The 35mm F2 is my main lens on my X-T1, and I primarily do street photography. It is a fantastic lens! Nice and small, and sharp at F2, with lovely bokeh.

I recommended it over the F1.4, which my friend has. The extra stop is cool, but the images don't *feel* as nice as the F2. I have been shooting the X-T1 and 35mm F2 for a quite a while now, and love the combo.

Not used the F2, but I have the 1.4 and it's a beauty. It's tack sharp even wide open, as I'm sure the F2 is, but that extra stop of light plus shallower DOF is worth it IMO. I don't think anyone could really tell the difference between the 2 stopped down tbh

Irises. First day out with X-T2 and 18-55. Very pleased. JPEGs Velvia straight out of camera.

Think I'm going to adopt this policy. I'm now looking to pick up an X-T1, probably with the 18-55 lens, then get my first prime to go with it. The X-T2 can come at a later date. I'd like to get decent lenses in my bag first and sticking with the X-T1 will allow me some money to do this.

I'll probably buy from the Fuji Refurb shop. I've had two cameras from them before and the service was good. Hopefully one of the discount codes still works. I think I'd like to try a 35mm, so am reading up on the old f1.4 vs the new f2.

35mm 1.4 has it quirks - but its super sharp. here on the x-t1

Nice sharp shots. I do like that lens.

Very sharp indeed. I wonder if my 35mm f2.0 is as sharp. the AF seems a issue with the 1.4 lenses apparently.
Wonder if Fuji will make MKII versions of these lenses.
I could be tempted to increase my GAS list and add the 1.4 primes to it :D lol

Generally I found the older 35 to be sharper but your right the AF isn't as snappy, I wouldn't be surprised to see an updated one eventually, after all there are persistent rumours of an upgrade to the 18mm

Apparently or allegedly? If you haven't experienced it for yourself, surely it's only an allegation [emoji14]

the 35 and 23 1.4's are certainly audible and not the fastest. but I've used both at a wedding and they didn't let me down in the slightest. personally i wouldnt consider the f2's due to the loss of aperture.

Guess I will have to consider it on my next GAS spree :D lol

Re 35mm f2 and f1.4

When I first bought into the X-System with my X-Pro1 I purchased the 35mm f1.4 and loved it's sharpness and the speed didn't bother me.
When the f2 was released (I was shooting the X-T1 at this point) I wasn't that fussed but when one came up in the classifieds in March last year I thought I'd give it a go.
After some testing over a week with the lens I decided to keep the 1.4 and sell the f2 again. This decision was purely down to image quality from both lenses. Yes the f2 is faster to focus but I think the noise that the 1.4 makes while focusing makes it seem longer than it is. For my type of shooting the slight speed increase wasn't making any difference. The weather sealing is nice to have but I'm more a fair weather photographer so again no great benefit to me.

Come October last year I was mainly shooting the X-Pro2 and because the style of the f2 fits better with it I bought another and although I still had reservations over the image quality I decided that I would part with the f1.4 and keep the f2.
Typically (for me and my gas anyway) I then sold the X-Pro2 and bought the X-T2 and anytime I was shooting with the 35 I regretted not having the f1.4 anymore. I even stood in the rain one day in Ireland shooting a parade to try and convince myself to keep the f2! But as soon as another 1.4 came up for sale I had it and have parted with the f2 again.

Here are some shots from my initial comparisons back in March last year.

Firstly both lenses shot wide open f2 on the left f1.4 on the right.
35mm f2 vs f1.4 at widest.jpg

secondly both lenses at f2

35mm f2 vs f1.4 @f2.jpg

Third shot with both at f8 and I think it's only at this point that the f2 comes close

35mm f2 vs f1.4 @f8.jpg

The first three shots are 100% with small focus point on the eye. When you start to look elsewhere in the image though strange things are going on.
The edge of my tv is just in shot on the left hand side, and please note I do not own a curved TV!

edge at widest aperture

When closed down to f8 as I said above the sharpness on the f2 is close to the f1.4. However the strange warping at the edges becomes worse.

So yeah, I'm keeping the f1.4 and can tolerate the slight speed difference and ignore the noises. :D

Thanks for the information, food for thought.
My Fuji GAS list is quite big at the moment and I really need to watch the ££££ so will resist for now.

Darn... Amazon have the Fujinon 35mm f1.4 on for £399 at the moment... seems cheaper than most places...... as its £499 everywhere else! :o :D

Throw your Lightroom catalog at Lightroom Analytics, anything you use for less than 1% of your shots, get rid off, its quite therapeutic!!!

