've never used it, always charged the battery in the supplied charger (or a third party one). the smaller NP-95 batteries (as opposed to the later NP-W126) don't last that long in the camera, so a spare is almost essential, but if you use the OVF and don't chimp they can last a surprisingly long time. As @trevorbray said, the battery usage meter is next to useless, expect it to show nearly full/full most of the time, dropping significantly for the last 20 shots!

The EVFs on early Fuji X series cameras were not super bright, and suffer from slow update and limited number of colours shown, many prefer the OVF even though the number of focus points is reduced. The OVF also allows a view beyond the frame, so you are pre-empted about targets entering the frame. Bear in mind as well that the Highlight/Shadow settings have an effect on the EVF image (and JPG), so make sure these are set to your liking

The X100S is a little pedestrian (not as bad as the original X100) but it more than makes up for it with the IQ.

I know about seeing beyond the frame as I had film RF's but with the Fuji I don't think you get as much beyond the frame but I suppose every little helps. The EVF does have advantages including being able to see what's in focus and TBH I think it is the EVF I'll be using most.

Other than that I'm not finding it too pedestrian but of course the focus could be quicker. The only things lacking are eye/face detect for which the work around is moving the focus point to about where I think it should be before lining up the shot and higher ISO settings which are sadly not available when shooting RAW but that's less of an issue as I don't I'll be shooting in near darkness.

I assume the firmware is up to date as well https://fujifilm-x.com/en-gb/support/download/firmware/cameras/x100s/

Personally I focus and recompose. With regard to high ISO images, you probably wouldn't want to go above 6400 on an older X-Trans sensor anyway, it does of course have an inbuilt flash which can be handy when shooting at night (remove any lens hoods if using this!!!)

ISO 6,400 looks ok to me.

With the security light on this should be noisy but IMO it's ok as a whole picture.

f2, 1/125 and ISO 6,400.

I took this one when the light went out and it is brighter than your eye would see. AF didn't work but switching to the OVF and zone focusing at 3m got a useable picture. Not that you'd want a picture of a fence but the point was to see what's possible and taking pictures in the dark is possible with a bit of care for whole pictures at least.

@Norkie

I had a go at pixel shift.
Image one is the first frame of the set used, no edit, just uploaded as a jpeg
Image two is the resulting huge file
Uploaded as a jpeg because Flickr rejected the full size dng
You'll need to click through for a better comparison

Wow, you can see the increase in detail, impressive ;)

Looks like there are some quite stiff XF lens price increases on the way - according to the Fujirumours site a leaked document for Fuji Japan, shows increases of between 10% and 30% for most XF lenses - there are some exceptions at the lower price points eg the Fujicrons

If these increases are reflected worldwide then we are in for a bit of a re-alignment. I don't expect the Fuji will be the only company doiung this.

Most of the Amateur Radio gear is built in Japan, and that's gone up 10-15% recently, so I would expect camera tech to go up in price too.

Think Canon have already announced similar.

Glad I picked up the 16-55 recently when Amazon had a big chunk off. Might make picking up the 50-140 a harder choice though.

Ouch. If those prices happen and a very quick yen to gbp conversion puts the 50-140 at £1710.

Wonder if body price rises will be coming too.

I've been looking through this thread wistfully, and thinking about how much I miss my old X-T20... but on Sunday I picked up an absolute bargain on an X-T30 and 18-55mm lens. As luck would have it yesterday I had a day at IWM Duxford booked, as it was my mum's birthday so I spent the day shooting. Really pleased with it: it's just a lovely thing, and I love the colour rendition. Pretty much everything I shot with my FZ2000 needed a bit of "lifting" in post, but yesterday's shots are pretty much perfect SOOC. I'll be adding a few to Flickr soon, but here's a very small selection:

Looks like 10% on the XF50-140mm, that said Black Friday deals will bring it down to at least the levels we have now.

I don't expect bodies to increase yet (they almost certainly will in time), but they are a much more competitive part of the camera market.

You must have replied as I edited my op.

A quick yen/gbp puts it around £260ish more. What’s that. Just shy of 20%.

Absolutely can’t justify it just yet anyway, but one can dream!

I wouldn't just convert Yen to GBP, there are different price structures and local taxes in each regional market. I worked out the XF501-40mm had gone up 10% in Japan, so was likely to go up 10% here.

Plenty of used one's about.

I’m not clued up on the conversions if honest. Just playing about.

I’m still recovering from getting married. No lens either new or secondhand will be coming my way just yet

Its one of the reasons I decided to pickup the XH2 now rather than wait until next year, the price increases are looking eye watering.
I've got the Viltrox 13mm now and the Fuji 23mm f1.4R, I wasn't planning on getting much else but I might try and pickup a 16-55 and Sigma 56mm now.

I don't often take my X-T2 and 35mm f1.4 out with the kids, as it is "too slow", however, I decided to take it along for our walk in the woods this afternoon, and love these photos.

The 35/1.4 is a special piece of glass -- I will own another at some point...!

Beautiful captures.

I know I want a new Fuji camera...currently have a XT1 and XPro1. Not wanting to go for XPro2...frankly whilst I prefer the offset rangefinder look and feel in the hand. I don't like the offset OVF, it throws me off.

Anyway, the reason is that without wanting to spend too much, the XT3 and XH1 are are the 2 which have fallen to the right price bracket for the upgrade. I know about the tech in them, I know the XH1 is larger, etc..what i want to ask is, which you do you pick and would you pick?

If you want IBS (and a lovely shutter release button) then X-H1, but for everything else I'd pick X-T3, with the latest firmware its a great camera.

Lovely images, don't think I ever owned one of these lenses but have read a lot about it though.
