The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

I didn't notice you had replaced the image...therefore my last post was directed to the old image and not the new one. I think you thought I said your re-edit wasn't straight, which I didn't.

This looks like it requires a lot of patience, which I don't have, but I can spend minutes looking at each picture! Think we need setup pictures!

I'm full of little tricks!

Set up pics? Really its all just a jumble of wires and jugs of water. Not really very organised. I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

Taking the shots is easy. I just sit there and press a couple of buttons. Lots of micro adjustment to try and get it right and just like motor sport or birds in flight there are far more rejects than keepers.

I won't comment on any possible use of CS6.

OK. You want pictures? Prepared to be bored!
The first is of my "studio". In reality it is the loft. I put some chipboard on the floor and covered it with redundant carpet. Screwed some plasterboard to the rafters and got a mate to skim it. There was an unused power supply in the room below so that was run up there. It is not much more than 8' square, but I'm 6'2" and can only stand upright in the centre. Other times I'm bent over. This was taken at the far end of the space with a 24mm on full frame, so you can get an impression of how small it really is.

The loft

The rest show various bits of gear.
Fuji on tripod, and control unit for the setup strapped to one of the legs.
The liquid is Guar gum (A food thickening agent) in dilute solution with dishwasher rinse aid added. The green shots were Xanthem gum with no rinse aid. Colouration is by Oasis flower water colourant.
The striped BG is a roll of cheapo wrapping paper from Clinton Cards pasted onto a piece of chipboard. The blue BG is a leftover roll of wallpaper.
Flashes are trigerered by YN 622TX on camera and 622Cs under the flash.

It's all a bit Heath Robinson and I'm very restricted by lack of space, but in winter when the only alternative is talking to SWMBO it's my little refuge!

(Pictures are below my usual quality but CBA doing a proper job!!!)

Go on then. You can't leave it like that!
OK here goes.

I'm gonna tell you a wee story. There are two guys, two wee Glasgow guys, and they went on holliday, to Rome, and they were being tourists, you know. "Holy, hm, hm, another one over there." "Oh, that's great, I wonder who papered that ceiling, that's fantastic." Going around the place, looking at things. And the sun there in Rome was getting to them, you know. "Today the sun's beating down on my head." "It's beating down on mine as well, funny that, ain't it?" "Might as well go have a bevvy." And they will enter a wee bar, in Rome, you know, wandered straight up to the bar, saying to the barman "Hey Jimmy, give us two pints of heavy." He says "What!". In italian, you know. He says "Give us two pints of heavy, know what I mean." He says "We don't sell heavy in Rome, you know." "Oh, what a bore. What've you got there, I don't know anything Italian, baby." He says "You are welcome to anything you see here, you know" "Hmmm. Do you know anything." "No, I don't know anything." "I tell you what. What does the Pope drink?" He says "Well, he likes a glass of Creme de Menthe from time to time." "Gives us two pints of that, then." [???] Two green pints duly arrive. "Well, all the best. When in Rome, get it, 'when in Rome'." "What do you think." "It's a bit like drinking Polar Mints, ain't it?" "Ah well, who cares. Another two pints, Jim, no, keep your hand in your pocket, give us another two. My round. Same again. [On eight???] empty it."

They wake up in the morning, in a crumbled heap, in a doorway. Peed the trousers. Steam [???] And they've been sick, down the left side of the jacket. They have been shouting huey all night, right. "Hu-ey hu-e-ey" And occasionally Ralph. "Hu-ey. Ra-alph. Ralph. Huey." And it's green. Green huey or Huey Green, if you like.

Here's a thing. Have you ever wondered, why everytime you're sick, there's diced carrots in it. I have never eaten diced carrots in my life. I have come to the conclusion, that drink doesn't make you sick, it's diced bloody carrots. There's probably a pervert somewhere, with pockets full of diced carrots, following drunk men.

Meanwhile, back in Rome, the two guys are lying in the doorway, and they are just getting awake, y'know. "Ohhhh. Ohh my head. Christ. Oh, I think I'm wearing an internal balaklava. Oh. Oh, my body's all sore. Ahhh! I cannot feel my leg!" "That's my leg, you [???]" "Oh, thank Christ for that. Got a fright [???] How are you feeling?" "I'm feeling kind of funny. I think I've had a tongue transplant. This one doesn't even seem to fit." "Jesus, they say the Pope drink that stuff. Not any wonder, they carry him about in a chair."

Is it PC to laugh at that?
I can just imagine Billy Connolly telling that. Would take him best part of 20 minutes!
Just got back from Rome. Pope blessed me. Don't think he knew what I've done. Also I'm not a redneck, so he was wrong on two counts!

Just a quick request to anyone sat next to their XT1 and 27mm!
What is the depth of the camera - tip of lens cap to surface its sat on J.

Hoping its less that 70mm!

Just ordered my graphite silver X-T1 from onedigitals.co.uk (via credit card and PayPal so safe)!......

Did a load of research and found that they were offering the best deal, £900 shipped with the 18-55.

Can't wait to get my hands on it over the festive period.

Never heard of em, good luck!

Already had a chat with a very helpful lady on the phone (London number).