Sounds like a good plan :D
I had a horrible thought the other day, that I had sold the lot and bought a Fuji X100F  or the original Sony A7 with 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8.
Or maybe even the Sony A6500, 16-70mm f4, 70-200mm f4, 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8

The lens on the X100 family is quite soft towards the edges at f2,this is more noticeable on the X100F (higher resolution), that said its still a lovely camera, but it does have limitations.

The Lightroom thing worked for me, sold 4 lenses and 1 body (in my case 60mm, 18-135mm, 35F1.4mm and 50-230mm all went, my bag is noticeable lighter!)

Just got back from a week in Eigg, plus two days to get there and another two to get back. This was from my very first night, with the ever reliable 18-55mm. It took a lot of time and energy to get there, but it was an excellent decision :)

And the weather was fantastic, albeit I could have used a few more clouds at times. Still, for Scotland in early May to have a dry week is something like a miracle!

That's one very nice shot Sir, well composed, lovely light & colours, great sky with some good reflections.(y)

George.

I tried the 35mm f1.4 and altho I do like it because you can open up to 1.4 but the focus seems to hunt alot on me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong so I end up with the f2 version. After seeing the 1.4 images, I think you can't really go wrong with either version.

All the images below were shot wide open on the 35mm f2 in some very very poor indoor light. Baby is not the easiest thing to shoot ......

I don't pixel peep these days and I think is ok.

I want the following next (GAS)....

replace my 10-14mm f4 with the 8-16mm f2.8
get the 80mm f2.8 macro (1:1:)
maybe get the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6, but I know I wouldn't use this much OR the 200mm f2 prime.
replace the XT-2 with the pro Fuji XT body
get the revised Nissin i60a and Air1 (HSS) flash system

I think at this point my collection pretty much complete covering all bases. :D

Thanks George, very kind as ever. My challenge was to come home with something other than 67,000 shots with Rum in the background and a variety of beach stuff in the foreground :-). Not sure I entirely succeeded but we shall see!

You're right, it was definitley working yesterday, I was looking at an X-E2S, put it in the basket and used PAYPAL12 and it applied the discount. I didn't buy it though.

Worked for my purchase yesterday. Not working now

I used a different code last weekend and it works. Just got my XE2s today with the 10% discount. £327 inc postage for my camera and is on my desk right now. Such a lovely day to test the camera at lunch time but i forgot my SD card ....... at least I config all the settings exactly the same as my XT1.

I've just tried every discount code I know of on the refurb site and it seems that as of last night they have all stopped working. This has happened before though so they may well start working again over the coming days.

I think someone earlier on here said that they only work with bodies and kits. Not, say, Lenses on their own.

It's not just me then. Damn. Should have placed an order yesterday instead of dillydallying trying to make my mind up!

Tried it with kits and bodys on their own to no avail. Defo used to work with kits as I've used it before.

Oh well. Shall leave it a few days and see what happens.

Wow, that makes me wonder if the F2 you had might have been a bit of a dud copy? I expected them to be about on par at 2.8 on

I think a lot of people highly exaggerate about how noisy and slow the 1.4 is. Since the latest updates, even on the XT-1, it' zippy enough for my needs. Outdoors you'll never hear the AF noise, in fact it should only bother you if you were photographing in complete silent locations, maybe a museum or so. As for the AF hunting, only very occasionally in very dim lighting it'll skip on me. I would bet the F2 is much zippier, but do I need much faster AF? not so much. Do I need a silent lens? nope. I do love that the one I got is sharp wide open and I love the contrast, clarity and feel it gives to photos.

In isolation its not slow (AF), but compared with each newer generation of Fuji lenses its AF performance is just more noticable, its still a great lens.

I'm with you on those points Sir.(y)

I've never had problems with the auto focus etc on my 35mm 1.4. Sure it's a tad slower focusing than the F2 and yes it can be heard a little, but hardly what I would call noisy. It may be that I have a very good copy of the lens as I found that stop for stop my F1.4 version (from F2 onwards) looked sharper at all apertures compared to the F2 version that I tried on loan. Having said that it's quite possible that the F2 version that I tried was not quite up to par.

George.

I think I'm ok with the noise too because I've used much worse in the past. I remember having a Nikon 50mm 1.8 that you'd hear other end of a busy street :D it was much slower to focus than the Fuji too. Similar with a Sony 50mm I had for my first dslr, the A200. Usually I will take quality over speed though, it's just how I shoot that I don't need lightening fast AF. I'll never be a sports 'tog for example.
