I have a wrist strap but the thought of dropping it at all, and then dangle and swing to hit whatever rail i am near etc is best avoided.

The other bonus of the half case is that it moves the tripod mount away from the battery door so i can change batteries without taking the plate off.
 
Ok, first time using a basic off camera flashgun this afternoon whilst out in the woods with our loyal border collie Breia. Around a year ago I bought a Yongnuo YN560III and separate Yongnuo TX flash/trigger and thought I'd have a play to see if I could actually make it sync/work.......I've never used it before. I have zero/nil experience with any flash guns. I attached the front diffuser and set it on the ground on the right of our collie about twenty five feet away and experimented........a lot, here's what I came up with, I think it adds a subtle depth to the final image (?)

Taking my Rosie for her first ever grooming Saturday morning.

At £44 it better be worth it. I may have to get her in the studio again to try the Fooj out with the Lencartas.

I'm attempting to edit my photos more, to make a picture instead of my usual taking a picture.
So i'm trying cropping stuff to see how it affects the final image.
How it might set up a narrative.

Just a simple landscape/seascape shot taken the last time I was in the Cornwall area.

On the X-T1, if the ISO dial is on Auto. Is there any way still to use one of the command dials to change the ISO?

And where can I assign function to what the command dial do?

lastly, If I assign to shoot Jpeg and Raw, and shoot to shoot in Classic Chrome. Does the CC apply to RAW? I am guessing no?
 
Really think i may have to buy a second one of these and dump the Canon gear.

I'm pretty sure on the X-T1 ISO is all controlled with the ISO dial. For the command dials you can swap between shutter speed or aperture on the front/rear dials. I don't think you can assign anything else, but it's been a while since I picked up the X-T1.

The jpeg preview in the RAW will also be set using the CC preset, but that'll probably get overwritten if you're using Lightroom.

Thanks, does the command dial only work on specific lenses? All my lenses have aperture rings, I guess that means the command dial won't work because of this.

I'm pretty sure if you set the aperture ring to A, you can then use the command dial to control the aperture. I may be wrong though, I've got so used to just using the aperture ring on the lens now :D

I've figured out if I put the shutter speed dial to T, then I can use the command dial.

But putting the lens aperture to A doesn't seem to do much to the command dial.

Well the front and rear dials should control either shutter or aperture. So if the rear command dial is changing shutter speed, the front should be doing aperture. I'll have to fire up the X-T1 to have a look.

I'm sure you can only use a command dial to control the aperture if the lens doesn't have an aperture ring. The "A" on an aperture ring only puts it in Auto. It doesn't permit command dial use.

Just tried it with the 23mm f1.4, set the aperture ring to A, then I can use the front dial to set the aperture as I wish. The shutter dial is set to A so that just adjusts to suit. If I use the rear dial to change the shutter speed, the aperture then adjusts to suit. If the shutter dial is set to a specific speed then you don't get the option to change the aperture with a dial.

What are your other settings?

I have ISO at Auto; shutter speed set to Auto, aperture set to auto. And the camera says it's in P mode.

And no dials work. Rear dial will work if I set shutter dual to T. Or I can change the setting to move the function to the front dial. Still can't figure out how to get the dials to change aperture.

Yes, it shows P mode. I have ISO set to auto as well, although if I do set the ISO to a specific value it will adjust the shutter/aperture within those bounds.

When in P mode I don't see the numbers for aperture or shutter speed at the bottom. So that means I can't change it.

Hmmm, I can't see any settings that stand out that might make a difference here. Here's a snap showing all 3 set to A and you can see the shutter and aperture shown on the LCD. When I change them via the dials the numbers turn yellow.

Also works with the 56mm, I've changed the aperture here using the front dial to f4.5 so you can see the change highlighted by the yellow text and the shutter speed changing:

I put the 56mm on too, everything on auto and don't see the numbers.

What firmware are you running?

Just to chime in - i've never been able to use the dials either (on the xt10), though I haven't checked since updating firmware.

It was a bit of a letdown tbh, cos thats how I used to use the Canon and my x30, but i've learned to live with it now...

I just tried with face detect and CL as per your settings, and I still have control. I think you're right that it's likely to be the firmware. I'm still on 4.3 as there has been nothing worth upgrading for since then. If you look at the firmware notes it mentions: "The functions allocated to the Front command dial are added which became disable when the firmware was upgraded to ver.5.00 from ver.4.31." which sounds like they broke something with v5?

I'm not sure on that. I may have the older firmware file, but I dont know if that's a good idea or not!

I tried it on the X-T2, which only lets me change the shutter speed with the rear dial, the front dial is disabled. So, it seems to me the value of my old X-T1 just got a boost :D

Did you try to press the front dial before turning it?