She has confirmed it will be shipped and with me before Christmas.

If it all goes to pot, I'll buy one from a UK seller. Only £100 more.

Not quite only £100 more. UK silver body is 1k after cashback without lens. I probably wouldve gone with a more reputable importer for warranty. Congrats on the purchase though.

That's why I called them.

The lady on the phone assured me that the UK do not pay any import tax / duties.

It's a risk I was willing to take, if it goes to pot I'll cancel the transaction. If it does workout, great news for everyone else!

Hopefully it all works out for you, looking at the prices they arent miles out from the usual suspects sometimes more, sometimes less.

Ryan, according to their T&C you are the importer of the kit, so maybe she has misunderstood the question? https://www.onedigitals.co.uk/terms-and-conditions

By purchasing a product through the site, you agree that such purchase and the import of such product complies with the laws of the country to which you have requested ONEdigitals to ship the product, and agree that you will be considered the sole "Importer" of the product to your country for all purposes, including customs regulations and copyright and trademark laws. You acknowledge and agree that ONEdigitals's role is limited to procuring products available in Hong Kong and other regions and making these products available through the site to you for purchase in Hong Kong and for your import to your country. In no event will ONEdigitals be a party to the import of such products nor will it be responsible for any liability arising under the laws of any country other than Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for the import and sale of products available on the site, including without limitation customs regulations and customs holds, detentions and seizures and copyright and trademark laws.

It does go on to qualify that slightly by saying "When ordering goods from ONEdigitals, overseas deliveries may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once the package reaches the specified destination. Any additional charges for customs clearance must be borne by you, unless an Import Handling Charge is included in the price of the goods.", so maybe they have included the Import Handling Charge in the price?

I hope it works for you, but import duty is different to VAT. On importation goods are liable to import duty (varying rates depending on commodity) and VAT (due on total of goods value and import duty). Most consumer camera kit has zero import duty but is still liable for 20% VAT, so she was correct if she said there will be no import duty to pay....but wasn't telling the full story.

Sod it, just did some more research and cancelled the order.

SOOO many bad reviews.

They were still very helpful on the phone and I've had confirmation it's been cancelled.

Oh well, lets find another one.......

Might be a good move Ryan. Better luck with your next pick!

Just picked up another one off eBay from a UK seller.

Will be here Friday, £964.95 delivered :)

Got a quick question for X-T10 owners.
I'm shooting with a Canon EOS M right now, and it's a better camera than its reputation suggests. However I recently started playing with off camera lighting and I discovered one crippling downside. It's got some bleeding stupid exposure simulation mode that can't be turned off, so if I want my camera to ignore all ambient light and just use the flash to light my subject I can't compose my image because the screen is black. There are ways to work around this, I know that, but it's a pain, and frankly I shouldn't have to work around it. Same thing on the M3. So I'm giving the EOS M system the boot.

I want to get an X-T10, it looks like a great camera, Fuji glass look great. But before I pull the trigger, am I going to have to deal with the same problem here, or is it just a brand of idiocy specific to Canon?

Magic lantern?

If I understand you correctly then yes the screen will be black if you set the camera to ignore ambient light. I'm having the same problem with my water drop shots. You'll just have to find a work round. I have!!!

You can turn it off :) I've been doing the same thing. Turns off easily.

Yeah, I just tried a few new search terms and found my answer. You can turn off exposure simulation on the X-T10. (Really should have looked harder before I posted here)

Just measured mine and it's literally bang on 70mm with the lens cap on (would be less if the rubber eye cup was removed).

Out of interest, I'm guessing this is for a bag, can I ask which one please (got a few that are a tight fit for different Fuji combos, so might be able to help)

Simples ain't it?

Really it ain't simple at all. I've just counted and it takes 21 button clicks to knock it off. Then when you want to put it back that's another 21 clicks. 42 clicks to switch on and off a simple feature. They are having a larf!
AFAIK you can't assign that to any particular button, can you? What a waste of time and effort.
You can get the same effect with just 2 clicks. Now that's simples, but you do have to think a bit how to do it.

Morning all....

Just a quick one about lenses.

I'm taking delivery of my X-T1 on Friday and it's coming with the 18-55mm.

I'm looking to purchase another lens and really struggling since all the XF range seem fantastic.

If you were to buy one other lens, which would you go for?

Cheers!

Make your choice based on focal length.

it really depends on what type of photography you lean towards ?
I usually tell people not to purchase any other lens than the one they have on camera.
If and when you find yourself unable to take the images your trying to capture then is the time two start looking for another zoom or maybe a prime to fit your needs.:)

I'm leaning towards the 10-24 and 23 prime.

I'm a big fan of wide angle shots and enjoy shooting landscapes.

This is a leisure camera, used for travel and general purpose.

That's an almost impossible question to answer given that we don't know what you are going to use the camera for. Possibly you don't know yourself. Just use the 18-55 and see where you feel that you are lacking.

Edit,
We crossed.
I use the 10-24 plus a Samyang 8mm fisheye.
Why would you consider the 23mm if you have the 10-24mm?

Also might be an idea to see if you get on with it before coughing up for lenses.
