Re 35mm f2 and f1.4
When I first bought into the X-System with my X-Pro1 I purchased the 35mm f1.4 and loved it's sharpness and the speed didn't bother me.
When the f2 was released (I was shooting the X-T1 at this point) I wasn't that fussed but when one came up in the classifieds in March last year I thought I'd give it a go.
After some testing over a week with the lens I decided to keep the 1.4 and sell the f2 again. This decision was purely down to image quality from both lenses. Yes the f2 is faster to focus but I think the noise that the 1.4 makes while focusing makes it seem longer than it is. For my type of shooting the slight speed increase wasn't making any difference. The weather sealing is nice to have but I'm more a fair weather photographer so again no great benefit to me.
Come October last year I was mainly shooting the X-Pro2 and because the style of the f2 fits better with it I bought another and although I still had reservations over the image quality I decided that I would part with the f1.4 and keep the f2.
Typically (for me and my gas anyway) I then sold the X-Pro2 and bought the X-T2 and anytime I was shooting with the 35 I regretted not having the f1.4 anymore. I even stood in the rain one day in Ireland shooting a parade to try and convince myself to keep the f2! But as soon as another 1.4 came up for sale I had it and have parted with the f2 again.
Here are some shots from my initial comparisons back in March last year.
Firstly both lenses shot wide open f2 on the left f1.4 on the right.

Third shot with both at f8 and I think it's only at this point that the f2 comes close

The first three shots are 100% with small focus point on the eye. When you start to look elsewhere in the image though strange things are going on.
The edge of my tv is just in shot on the left hand side, and please note I do not own a curved TV!

When closed down to f8 as I said above the sharpness on the f2 is close to the f1.4. However the strange warping at the edges becomes worse.

So yeah, I'm keeping the f1.4 and can tolerate the slight speed difference and ignore the noises.

I had a horrible thought the other day, that I had sold the lot and bought a Fuji X100F
Or maybe even the Sony A6500, 16-70mm f4, 70-200mm f4, 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8
Just got back from a week in Eigg, plus two days to get there and another two to get back. This was from my very first night, with the ever reliable 18-55mm. It took a lot of time and energy to get there, but it was an excellent decision
And the weather was fantastic, albeit I could have used a few more clouds at times. Still, for Scotland in early May to have a dry week is something like a miracle!

I'm with you on those points Sir.
I've never had problems with the auto focus etc on my 35mm 1.4. Sure it's a tad slower focusing than the F2 and yes it can be heard a little, but hardly what I would call noisy. It may be that I have a very good copy of the lens as I found that stop for stop my F1.4 version (from F2 onwards) looked sharper at all apertures compared to the F2 version that I tried on loan. Having said that it's quite possible that the F2 version that I tried was not quite up to par.

it was much slower to focus than the Fuji too. Similar with a Sony 50mm I had for my first dslr, the A200. Usually I will take quality over speed though, it's just how I shoot that I don't need lightening fast AF. I'll never be a sports 'tog for example.
Both copies I owned were the same.
